President’s Perspective Blessings. Some times we don’t realize how blessed we truly are as dairy farmers. It’s easy to focus on the negative aspects of farm-ing; the loss of a favorite cow, the power out-age that delays milking, down hay or frozen waterers! Not to mention the challenges of getting your top cow to flush good eggs and figuring out how you are going to squeeze in two family gatherings and mix feed during the holidays. The members of the Iowa Holstein Association have numer-ous blessings to be thankful for as we close 2014. For one, this is the year we had been gearing up for several years. We went into the 2014 National Convention as friends and came out as what I would say as a “family.” Convention planning is stressful and the entire group of breeders involved came together. Our Convention is what other states are saying was one of the best ever! Second, milk prices in 2014 were above average, as were cull cows. All producers have reasons to be happy about this, especially the young producers starting out in the business. Whether you are working hard to pay off your new robot, the farm down the road or even your son or daughter’s college education; every extra dollar helps. Your family - no matter if they are your children at home or out of the house, your brother down the road or your hard-work-ing wife - are blessings to you and your dairy farm. They are are excited to feed their first baby calf, call you to see if they can bring you dinner in the field on their way to visit you or with you every day on your fifth generation farm. Without their enthusiasm and support, you would not be in dairy farming. Everyone have a wonderful Christmas and count your many blessings. I hope to see many of you in Independence for the Iowa Holstein Convention in February. It should be a new and fun expe-rience that includes a tour of the Heartland Acres Agribition Cen-ter, Edgewood Locker catering the banquet and a dance. Blessings, Matt Hamlett

Dear Iowa Junior Holstein Association,Thank you for the generous monetary gift to help cover my ex-penses at the National Junior Holstein Convention. I had a great time meeting new people and competing on the Senior Dairy Bowl team. Thank you for all your support!Sincerely,Bethany Simon

Dear Iowa Junior Holstein Association,Thank you for the monetary gift of cash for the National Junior Holstein Convention. I had a great time represent-ing Iowa on the Junior Dairy Bowl team. I look forward to attending next year’s convention in St. Charles, Illinois. Thanks again,Adam Simon

“What is one fun fact about you?” This question is extremely common in high school and college settings as people get to know each other. As a second year student at Wartburg College, I took on a role as an orientation staff member as the new class of Wartburg students started their college journey in August. You are probably wondering why I am bringing this up, but I promise there is a point. As I asked this question to hundreds of new college students, the range of answers intrigued me. Some people replied with things like “I can touch my tongue to my nose,” “I have visited eight different countries,” or “I have six siblings.” All of these answers are interesting and can teach us a lot about others and ourselves while sparking conversation. I pondered my own fun fact as usual, and was sure that I had not done anything interesting enough to share with others. How-ever, the fact that I finally decided upon and will likely use for all future scenarios similar to this is something to the extent of “I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Iowa where we milk around 280 Hol-stein cattle!” This fact does not seem all that interesting to those of us in the same boat, however, I usually get a lot of surprised and interested reactions when I share this fact with others. This is truly an aspect of myself that is unique to me and has defined who I am as an individual. This is a fact that I can share with pride. I always keep my crown and sash in my car so I have it with me in case I need it for a last minute event. During the week of Wartburg’s freshman and transfer student orientation, I gave rides to several other staff members. Upon seeing my crown and sash, I had the opportunity to explain what it represented and tell them all about the wonderful Holstein breed and dairy industry. They, of course, found a roll of the “I met a dairy farmer” stickers in my box and begged for one. The majority of our orientation staff ended up wearing these stickers throughout orientation which brought about more conversations regarding the topic that I love, “the dairy industry.” I wanted to share my experience with you all because it shows how much others appreciate and care about what you do as mem-bers and hard workers within the industry. I would love for you to all keep this in mind and next time someone asks you for a fun fact about yourself I hope you can all reply as proudly and confidently as I am able to. I would like to wish you all a wonderful and plentiful harvest and give a special shout out to all of you who did an amazing job at the World Dairy Expo!God bless,Molly Schmitt

2015 IHA Auxiliary Silent AuctionAt last year's auxiliary meeting, we decided to have an-other Silent Auction at the 2015 Iowa Holstein Convention in Independence. In order to make this auction a success, we need to have as many items donated as possible. Start searching around so we can have a variety of items to sell.

FYI Recently you should have received information to complete your Association membership for 2015. The deadline is once again February 1. Remember there is a cap on the cow fee at $200. The Iowa Holstein Herald is sent to all adult members as a part of their membership fee. Membership in the Iowa Holstein Auxiliary is only $5.00. The Auxiliary awards scholarships to our youth, presents the Hall of Fame Award each year, sponsors and manages the Holstein Prin-cess Contest, offers assistance by decorating the sale ring for state sales and supports Association activities throughout the year. We would encourage your membership. Junior membership fees are now $5.00, which does not include a subscription to the Iowa Hol-stein Herald. Juniors may subscribe for their own copy for $10.00 per year. Please return the pre-labeled card, making any changes direct-ly on the card. Please share your email address if you have one. It is certainly an economical way to communicate and we are using it more each year. A pre-addressed envelope has been included in the membership envelope. Please use it to return your completed membership card and check to Iowa Holstein Association, 20252 130th Street, Sumner, IA 50674. Also included in your membership mailing is information re-garding the Iowa State Dairy Association. For every membership sold through the Iowa Holstein Association, the IHA receives a $5.00 rebate. Please consider this offer and its benefits. Also in-cluded in the membership mailing is a subscription offer for the Holstein World. For each renewal or new subscription we get a $1.00 rebate back. Separate checks please. District Meetings - A schedule of these meetings is printed on page 4, please make an effort to attend. Your input is needed. The fellowship is great and food is always available. The district direc-tors will be responsible for presenting the state association infor-mation at their own district meetings. We will be providing them with any necessary information.

Iowa Holstein Auxiliary Scholarships The deadline for the auxiliary’s scholarship applications is February 1. An application is available at www.iowaholsteins.org. Up to three scholarships will be awarded. This scholarship is available only to non-dairy science majors and can only be received one time. Applicants must be an Iowa Junior Holstein Association member, high school graduate and attending col-lege at the time of application.

Iowa State University Dairy Science Student Profile Name: Abby Weighner Hometown: Waukon, IA High school: Waukon High School class size: 120 farm Name: Weighner Bros. Major: Dairy Science

why did you decide to attend isu? I attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA my freshman year as an art major. I quickly decided that wasn’t for me and knew I wanted to go into agriculture. Coming from a dairy farm, dairy science was my first choice. My older sister majored in dairy science at Iowa State and always talked about how much she loved the program.what has been your most memorable college experience? My first Midwest ADSA trip with the Dairy Science Club is probably my most memorable college experience. When you spend a whole weekend with the entire club you get to know everyone so much better, I made a couple of really good friends on that trip. Combine that with being around a whole bunch of new people with the same interest and passion as yourself and it makes for an awesome experi-ence.what has been your favorite course? My favorite course here at Iowa State was probably American Indian Studies...even though it has nothing to do with my major. I loved the class for several rea-sons. One, it was so small everyone in the class felt more at ease get-ting into conversations and debates even though none of us knew each other. It was also pretty eye-opening because I knew next to nothing about Native Americans. Also, the instructor was great. No class was ever boring.what are your future career goals? After graduation I am planning to find a job in the dairy industry and then eventually move back into the family business either working at our dairy farm or cream-ery.

Dear Iowa Holstein Association, We would like to thank you for the money we received to help with cost from the National Convention in Dubuque. We had a great time representing Iowa and competing in Junior Quiz Bowl and Jeopardy contest. Thanks,Brylie and Brynlee Volker

Seasons Greetings! The Holidays have officially arrived with Christmas bells ringing and with that life has seem to become extreme-ly busy making it hard to believe that 2014 is coming to an end. I do hope that everyone had a safe and bountiful harvest this fall. Reflecting back on 2014 it truly has been a year to remember. A large highlight was the National Holstein Convention this past sum-mer which was a huge success when hearing positive remarks and compliments from all of those around the nation, special thanks to all who pitched in to make it such a grand accomplishment. Congratulations to all who have shown their cattle this fall and on all of your accomplishments, whether it was at State Fair, State Show, Cattle Congress, Youth Classic, World Dairy Expo, or at the NAILE. Be proud representing Iowa as you travel. Con-gratulations to Pam Bolin as the World Dairy Expo has honored her as Dairy Woman of the Year for her outstanding leadership, youth mentoring and tireless promotion of the dairy industry. Pam owns and operates Beaver Creek Farm with her husband, Dave, in Clarksville, IA. I personally have been having a great year as I started my ad-venture at Iowa State University double majoring in Marketing and Advertising, being recently elected as the Public Relations chair of the Iowa State Dairy Science Club I know my advocating and working with others in the dairy industry will only flourish! Go Cyclones!! As the year comes to a close we must remember the reason for the season and count our blessings for all that we have this holiday season. It is always important to set time aside and to think about all that you have to be thankful for this past year, for example: milk prices have rose! During this holiday season do an act of kindness for someone else to brighten their day. If anyone has anything that they would need my assistance for in the next upcoming months, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or by phone 563-542-5072. I hope everyone has a safe and warm Merry Christmas with a Happy New Year!Happy Holidays,Rachel M. Demmer
