Natural Disaster Monthly Highlights for May: 01 May to 29 May 2018

Natural Disasters Update:

Takhar:

480 families were reportedly affected by flood on 13 May in Chal district. A joint assessment team consisting of CONCERN and ANDMA conduct assessment on 15 May and identify 277 families in need of humanitarian assistance. Mission east committed to cover NFI needs whiel ANDMA will cover food needs of the affected families.

The assessment of flood affected families in in Khwaja Bahawaddin district is concluded, the finding indicates the flood impacted agricultural land while no house was impact-ed by the flood. The assessment in Farkhar district is on-going and expected to complete by end of this week.

In the separate landslide incident in Rustaq district on 17 May, 50 families were reportedly affected. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, CONCERN, DG conduct assess-ment and identify 26 families in need of humanitarian assistance. IOM distributed family modules, blankets, solar lanterns and family tent to affected families while food needs were covered by ANDMA.

Kunduz:

As per the initial report; 250 families were affected by flood in Emam Sahib district on 17 May. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ACTED and ANDMA initiated assess-ment in the affected areas on 20 May. 83 families are found eligible and in need of humanitarian assistance. IOM will distribute NFIs and family tents, ACTED will distribute multi-purpose cash and WFP will cover food needs of the affected families.

Baghlan:

Reportedly 170 families affected and five persons were killed by flood in Khuja alwan, Nahren, Deh Salah, Pule Khumri and Jelga districts on 15 May. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA, ARCS, RRD, FOCUS and WFP initiated assessment So far; 388 families verified in need of humanitarian assistance while the assessment is on-going in Julga district that will follow coordination of assistance.

• 20 provinces affected by flood, earthquake, landslide and dry spell

• 27 natural disaster incidents recorded

• Reportedly over 8,000 families were affected

• 83 joint rapid assessments conducted by IOM, ANDMA and other partners

• So far; 6,003 families (41,220 individuals) verified in need of humanitarian assistance (NFI, ES and food items)

• So far; IOM distributed relief assistance to over 4,360 families (30,520 individuals) affected flood, earthquake, landslide drought affected/displaced families

• Of 2,180 drought displaced families in Herat, all received NFIs distributed by IOM while the distribution of hygiene kits and food items by UNICEF and WFP is on-going.

Badakhshan:

485 families were reportedly affected by earthquake in Yaftal, Argo, Teshkan, Tagab, Baharak, Arghanjkha, Shudada and Jurm districts on 9 May. A joint assessment team con-sisting of IOM, ANDMA, WFP, Afghan Aid, ARCs, FOCUS and district authorities initiated assessment on 10 May. 44 families were verified in Yaftal district while 142 families were identify by ARCS in in Arghanj Khaw, Teshkan, Baharak, Kishim, Jurm and Shahada districts. IOM distributed NFIs to 44 families in Yaftal district and nine families in Ba-harak districts while ARCS and UNICEF covered NFI needs and ANDMA distributed food items to 134 families in Arghanj Khaw, Teshkan, Jurm and Shahada districts. 44 addi-tional families were identified in Baharak and Tagab districts in need of humanitarian assistance. IOM will distribute NFIs and ANDMA will cover food needs of the affected families.

- In the separate incident reported by ANDMA, 210 families were reportedly affected by flood in Baharak, Yaftal Bala, Argo and Yaftal payan districts. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM and ANDMA initiated assessment. So far; 18 families were identified in Argo district, 16 families in Raghistan district, 24 families in Yawan district while the assessment of affected families in Yaftal Bala district is pending due to road closer. Afghan Aid distributed NFIs to 18 families of Argo district while ANDMA covered food needs. CONCERN will distribute NFIs and ANDMA will cover food needs of the affected families in Raghistan and Yawan districts.

- In the addition, as reported by ANDMA, an unknown number of families were affected by flood in Faizabad on 20 May 2018. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA and WFP initiated assessment 21 May, 68 families were verified in need of humanitarian assistance. IOM distributed family modules and blankets modules while food needs of the affected families were covered by ANDMA.

- In a separate incident on 26 May, 200 families were reportedly affected by flood in Faizabad city. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA and WFP initiated as-sessment on 27 May 2018. So far 38 families were identified in need of humanitarian assistance while the assessment is on-going.

Samangan:

30 families were reportedly affected by flood in Hazrat Sultan, Khuram Sarbagh and Aibak districts on 17 May 2018. A joint assessment team consisting of ANDMA, Afghanaid, DRRD and ARCS conducted assessment on 24 May, 125 families were identified in need of humanitarian assistance. UNICEF will distributed NFIs while WFP will cover food needs of the affected families.

Drought IDP Update in Herat:

As per the initial report obtained from ANDMA, over 800 Families were reportedly displaced due to dry spell from various location in Ghor and Badghis provinces currently

residing in Injil district (Kehdistan Area). The initial reported figures gradually increased to over 3,000 families as IDP families continue to settle in this location. A joint assess-

ment team consisting of IOM, WFP, IRC, ANDMA and DRC initiated assessment on 30 April. The assessment concluded on 08 May; 400 families were verified to be displaced

from Ghor and 1,780 families from Badghis who were in need of NFIs, food and emergency shelter. IOM committed to cover NFI needs (2,180 Blanket, winter clothing, Solar,

family modules, 1,280 family tents) of all 2,180 families, WFP to cover food needs, DRC from ESNFI stock committed to distribute 225 tents and IFRC 675 tents, hygiene and

water tankering needs to be covered by UNICEF and wash cluster, health needs were referred to DoPH and health cluster. So far all 2,180 families received NFI from IOM

while the distribution of food items and hygiene kits are on-going by WFP and UNICEF.

Ghor:

Reportedly 62 families were affected by flood in Tolak , Charsada and Feroz Koh districts on 15 May. A joint assessment team consisting of WFP, DORR and ANDMA conduct assessment and identified 26 families in need of humanitarian assistance. UNICEF distributed NFIs and ANDMA covered food needs of the affected families.

Badghis:

On 12 May, around 2,600 families were reportedly affected by flood in Moqur district. A Joint assessment team consisting of WVI, WFP and UNICEF IPs and ARCS conduct as-sessment on 15 May that have verified 1,894 families in need of humanitarian assistance. The district is insecure and has access constraints, the agencies on the ground are coordinating response, there concern on the numbers of verified families as this seems exaggerating while other humanitarian agencies can not reassess due to access issues.

Bamyan:

50 families were reportedly affected by flood in Kahmard district on 19 May. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA, DAIL, RRD and PG initiated assessment on 20 May; 49 families were verified in need of humanitarian assistance. IOM will distribute NFIs and ANDMA will cover food needs of the affected families.

- In a separate incident on 26 May, 110 families were reportedly affected by flood in Sayghan and Yakawlang districts. A joint assessment team consisting of IOM, ANDMA and ARCs initiated assessment on 28 May, the assessment is on-going and expected to conclude by this week.

Nooristan:

A joint assessment team consisting IMC, WFP and ANDMA initiated assessment of the flood affected families in Wama district on 15 May. The outcomes of the assessment will be known by this week however the number of reported families is small.

Conflict IDPs Update:

Kunar:

110 families reportedly displaced from Nurgal district to Nangarhar, Khiwa and Behsud districts. A joint assessment team consisting of PU-AMI, WFP, APA, DoRR initiated as-

sessment, 42 families identified in need of humanitarian assistance. PU-AMI will distribute cash.

Nangarhar:

As per the initial report by ARCs, around 273 families have been displaced within Bati Kot district and 350 families displaced in Deh Bala district. ARCS conducted assessment

and identify 56 families in Bati Kot and 145 families in Deh Bala districts. ARCs is currently out of stock, the case is referred to ICRC for their possible intervention.

In a separate incident; 32 families were displaced from various villages of Bati Kot district to Behsood and in Jalalabad city due to ANSF cleaning operation. Nangarhar DoRR

fears of 300 to 500 families displacement however this has not happened. The assessment of these families have been initiated by NRC, DoRR and CWS; so far 7 families iden-

tified eligible for assistance while the assessment is on-going for the remaining.

Laghman:

210 families were reportedly displaced by conflict from multiple location in Laghman. The families are currently residing in Mehtarlam. Following the screening of the petition

by DoRR and OCHA. A joint assessment team consisting of NRC, APA, WFP, DoRR and DRC conducted assessment and found 13 families in need of humanitarian assistance,

NRC distributed 28,000 AFN cash for food and NFI to each family.

Kunduz:

Reportedly 1,000 families were displaced by conflict from Khan Abad and Qala Zal districts currently residing in Kunduz city. So far; 900 families were assessed by DoRR, ACT-

ED,WFP, DACAAR, ADA and WAW. 563 families have been verified of which 463 families received assistance while the assessment is no-going.
