During use and over the course o their service lie, technical equipment such as a hand-held measuring device is exposed to numerous environmental infuences. These invariablyhave a sustained impact on the unction, useul lie, quality and reliability o the product, oil and emulsion can get into the equipment and render it unt or usage or cause materialssuch as rubber to become brittle. This is why it is so enormously important, not only rom atechnical and economic perspective but also in view o work saety, to ensure that technical

products are designed and manuactured to withstand the anticipated loads and to perormreliably.

Providing a comparable denition or users in respect o the stress and resistance levels o aproduct with regard to specic infuences is equally important. The allocation to so-called IPprotection classes can provide valuable orientation assistance.

This brochure is dedicated to providing a more detailed explanation o the term IP and itsspecic reerences and signicance in production, quality testing, and the use o hand-heldmeasuring devices.

The specialists at Mitutoyo are willing to provide personal assistance i you have any otherquestions or required detailed explanations in respect o a specic application. Two digits that provide a host o inormationThe term protection class generally indicates the type o protection o a device or theinternal workings o a device against direct contact and against the inltration o oreignbodies, such as objects, dust or water.

The resistance to stress arising rom prevailing working conditions is dened using interna-tional protection (IP) classes. These protection classes are, in turn, indicated in IP standards(DIN EN 60529), whereby a combination o two digits species the level o protection.

The rst digit indicates the level o resistance to oreign bodies and dust, the second digit thelevel o resistance to water inltration. A higher value o the relevant digit (rst digit 0 6,second digit 0 - 8) indicates a higher level o protection.

The table on the ollowing pages oers clarity and an overview o the IP

    Contact and oreign matter protection

Two devices are used to test contact and oreign matter protection, depending on the levelo requirements: a probe is used or protection grades 1 through 3 and a dust chamber ordigits 5 and 6.

    Probe testing

Probe testing involves pressing a probe a rigid ball with a diameter o between 12.5 and50 millimeters, or a rigid rod with de-burred edges and a diameter o 2.5 or 1 millimeter(depending on the protection grade) against each opening in the device housing. The ulldiameter may not be able to penetrate the inside o the device through any o theseopenings.

Dust chamber testingDustproo testing in the chamber is muchmore sophisticated than probe testing. A dustcirculating pump keeps talcum powder sus-pended in a hermetically sealed chamber. Thepowder must be ne enough to easily passthrough a sieve with a pre-dened mesh sizethat is installed in the chamber. The quantity

o powder in the chamber is also specied.A vacuum pump ensures that the inside o thetest specimen housing remains beneath theambient atmospheric pressure. The specica-tions o the relevant IP protection class 5 or 6 are ullled when no unctional impairmentand/or no dust inltration is witnessed.

    How is testing performed?

    9

    Water protection

As is also the case with contact and oreign matter, the methods or testing or waterprotection become more sophisticated as the protection grade increases. The tests or grades0 through 4 o the second IP digit are still airly moderate, involving water drips, sprays orsplashes, whereas testing or grades 5 and 6 is much more severe. A undamental distinctionis made between jet water and immersion testing.

    Jet testing

This test procedure or the second IP grades 5 and 6 involves directing a jet o water roma high pressure nozzle rom all possible directions at the test device. The diameter o the

nozzle is specied, as are the duration and quantity o water to be used. The minimum testduration, or example, is three minutes, while the fow rate is 12.5 or 100 liters per minute.

    Immersion testing

Immersion testing or the second IP grade 7 requires that the test specimen be completelyimmersed in a bowl o water or a period o 30 minutes. The device must be positionedas it would normally be during requent, real use conditions. The immersion depth is alsospecied, o course. For example, the lowest point o the Mitutoyo caliper IP67 must be a ullmeter below water level.

    External testing or heightened credibility

As a pioneer in the eld o developing and manuacturing hand-held measuring deviceswith extremely high IP protection, Mitutoyo has many measuring devices with high-grade IPprotection externally tested by TV Rheinland.

The high stress levels and IP protection classes o Mitutoyo hand-held measuring devices

are conrmed by corresponding test certicates issued by TV Rheinland Group ollowinga series o in-depth tests. This is extremely helpul or users when deciding which device topurchase: They are not just dependent on the inormation provided by the manuacturer butcan also rely on the independent judgment o a neutral expert opinion.

What and how does TV certiy?

A certied product has successully passed certain tests perormed by TV Rheinland Group,

or example saety and quality tests. The TV issues a certicate conrming the results o thetests. It conrms the tested product characteristics and indicates the relevant standards towhich they were tested.

TV Rheinland Group rst tests a representative sample rom serial production in line withthe corresponding criteria. These tests are normally perormed in TVs testing laboratories.

To ensure that the certicate does not just refect a spot test, TV employees subsequentlymonitor the relevant products at regular intervals. In the case o Mitutoyo devices, thisinvolves random testing by TV once a year. This ensures that the certied products continue

    to meet the high standards.

    TV Certication for Safety

  • 7/29/2019 IP Protection Classes

    12/32

    Direct inormation or users: TUVdotCOM-ID

TUVdotCOM-ID is the key to the certicates awarded by TV Rheinland Group. This ten-digitsequence o numbers can be used to call up the tested characteristics o a product orexample a tested hand-held measuring device made by Mitutoyo on the internet at anytime. The ID is entered in an input eld on the TV homepage www.tuv.com and navigatesstraight to an overview o the test results.

The TUVdotCOM-ID is an integral part o the round TV Rheinland seal that can be ound,or example, on the pages describing the tested hand-held measuring devices in theMitutoyo catalog or on Mitutoyos homepage www.mitutoyo.de.

The relevant TUVdotCOM-ID as listed gives users quick access to all relevant inormationvia the TV internet URL, which is equally indicated on the seal. A product can be correctlyclassied within just seconds using the TUVdotCOM-ID. You are also protected againstorged test marks: I a product displays an incorrect ID, a quick look at the description on the

internet is all it takes to uncover the mistake.Neutral testing o quality and saety characteristics by the TV removes uncertainty, simplies communication and creates a basis o mutual trust.

As a globally leading manuacturer o hand-held measuring devices, Mitutoyoalso demonstrates their outstanding commitment to development in terms oIP protection. In recent years, or example they have created the widest rangeo length measuring devices that set new standards in terms o contact, oreignmatter and water protection.

    Digital outside micrometer IP65

The digital outside micrometer IP65 developedby Mitutoyo marks a huge step orward inincreasing protection classes. It was the rsto its kind in the world to oer this level oprotection. Previously, all other outside

micrometers had only complied withprotection class IP54 at the most.

Its protection rating o IP65 proves thatthe digital outside micrometer is absolutelydustproo and thereore oers the highest denition o IP saety in terms o contact andoreign matter protection. The second grade o 5 certies that the hand-held measuringdevice is also protected against jet water and can withstand a jet spray o water aimed at thedevice rom any direction without suering any damage. Remarkably, the device complieswith IP65 specications without restriction even when a signal line is connected.

    Special Designs

Special design outside micrometers and sliding calipers

Users want to be able to benet rom high-grade IP protected measuring devices even whenusing special designs. These measuring devices with special measuring suraces or shapes are crucial or measuringinaccessible points, or example. When machines are located in dirty environments and a lot o coolant is used, outsidemicrometers with IP65 protection or calipers with IP67 protection are denitely worth having.

    Three-point internal measuring devices

Thanks to their 3 measuring jaws, which are osetby 120 and ensure sel centering bores, three-pointinternal measuring devices are ideally suited orworkshop use.I the work piece is xed in the machine, coolinglubricant is probably also present. IP65 oers protec-tion or the electronics o the internal measuringdevice so that these tasks can be perormed.

    Digital micrometer heads

Micrometer heads are installed in the widest range o applications or use as contact, positioning or measuring units. This equipment needs to work aultlessly and also be resistant to ambient inluences.IP65 micrometer heads are dustproo and protected against water jets and thus oer theproperties needed or these tasks.

    Tests or 100 percent assurance

As is also the case with the IP65 outsidemicrometer, the IP calipers are subjected toreliability tests on the production line. A testvessel and reerence vessel are used to en-sure that devices with aulty seals are identi-ed immediately when the pressure dropsin the test vessel. This simulation ensuresprovision o the IP protection. Unlike normalrandom tests, every single caliper, withoutexception, is subjected to quality testing.

    When the going gets tough:

Digital hand-held measuring devices, such as calipers, outside micrometers or three-pointinternal measuring devices, are requently ound in rough surroundings. When perormingtheir unctions in rough workshop surroundings or the direct production environment, usersmust be very sure o the level o stress they can really expose the devices to.

Anyone working in extremely cough ambient conditions who needs a really stress-resistant,top quality hand-held measuring device should denitely make sure it has the right IP protec-tion class - preerably conrmed by the TUVdotCOM seal - and take additional structuralmeasures to prevent chemical and oil impacts.

Mitutoyo uses materials that are extremely resistant to emulsion, oil, grease and coolantwhen manuacturing its Coolant Proo measuring equipment.* Coolant Proo equipmentmay not reveal any impairment in unction and properties, even ater extreme exposure to

such substances an additional material competitive advantage in extremely severe workingconditions.

The ollowing should, however, generally be observed:

Both high IP grades and additional measures and certications should not be misunderstoodas a license to careless or even negligent treatment o the equipment. No matter how highthe quality o the hand-held measuring device is, it will eventually suer damage i nottreated with the proper care throughout its service lie.

According to DIN EN 60529, IP protection on its own only describes the behavior o an objectin the conditions dened by the standard.

How long, and how reliably a digital hand-held measuring device perorms aultlessly insevere working conditions is largely ultimately, and literally, in the hands o the users.

    Globally patented: Mitutoyos Absolute System

The Absolute System, or which Mitutoyo has applied or global patent protection, hasrevolutionized working with hand-held measuring devices.

Calipers equipped with the system can be used without always having to start back at zeropoint. Since they reset the zero reerence point themselves, they can display the absolute

value o the measured length at any point. This means: You only need to start at zeropoint once, and then the measuring device keeps track o it itsel even i it is turned oin between. Once it is restarted, you can continue measuring rom any point you choose without restarting rom zero and without any errors whatsoever. In simplied terms:Absolute devices do not count; they always know where they are at any precise moment. They do not move along a length to be measured like conventional equipment; they seeit. This means you are guaranteed to work precisely and comortably under all conditions, and to save time.

Mitutoyo has not just developed and patented its Absolute System; it has also perected it:Mitutoyo is the only supplier in the world to implement the original Absolute technology in avery wide range o dierent length measuring devices.

By increasing the IP protection classes, Mitutoyo has clearly and consciously exceededcurrent market requirements. Without any problems this gives users the assurance o beingable to cope with conditions or operating their digital hand-held measuring devices, evenunder uture conditions that are not required or not conceivable at present.

Well-known practitioners and users o Mitutoyos hand-held measuring devices agree, andwarmly welcome the dramatic leap orward especially since some o the designs withbetter protection are oered at the same price as previous designs.

OKUMA Europe GmbH: Recommendation with a clear conscience

OKUMA corporation, one o the technology leaders in the eld o CNC machining technol-ogy and one o the worlds largest manuacturers o CNC tool machines, has a very clearopinion on IP development,

    According to Hartmut Ehrentraut,

Projekt Manager Application Department at OKUMA Europe GmbH:

I must coness that I do not see ad hoc any o the working environments in which morethan 25,000 OKUMA CNC jigging machines and processing centers are operated in Europe,

o which 5,000 are located in Germany alone, which would require such a high level oprotection as currently oered by Mitutoyo. By the same token, it is, however, comortingto be able to recommend measuring equipment to our clients that even meets the possiblesaety requirements o the uture. There can be no doubt that the new IP protection classesraise the quality and reliability o the measuring devices in all areas which is the beginningand end o a daily, multiaceted production process.

Jrgen Meyer: Primarily digital calipers and digital outside micrometers with and withoutdata output. By the way, we have been using Mitutoyos hand-held measuring devices ornearly 40 years now quite simply because they are most requently requested by ouremployees.

?: What is your experience with digital calipers oering the ormerprotection classes o IP65?

Jrgen Meyer: All good. Even with IP65 we did not have any problems whatsoever in termso dust and moisture protection. The same applies, by the way, to the now old IP54 versiono the outside micrometer here again, I cannot recall any diculties whatsoever. But as Isaid: Even more saety is denitely not a bad thing. Who knows what operating conditionswe will encounter tomorrow ...

?: Are your production measuring devices exposed to aggressivesubstances?

Jrgen Meyer: In our business, dust is arelatively minor problem. Cooling lubricantsare quite a dierent matter. We primarily useoil manuactured by Blaser. And, o course,

we have any number o dierent shav-ings short and long, aluminum, steel and, above all, cast iron, which is predominantlywet processed. Nothing that is necessarilydramatic but equally not totally harmless ora hand-held measuring device. So it is goodto know that we are on the sae side.

?: What is your experience with the shock and impact resistance ooutside micrometers?

Jrgen Meyer: A+K species unequivocally that any hand-held measuring device that dropson to our concrete or stone tiled foors must be submitted or testing immediately. Thanksto the particular shock resistance o your new outside micrometer with IP65 protection, anyunctional impairments or damages will be even more rare than already currently witnessedwith Mitutoyo equipment.

?: Does the extension o the battery lie and simultaneous reduction othe number o batteries or the IP66 and IP67 caliper to just one produceany benefts?

Jrgen Meyer: Well, Mitutoyos hand-held measuring devices have already proven to datethat their power consumption is extremely economical compared with others. So basically,a peak position is being topped once again, without this probably being directly noticeableon each individual hand-held measuring device since a battery lie o up to 15,000 hoursmight possibly even exceed the time over which the equipment is used. I see this economy, however, as an incredibly important contribution toward protecting the environment giventhat several million such devices are probably going to be in use at any time around the world.

?: Finally, Mr Meyer, how would you evaluate the issue o extremelyhigh IP protection classes and the point o hand-held measuring devicesdesigned to comply with them?

Jrgen Meyer: Although the resistance levels oered by the previous Mitutoyo hand-heldmeasuring devices have so ar been ully sucient or perorming the tasks our company

needs, I have to say that I do indeed welcome the added saety oered by the new devices. In our business, especially, you never know which specic job may require which unusualconditions, maybe even tomorrow. So instead o then rantically searching around or a solu-tion that may be more or less easible, the new IP classes and material standards mean thatwe are already prepared.Apart rom which, the devices dont score points merely on the basis o direct IP optimiza-tion. This is joined by other actors, such as the improved shock protection or outstandingtemperature resistance. For someone who is responsible or quality, like mysel, all o these

strengths combined together are very com-

    orting and convincing.
