WCHS9- “Define Yourselves!”

Parents-please take the time to review your freshman student's first semester perfor-

mance. Encourage your student to reflect on the following questions "what did we do

well?" and "what can we do better?"

Research indicates freshman students earning less than 10 credits by the end of 9th

grade are at a greater risk of not graduating with their class. The primary focus of GI is

to #1 use that time to seek out the teacher for extra help/retest and #2 work on home-

work. Students should make teacher contact the priority as homework can be finished

after school. Remember that nothing great can be accomplished without giving a great

effort.

Students will receive a new schedule the day we return from the holiday break. Remem-

ber: Second semester classes cannot be changed. Please refer to the student handbook

scheduling policies on page 15.

Freshman students entered schedule requests for their sophomore year the week of De-

cember 9th. Students and parents have until January 6th to make on-line changes. After

that time, counselors will be reviewing their next year schedules and parents will need

to make contact through guidance to make additional changes. Remember any schedule

change requests must be made by June 1st.

Please "like" us on Facebook at WCHS-9 or follow us on Twitter @WhitelandHS_Guid

Finally, please remind your student to dress appropriately for the upcoming winter sea-

son especially those who make transitions between buildings during the day.

If you are not receiving the emailed link to our weekly WCHS-9 newsletter, contact the

office to update your information by calling 535-3855.

PSAT and PLAN

In October, all sophomores took the PSAT. On the

same day, all juniors took either the PSAT or PLAN.

We are expecting those test results in late Decem-

ber. Results are returned to the school.

For sophomores, results will be distributed to the

students during GI. Results will also be discussed

and interpreted at the Sophomore Night on January

30, 2014, at 7:00 pm in the high school auditorium.

Results of the PSAT and PLAN will be distributed to

junior students in January during class time. Coun-

selors will spend class time explaining results to

students and advising them how to review and

study for the upcoming SAT and ACT. Counselors

will also review how to register for both of these

tests.

Counselors have been working with cur-rent juniors on next year's schedule. Students should have turned in their green scheduling sheet by December 19th to either their US History teacher or the guidance office. Students and parents have access in PowerSchool until January 6th to add or delete classes. (It will be listed under Class Regis-tration.) After January 6th, changes can be made by contacting the guidance office. Starting in late January, counselors will be meeting with current juniors individually to review graduation status and senior schedule choices. SAT and ACT

Who, Why, When and Which one?

Students planning on attending a four year college are required to take a college en-

trance exam like the SAT or ACT. Both tests are accepted by Indiana colleges and

viewed as equal tests. The SAT and ACT have slightly different testing and scoring for-

mats, so sometimes a student will do much better on one test versus the other due simp-

ly to learning and testing styles. Guidance recommends that each college bound student

take the ACT and SAT one time each. After reviewing scores with their counselor, stu-

dents should retake whichever test format seems to match their abilities the best. Most

students will score higher the second time of taking either the SAT or ACT.

Students typically begin taking college entrance exams in the winter of their junior year.

For juniors, a basic timeline would be as follows:

Receive scores from October PSAT and use the score report to review and study

Take the SAT and ACT (with writing) one time each between January and April.

Review scores with counselor and decide which test to take a second time. Regis-

ter to retake this test in June, or early in the senior year.

Students register online for these exams. For the SAT, visit www.collegeboard.org. For

the ACT, visit www.actstudent.org. Students who are 21st Century Scholars or on free/

reduced lunch can ask for fee waivers. Please see your counselor for a fee waiver.

Students planning on attending Ivy Tech or Vincennes after high school are not required

to take the ACT or SAT, as both of these schools provide their own placement test called

the Accuplacer. Ivy Tech and Vincennes will accept SAT or ACT scores if available.

Extra help is promoted at WCHS. All students and parents are encouraged to ask for help if there is a need for tutoring or help outside of class.

Teachers and peers are available during study hall, GI, and before and after school. A

math teacher is available for tutoring each morning from 7:20-7:40 am. Students should ask their teachers for help during GI if they are struggling or need assistance.

Students should make appointments with teachers for help before and after school.

Don’t wait until it is too late to receive help.

The list that follows summarizes some ideas the high school is promoting to help your

child:

1. Ask teacher for help 6. Form study groups with peers

2. Ask GI teacher for help 7. Ask family for help

3. Use GI time wisely 8. Talk to your counselor

4. Find a student to help 9. Call 1-877-ASK-ROSE or go to

Financial Aid (FAFSA) Help

Filling out the FAFSA (the Free Application for Stu-

dent Aid) is one of the most important steps in help-

ing your student receive scholarships, loans, and

grants to pay for college and other career training.

The FAFSA is completed based on 2013 taxes and

must be completed between Jan. 1, 2014 and March

10th, 2014. WCHS offers many different support

programs with knowledgeable staff to help with FAF-

SA completion.

1. FAFSA Night - January 16th at 7:00 pm in

the LGI in the high school building. This is an

informational program presented by a guest

speaker from ISM College Planning.

2. FAFSA Help Day- February 11th from 10:00

am until 7:00 pm in computer lab D100 in the

high school building. This is staffed by the Na-

tional Center for College Costs. Students and

parents can bring in FAFSA materials and re-

ceive individual help in completing the form

online, ensuring it is completed correctly and on

time, and interpreting the results.

3. FAFSA Help Night- March 4th from 5:00 pm

until 8:00 pm in computer lab D100 in the high

school main building. This is staffed by ISM

College Planning. Students and parents can

bring in FAFSA materials and receive individual

help in completing the form online, ensuring it is

completed correctly and on time, and interpret-

ing the results.

ber. And the access password is your student’s password. Enter your

relationship with each student. Click “ENTER” Then, you have access to

all of your students just by entering your personal desired username

and personal password.

Financial Aid: Tips for Students & Parents 1. Ask your senior for the orange organizational folder provided by the school.

Guidance will make these available to students in January. These folders pro-

vide hints and tips for completing the FAFSA and can be reused each year.

2. Don’t assume your financial status disqualifies you from eligibility. Apply for all

types of aid.

3. Complete your tax return as early as possible. It will make it easier to complete

the FAFSA.

4. It is important to meet the Indiana deadline of March 10. If your taxes are not

done at this time, it is possible to estimate taxes on the FAFSA and then make

adjustments and edits later.

5. Read and follow the FAFSA instructions. If you don’t understand the instruc-

tions, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

6. You must file your FAFSA on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov For the 2014-2015

school year, you can begin filing after January 1, 2014. FAFSA processing

does not require a fee. Keep copies of all applications and forms submitted.

7. Always respond to requests for additional information in a timely manner.

8. Forward your financial aid notification, acceptance or rejection in the time frame

indicated.

9. Contact a college financial aid administrator when you have specific questions.

10. Write down the name of each person you talk to when asking for advice.

11. Comply with all deadlines that may affect eligibility.

Central 9 Career Center

In November, freshmen had a special opportunity to observe students in

action in programs at Central 9 Career Center. Almost twenty different career pro-

grams are available.

Students who attend the Career Center will be at Central 9 for half of the

day and at WCHS for the rest of each day. Several skill areas lead to apprenticeship

programs following graduation. Others result in dual college credit at Vincennes

University or Ivy Tech State Community College. In Aviation Maintenance Technolo-

gy, which is open to seniors only, students are actually enrolled at Vincennes Univer-

sity while they are still in high school.

Freshmen, sophomores, or first-time juniors must complete an application

in order to attend Central 9. These applications will be available in the guidance

office in early December. It is important that students return these forms to the

Guidance Office with parent signatures as soon as possible. Each program has

a limited number of openings; therefore it is very important to apply on time. Students

who delay their requests until later in the school year have less opportunity of obtain-

ing a spot in their first choice program.

Looking ahead…

Cross Country Highlights 2013

The boys cross country team missed by 6 points from advancing to the

Regionals. WCHS had 3 boys who advanced to the individual regional

competition. They were: Gabe O’Keefe, Landry Long, and Noah

Sheaffer.

The girls cross country team finished their season at the sectional

placing 8th out of 10 teams. Three individuals went on to the regionals. They were:

Marlee Smiley, Danielle Muse, and Kaley Brewer

On Saturday, October 26, Danielle Muse became the first girl in Whiteland's history to qualify for the state finals in cross country! On a challenging course and under

very windy conditions Dani still managed to run a lifetime best by 9 seconds to finish

17th place. Her time of 19:05 is a also new school record!

Danielle will compete in the state finals next Saturday in Terre Haute at 1:45 pm. If

you see her please congratulate her on this monumental achievement!

In other exciting news from cross country Bethany Davis (WCHS ’11) broke her college school record at Evangel by running 18:41.

Here is a list of all the former Whiteland Warriors currently running cross country in college and making us proud. Some of them will be running track as well.

Tennis News 2013—

Jacob Scott and Sam Venter became Sectional Champs of the individual doubles

boys tennis teams going on to play at Regionals. Jacob Scott and Sam Venter

were also named All-State Doubles and Collin Scott was named All-State Singles

in district 5. To put this in perspective, there are more than 300 tennis teams divided

among 8 districts. Our district has 34 teams in it, each with at least 4 doubles play-

ers, and so out of a possible 68 doubles teams, Jacob and Sam were ranked as

one of the top 6 teams. In singles, the top 12 singles players from each district are

ranked. Out of the over 100 possible singles players in our district, Collin was

ranked in the top 12.

Operation Bundle-Up at WCHS!

CPCSC has been helping collect winter coats for

United Way of Johnson County's Operation Bundle Up for

the last 10 years. With help from everyone, over 600 items were

donated for the annual UNITED WAY coat drive.

Thank you to the students from CPI that helped sort donations be-

fore the game. Thank you to all who helped organize collections at their

schools. You are truly appreciated. *********************************************************

Also, the Peer Helper Program is 25 years old. If you were a

Peer Helper email [email protected] and tell us what you are doing

now.

This is the 3rd year Peer Helpers received a $1000 grant from

Youth Philanthropy of Johnson County for 3 separate projects: United Way

Christmas Angels program to sponsor a family and buy teen gifts for Christ-

mas Shoppe; Supplies for Christina House to make crafts for the residents

and Warrior Wardrobe to buy racks, and "wish list" items.

Peer Helpers have been busy each week visiting their elementary

"buddies" at WES, PCES and SWE; visiting residents at Christina House and

beginning to plan the annual ACHE program held in April. This program is to

show awareness of the dangers of making poor decisions around Spring Break,

Prom and graduation. This is a program planned with other Johnson County

high schools and is sponsored by Drug Free Johnson County Coalition.

The annual Christmas Tree Decorating contest helped raise money

for Riley Dance Marathon. The trees decorated the hall leading to the cafete-

ria and media center. Trees were decorated by Peer Helpers, NAHS, media

center, FEA, Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams and Riley Dance Marathon.

Several WCHS World Language Club members, accompanied

by sponsors Mrs. Jan Bradley, Mrs. Christina Gonzalez, Mrs.

Nicole Leach, and Mrs. Lina Lopez- Pérez, attended the Indian-

apolis International Festival, on Saturday, November 23 at the

Indiana State Fairgrounds. One parent chaperone, Mrs. Tanesa

Genier, also attended.

The members were able to experience cuisine, music, and

dance represented by several countries around the world. Em-

phasis at the festival was placed on Asia. Students were able to

learn about customs from many countries. Many native speak-

ers were available for conversation and for answering students’

questions. Students were able to purchase crafts and clothing

and shop early for the holidays. Some foods there that students

and chaperones tried were gyros, pierogis, bratwurst and sauer-

kraut, and baklava. Some students chose to eat American food

or purchased German/Swiss chocolates.

“It was fun going to see all the different cultures and seeing the

acts performed by people on the main stage. It was well worth

going on a Saturday,” commented Drake Dussault.

Sarbjot Singh, remarked, “It was a great way to learn about

different cultures and try new food.”

The officers of the club are Christian Stone, Karmveer Kaur,

Kendall Genier, Emily Muse, and Teresia Valle.

The club also met during Clubs I on Thursday, December 5th

during Guided Instruction during the school day. They listened

to songs in different languages and enjoyed a few refresh-

ments. A few foreign exchange students attended the party,

Ludovica DeBettin , Italy, Anna Bergenbrink, Sweden; and

Nuttamon Thongyot, Thailand.

To ALL parents of WCHS students:

Please hold your student(s) accountable for any over-

due library materials.

We DO NOT charge library fees. Therefore, I am

asking for your help. We have students who have overdue

materials and other students would like to read them. Help

us by holding your student accountable for library materials

that are overdue. Also, if you happen to locate a book that

has our barcode on it that has WCHS Library over the top,

please send it back to the school, no questions asked.

If the student has lost the item, the library will

accept a replacement (exact book, same author) since we

DO NOT receive the funds back into the library accounts to

re-purchase. If you have any questions or concerns, feel
