IDP CRISIS IN IRAQ IOM EMERGENCY RESPONSE ACTIVITY REPORT IOM Activity Report, 09 July-16 July 2014 IOM continues to collect accurate displacement data on the ongoing displacement crisis through the implementation of the DTM and DTM+ by Rapid Assessment and Response Teams (RART). Forty-two IOM RART personnel in the 8 governorates most affected by violence and displacement, of a total RART team of 68 field staff, have been actively collecting data from Key Informants (KIs) for the DTM+ since the beginning of June. As of 16th July, DTM field teams have identified 555 precise locations containing 60,958 IDP families in Iraq since the beginning of June, as a result of the crisis in the city of Mosul that very quickly spread to surrounding districts and several other governorates in northern and central Iraq. It is also known that an estimated 7,091 families have left their locations of displacement in Ninewa and are currently on the move. Some intend to return to their area of origin, while others are in transit to central and southern governorates, or to locations in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). This brings the total number of identified IDP families to 68,049 (408,294 individuals) in June and July 2014. DTM+ assessments are ongoing and field teams will continue to update displacement figures and trends. For a more detailed account of this week’s DTM assessments, please refer to the accompanying DTM report: www.iomiraq.net/dtm-page iomiraq.net | [email protected] 1 ASSESSMENTS: DISPLACEMENT TRACKING MATRIX RAPID ASSESSMENTS AND REPORTS FROM THE FIELD On 12 July, IOM RART personnel carried out a rapid assessment of Bahrka transit site, confirming the presence of more than 5,000 IDPs, many having arrived 3 days before and most waiting to be transferred to the airport for onward movement to central Iraq, particularly to the govenorates of Najaf, Kerbala, Babylon, Qadissiya, and Wassit. As the distribution process had not been well coordinated, some families had received nothing despite other having received food and non-food items. On 15 July, an IOM representative and other UNCT members attended a meeting with the Head of the Erbil Refugee Council, during which it was confirmed that approximately 750 families had flown from Erbil airport on the previous day (14th) and that a further 800 would fly to Baghdad on the 15th. As a result of this, approximately 2,000 individuals now remain within the camp, and discussions are underway as to how best to support this population and respond to increases in numbers. IOM continues to monitor the situation. Between the 9th and 16th of July, IOM distributed 3,191 individual kits, including 2,411 IOM NFI kits, 200 WFP food parcels, 200 UNICEF Hygiene kits and 380 UNFPA Dignity kits, to a total of 2,411 distinct IDP families. These distributions were implemented in coordination with local authorities and the HCT. Funding is now being sought and allocated for the procurement and distribution of further emergency response kits for IDP populations located in priority areas. In the meantime, IOM continues to assess and identify the vulnerabilities of IDP families in all affected governorates. Since the beginning of June, IOM has immediately responded to the overwhelming needs of IDPs by distributing 5,901 life-saving emergency relief items in the form of kits to vulnerable IDP families (an estimated 35,406 individuals) in the governorates of Ninewa, Erbil, Sulaymaniah, Kirkuk and Diyala. In addition to this, IOM has also been facilitating the delivery of food parcels on behalf of the World Food Program (WFP), hygiene kits on behalf of UNICEF, and Women’s Dignity kits on behalf of UNFPA to vulnerable families displaced within the five governorates mentioned above. This coordinated response is contributing to four priority needs of IDP families: NFIs, Food Items (FIs), hygiene items, and items designed to assist in the securing of maternal health. In total, IOM has distributed 9,497 separate kits over a period of just 33 days.
