Hi from Independence First, thanks to Pat and Larry Dellamuth and Lavonne Sandersfeld for a great rally in Kalona! There was so much to see, do, and eat, and my wallet came home considerably thinner, too.

The PUPs met for lunch recently in Brooklyn at The Classic Deli and Ice Cream Shoppe. Lavonne was in charge, and she picked a fun restaurant that had been featured in the Our Iowa maga-zine. If you are interested in joining this "exclusive" group, the Past Unit Presidents, let the nominating committee know next year.

And finally, Paul and June Ryan along with Steve Cochran have planned a good time for us in Sep-tember. You can just watch the Mississippi River roll by or do as many of the activities as you wish. Let the Ryans know you're coming.

WE LEARNED, ATE AND PURCHASED AT KALONA Nineteen Airstreams, including one from Minnesota and one from Missouri, gathered in the heat and humidity at the Kalona City Park in SE Iowa on the weekend of August 11th to 14th for the Iowa Unit August Rally. Iowa Unit members Jeff and Wanda Paine (with daughter, Amanda) drove down from Gaylor, MN, while Bob and Pat Wagoner of the Greater St. Louis Unit stopped in on their way to the Tall Ships Rally in Duluth, MN.

Instead of a “normal” breakfast on Friday morning, the day started off with juice at the host’s trailer before caravanning to the Miller Amish farm where the group got to sample (and pur-

chase) various varieties and flavors of homemade jams. Then, it was on to the Golden Delightful Bakery (also Amish owned and operated) where everyone had their choice of wonderful, fresh-baked pastries to go with their cup of coffee. Following that stop, the tour schedule had the group visiting an Amish buggy shop where new buggies were made and old buggies were repaired. The owner told the group that it takes about 100 hours to build a buggy and they sell for $6,000 to $9,000 each. The next stop was at a “scratch-and-dent” store, where damaged canned goods, along with undamaged foodstuffs, meat and fresh produce were available. The final stop on the tour was at another dry goods store and harness shop. The group was then turned loose to “do their own thing” until 5:00 PM, when they were to gather at the Kalona Coffee Shop in downtown Kalona for a sandwich and chocolate fondu and chocolate pizza party. Then, it was back to the campground for a campfire and story telling. Things had just gotten a good start when the sky opened up and everyone had to run to their Airstreams through the rain.

Saturday morning found the rally attendees enjoying breakfast

pizza, a fruit cup or orange juice and a Pampered Chef, Taste-fully Simple and Tupperware demonstration, before traveling about 8 miles east to Riverside, IA where they visited Bud’s Cus-tom Meats. This was a business that butchered and sold all the various cuts of beef and pork, as well as home-made sausage, jerky and other specialities. On the way back through Riverside, the Airstreamers stopped at the Star Trek Mu-seum Future, the birthplace (on March 22, 2228) of Capt. James T. Kirk, the fictitious spaceship captain of Star Trek fame. William Shatner, playing the TV captain, was actually born on March 22, 1931.

The morning’s travels were complete when the group drove to a farm just south of West Chester, IA, where a gentleman had obviously spent years and years collecting signs, gas pumps and other “stuff”. He had gone to the Iowa state Fair, but told rally

hostess Pat Dellamuth to “just make yourselves to home”. Nearly every building, except the house, was covered (inside and out) with signs of every description. The place was a photogra-pher’s heaven. A free afternoon was capped off with a home-made, Amish-style, family dinner at a farm residence NW of Ka-lona. The meal, consisting of lettuce salad, tapioca salad, fried

chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, seasoned noo-dles, homemade bread and jam and a generous slice of either peach or cherry pie topped off the day. Following the meal, the hostess and our guide, (both of whom were raised Amish) ex-plained the Amish style of living and answered lots and lots of

questions. Back at the campground, a campfire (without rain) was enjoyed before attendees headed for bed.

Donuts on Sunday morning, followed by a short devotional mes-sage, completed the rally and attendees hooked up and headed out, ready to gather for the September rally along the Missis-sippi River. Seven Airstreamers who were in no hurry to leave stuck around long enough to go to lunch together at the Kalona Family Restaurant. They were Scott and Kathy Allen, Tom and Shirley Herron, Scott Jensen and Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka.

A big THANK YOU goes to Tom and Shirley Herron and Wanda Paine for displaying, explaining and selling their wares on Satur-day morning and an EXTRA BIG THANK YOU goes to Pat and Larry Dellamuth and Lavonne Sandersfeld for organizing and hosting an excellent rally. Everyone had a good time and good food, even though the rally started with hot (90 degrees), humid (80%) and uncomfortable heat indexes (105 degrees). The weather could only get better, and it did! We all had a GREAT TIME.

PUPs AT DELI & ICE CREAM SHOPPE Eighteen PUPs (Past Unit Presidents) and PFL’s (Past First Ladys), along with one daughter/driver, gathered at the Classic Deli and Ice Cream Shop in Brooklyn, IA for the Annual PUPs Luncheon at noon on Saturday, August 27th. Lavonne Sandersfeld was the hostess for the gathering. Norm & Linda Beu (Norm in 2000 and Linda in 2013), Chuck & Doris Jean Cabalka (Chuck in 1974 & 2011 and Doris Jean in 2009), Larry & Pat Dellamuth (Pat in 2012), Chuck & Nancy Helle (Nancy in 2006 & 2010), Paul & June Ryan (Paul in 2008 & 2015 and June in 2002), Lavonne Sandersfeld (in 2014), Ben & Marcia Woolley (Marcia in 2007 and 2016), Lee Jones (in 1987), Sandy Teggatz (PFL in 1991), Lorraine Axtell (PFL in 1992), and Wendell & Joanne Beckley (Wendell in 1995), along with Lorraine’s daughter, en-joyed a sand-wich lunch-eon, with many also enjoying a

piece of home-made pie. Notes from Dale and Joan Lafrentz (Dale in 2004) and Jack Schintler ( ILIAMO President in 1986) were passed around for everyone to read. Catching up on what has happened during the past year occupied everyone’s time (except when eating) and the conversations were great. A big THANK YOU to Lavonne for making the arrangements. All one needs to do to join this interesting group is to just say YES when asked to serve as president of the Iowa Unit. Give it some thought. The unit needs you!

NO CHESTNUTS, JUST CORN, ROASTING IN THE OPEN FIRE Four Iowa Unit couples joined about 100-125 other friends and family members at Ed and Eileen Pauley’s rural residence near Jesup, IA on the afternoon of Saturday, July 30th for their Annual Sweet Corn Roast. Al-though the weather had been cloudy and threatening earlier in the day, the clouds broke and sunshine was the rule for the 4:30 PM gathering. Sweet corn (roasted in the husk over a wood fire), pork burgers, baked beans and lemonade were provided by Ed and Eileen, with attendees bringing a vast multitude of salads, fruits and desserts. The undertaking by Ed and Eileen would have been task enough had they had a lot of time to prepare for it, but they had just arrived home five days earlier (on Monday) from spending about four months on a trip to Alaska with their Airstream. Talk about pressure!!

The Iowa Unit couples in attendance were Gene and Carolyn Haller, Ben and Marcia Woolley, Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka and Scott and Kathy Allen with their rambunctious “daughter” Byam. Scott finally gave up on holding Byam and let her run with the other two dogs at the gathering. She had a ball and we had a good laugh watching her run circles around the other dogs. Ed even took us into his huge shop where we viewed his

five Airstreams. Yes, five trailers! He has nearly com-pleted the interior redo on his 23-footer, building a unique swivel table and relocating the couch, thereby providing room for their St. Bernard, “Jackson” to be able to turn around when inside the unit. Ed still has some work to finish, but it certainly looks different than when it came out of the factory.

A big THANK YOU goes to Ed and Eileen for hosting the event. The four Iowa Unit couples who attended had a great time, with plenty of visiting and lots and lots of food. Those who did not attend need to mark this down for 2017. You won’t be sorry you do.

Iowa Unit members: Doris Jean, Marcia, Ben, Gene, Carolyn, Kathy & Scott with Byam. Jackson occupies the middle.

Autumn will soon be upon us and, with the weather cooling down somewhat, (we hope) it will be time to think about firing up the ovens again. With that in mind, this month’s recipe is for Quick Pumpkin Bread. It can be made with, or without, nuts.

3 ½ cups flour 1 tbsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon 4 eggs ½ tsp ground cloves 1 ½ cups sugar 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup stick margarine 16 oz canned pumpkin

Grease and flour two 9"x5" loaf pans. Adjust oven rack to lower-middle position and heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix flour, baking powder, soda, ginger, salt, cinnamon and cloves in a large bowl. Meanwhile, whisk eggs and sugars in a medium bowl before whisking in softened margarine until fully incorporated. Add pumpkin and mix thoroughly. Beat wet ingredients into dry ingredi-ents until smooth and divide between prepared baking pans. Bake until golden brown and a cake tester comes out clean; about 50 minutes. Let cool for a few minutes before running a knife around pans to loosen. Turn onto a wire rack to cool. Makes two 9" loaves, which cut into 12 slices each.

NOTE: If nuts are desired, chop and add 1 to 1 ½ cups of walnuts to wet ingredients before combining wet with dry. Nutrition: 1 slice. 231 cal, 36 gm carbs, 3 gm protein, 8 gm fat, 35 mg cholesterol.

MAJESTIC TALL SHIPS—A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT Pat and Larry Dellamuth and Chuck and Doris Jean Cabalka were joined by Bob and Elaine Wagner of the Greater St. Louis Unit for the two-day trip from Ladora, IA to Duluth, MN to participate in Region 7's “Tall Ships Rally”. Leaving Ladora on the morning of Monday, August 15th, following the Iowa Unit weekend rally at Kalona, the trio traveled to the Treasure Island Casino RV Park at Red Wing, MN where, after getting setup, they enjoyed a buffet dinner in the casino restaurant. After a relatively short drive on Tuesday (203 miles), the trailers arrived at Buffalo Ridge RV Park, approximately 10 miles SW of Duluth, about 3:00 PM.

Wednesday was a “free” day where early arrivals could do some sightseeing of their own in the area. Chuck and Doris Jean made a 30-mile drive to Tom’s Logging Camp along the north shore of Lake Superior. The replicated camp, complete with 10 buildings and extensive descriptions of life in a logging camp, was very interesting and informative. Back at the campground, opening ceremonies preceded a potluck supper and a program featuring Charlie Roth, a Minnesota song writer and singer.

In late morning on Thursday, shuttle buses provided transporta-tion from the campground to the dock area in Duluth, where, at 12:30 PM, the rally attendees boarded an excursion ship and

sailed out of the Du-luth har-bor onto Lake Supe-rior to greet the

tall ships as they sailed in. The number of ships was down from the number in 2013, but they still looked beautiful as they sailed by.

Lots of photo opportunities! Everyone was disappointed when it was announced that the Viking ship would not be in the group. They were not able to raise the $250,000 needed to hire a pilot for the tour of the Great Lakes. True to fashion, an after-noon shower rolled in while the group was waiting, out-side, for the shuttle buses back to the campground, but all survived.

Friday was scheduled for a day in the harbor area to visit the docked ships and the vendors that lined the area. Having been to the 2013 rally and festival, Chuck and Doris Jean

decided to skip the crowds at the festival site and, instead, vis-ited Enger City Park where they got fantas-tic views out over the city and harbor. From atop the stone tower in the park, they were able to see, and photo-graph, the huge in-flated “Mama Duck” moored along the waterfront. It weighed 11 tons and stood about 65 feet high. Reports from those who did visit the festival area indicated the crowd was huge and the lines to board any of the tall ships were blocks long. Pat and Larry opted to travel Skyline Drive to look out over Duluth before doing some shopping, while Bob and Elaine also skipped the crowds in the festival area and drove to the grand opening of a huge Farm Fleet store.

A train ride along the north shore of Lake Superior, to Two Har-bors, was the highlite on Saturday. The lake was visible on a few occasions, but the view out the train windows was mostly trees whizzing by. It rained on the latter portion of the ride to Two

Harbors, but had quit by the time we arrived at our destination. Pre-paid box lunches were waiting for us and, after eating them,

we were free to explore the town. Among the interesting places was the birthplace of the 3M Company. Five gentlemen founded the company on June 13, 1902 with the idea of using pulverized stone

from the area to make abrasives, such as sandpaper, etc. To their regret, they later discovered the rock was not suitable. However, the company went on to develop many, many other items and become the company we know today. The train-and-

shuttle ride back to the camp-ground com-pleted the day.

The final day of the rally, Sunday, found the group car cara-vanning to the Harrington Arts Center and it’s Accordion Museum. Here Helmi Harrington has assembled over 1,300 various kinds of ac-cordions. She explained the various kinds and demonstrated several of them, to the delight of the rally attendees. The base-ment of the old church was the museum and IT WAS STUFFED!! She continued her explanation as many of the group followed her up and down the several aisles. Following the accordion museum trip, it was back to the campground for a chicken dinner buffet banquet to close the rally. On Monday morning, coffee and mini-muffins were available before attendees began leaving to head to their homes or next stop. Linda Agre and her Region 7 helpers did a fantastic job in organizing and hosting the rally. Those of you who did not attend missed a GREAT rally!!

YOUR NEWSLETTER NEEDS A LITTLE HELP!! Your newsletter team is always looking for articles and pic-tures to include in the Iowa Unit newsletter. Not all of you are stay-at-homes, so let the rest of us know when you go some-where interesting. Just a short (or lengthy) article, along with a picture/pictures (if you have some) would be greatly appre-ciated and would be enjoyed by all. And don’t worry about the grammar or spelling – that can be taken care of by your newsletter team. They would GREATLY appreciate your help.

As your newsletter team has pleaded in the past, we need some of your recipes for future newsletters, if you want this item to continue. Perhaps it has run it’s course. Let your newsletter team know if you want this type of article to con-tinue, by dropping the team a note at [email protected].

My collection of vintage kitchen utensils includes one whose intended purpose was always a mystery. It looks like a cross between a metal slotted spoon and a spatula, so I use it as both. When not in use, it is prominently displayed in a decorative ceramic utensil caddy in my kitchen.

The mystery of the spoon/spatula was recently solved when I found one in its original packaging at a rummage sale.

It’s a pooper-scooper.

Just before the final exam in my college finance class, a less-than-stellar student approached me.

“Can you tell me what grade I would need to get on the exam to pass the course?” he asked.

I gave him the bad news. “The exam is worth 100 points. You would need 113 points to earn a D.”

“OK,” he said. “And how many points would I need to get a C?”
