What is iObservation
iObservation is an interactive web-based learning system that helps monitor and
support effective teaching. It allows administrators and teachers to store evidence and foster growth of professional
practice, through the use of research-based strategies to ultimately increase student learning.

Why iObservation?
Practicing with iObservation will…
• Help you become more familiar with the observation process
• Help you construct feedback that is more authentic and relevant to teachers
• Help organize informal and formal feedback loops
• Translate observed evidences electronically to a scale score

3 Types of Observations
• Self Observation – observations conducted by users on themselves
• Peer Observation – observations conducted by users with the same role or the same level on the hierarchy
• Teacher A observation on Teacher B
• Standard Observation – observations completed by a user with a role that is different than the role of the user being observed
• Central Office or Building Administrator/Observer observation on Learner
Self and peer observations are private to the learner unless they choose to share them.
Administrators only see the frequency of self and peer observations.

Practical Application
The iObservation overview and exploration is complete.
Now let’s practice by running through scenarios
you see everyday, practical applications.
1.877.411.7114 | MarzanoCenter.com © 2014 Learning Sciences International
Scenario 1:
Video Observation
You have scheduled time this morning to do some Walk-throughs and you are able to keep to the schedule!
• Determine if your walk-through will be evaluative or not
• If you check evaluative and you want to give additional feedback only for growth…leave a comment in the comment section with no rating or start a separate form and do not check the Evaluative box.
• Save and Close, Finish, etc…

Scenario 2:
Video Observation
As you’re leaving one observation to walk back to your office, you have a few minutes so you stop
in to observe another teacher.
You begin your walkthrough but are unexpectedly
interrupted, so you save a draft of your feedback because you hope to finish the form as soon as the interruption is resolved.

You have resolved the interruption. Do you:
• continue the observation using the draft you saved?
• return to the classroom and begin a new observation form?
• delete the saved draft and return to observe the teacher another day?

Discussions Practice Activity
You have a new PD initiative beginning soon involving ‘Learning Goals and Scales’, so you would like to initiate a discussion as an introduction to upcoming PD using the Resource Library.
– Once you choose a video or article, please SHARE the resource in a NEW DISCUSSION directly from the Library with your table mates
– Remember to prompt them with open ended questions
– Table mates are then to reply by making a new post to the professional conversation

Video Observation and Conference
You have scheduled time to conduct an informalobservation today. You conduct the observation and send your feedback to the teacher. The teacher then initiates a conference to ask questions or otherwise support his/her growth on the scored Element 17 – Helping Students Examine Similarities and Differences.

Scenario 5 Steps
Choose a partner – One of you will play the role of the observer and the other will play the role of the teacher.
– Conduct an informal observation (view the video)–both of you practice completing the observation form. The Observer will click Finish, the Teacher will click Cancel
– Teacher Receives Notification (on landing page), will View Completed Observation and read the feedback provided by the Observer, and will Initiate a Conference with the observer to support his/her growth in the scored element
– Observer will continue the professional conversation by Posting a Reply in the conference

Getting Started with iObservation
1.877.411.7114 | MarzanoCenter.com © 2014 Learning Sciences International
What do we mean by look-fors and evidence?
Look-fors: In iOservation each strategy/element is known
as a look-for.
Example Evidence: There are two types under each
element or Look-for – Teacher and Student
Look-forExample Evidence

What do we mean by scales?
Scales: In iObservation, scales can be used to measure professional
growth in using teaching strategies/elements/look-fors. To see the scale for each element click on the word scale. Then choose the level
you score the teacher on to enter the score on the form.
Scale
1.877.411.7114 | MarzanoCenter.com © 2014 Learning Sciences International
What do we mean by reflection questions?
Reflection Questions: In iObservation, reflection questions provide
guiding questions at each scale level to enable observers to engage learners in reflective dialogue, to refine their instructional practice and
reinforce progress along the growth continuum.
Reflection Questions
1.877.411.7114 | MarzanoCenter.com © 2014 Learning Sciences International
What do we mean by student interviews?
In iObservation, observers can record student interviews
during observations. They are found under each Design
Question on the Learning Map. When an observer has a conversation with the student, it should be documented here.

Where do I add comments to an observation?
There are a few places you can add Comments to provide feedback to the
Learner. One place is on the element page itself right below the scale score for that element. You can copy and paste from the scale or reflection
questions to begin the conversation with the Learner, but the conversation
should not stop there.
