IPC Curriculum Overview Milepost 1—Year 2 A Day in the Life The Big Idea: It can be fun to imagine what we want to do when we grow up. The world is full of lots of different and excing jobs. But we should remember to celebrate the things we can do now – the hobbies and interests that we enjoy, and the learning we do at school to help us achieve our goals. Within this unit the children will be focusing on a range of subjects: Society, Art, Geography, History, Music, Technology and Internaonal. Within the Society learning targets, the children will be finding out about different types of jobs that are done by the people in our school and by the people around them. Through the Art learning targets the children will be creang self portraits of themselves currently and of their future selves in 20 years me. In the Geography learning targets the children will be finding out about the services and buildings in our local area and they will be using this knowledge to create their own street maps. Through History, the children will be finding out about jobs of the past and the people that live at that me as well as what the local area was like over 100 years ago. In Music, the children will be finding out how to create a theme tune and learning how to use their voices expressively. Through the Technology learning targets the children will be finding out how to make vehicles, uniforms and how to plan a healthy snack. In their Internaonal learning the children will be gaining an understanding of how to welcome a family from another country. Addional learning opportunies: Children will be given the chance to visit Salford City FC to find out about the different types of jobs the people working there have and to explore the stadium and meet a variety of players and coaches. Parental involvement: During the entry point, parents, friends of the school community and local business people were invited to school to aend a careers workshop and share their ex- periences of the jobs they do on a daily basics. The children were given the opportunity to inter- view these people to find out more for themselves and were invited back to Salford City F.C to have a tour of the stadium and meet the players—the school were also given a signed shirt. In Technology, the children will be planning and designing a classroom make over thinking about their learning linked to different materials. In their Internaonal learning the children will be finding out about the materials that are used to build homes, why plasc waste is a global problem and what we can do about it. Parental involvement: Parents are invited to join their children in making junk model boats using the knowledge that they have gained about materials and how to choose the most appropriate materials for the task.

IPC Curriculum Overview

Milepost 1—Year 2

A Day in the Life

The Big Idea: It can be fun to imagine what we want to do when we grow up. The world is full of lots of different and exciting jobs. But we should remember to celebrate the things we can do now – the hobbies and interests that we enjoy, and the learning we do at school to help us achieve our goals.

Within this unit the children will be focusing on a range of subjects: Society, Art, Geography, History, Music, Technology and International. Within the Society learning targets, the children will be finding out about different types of jobs that are done by the people in our school and by the people around them. Through the Art learning targets the children will be creating self portraits of themselves currently and of their future selves in 20 years time. Treasure Island

The Big Idea: Since people first sailed on the oceans, there have been pirates, who have been both fascinating and feared in equal measure. Your class will find out who these people were, and how they lived and travelled.

This unit forms part of a whole school shared learning event based around the theme of islands. Children from Nursery through to Year 6 will be sharing learning through this common theme. Within this unit the children will be learning through a range of subjects: Geography, Art, Music, Technology, International and Physical Education. Through the Geography learning targets the children will be finding out about islands around the world, the islands that make up the UK and other locations, and the features you might find there, the places that were visited by pirates and the weather and climate that they experienced and how the pirates navigated around the world. In Art, the children will be learning about different coins and their designs before designing their own piece of pirate treasure. Through Music, the children will be learning about pirate songs and using this knowledge to compose and perform pieces of pirate music. In the Technology learning targets the children will be finding out about the type of foods that was eaten by the pirates, where in the world our food comes from and about heathy diets. In their International learning, the children will be looking at the rules that pirates followed and the different roles and responsibilities the pirates had on board the pirate ship as well as how to keep safe near the water. In Physical Education, the children will be participating in a variety of pirate games and creating their own pirate dances.

Additional learning opportunities: Children will be given the opportunity to participate in a whole school shared learning pirate themed day. Children will be able to come to school dressed as a pirate, experiencing different fun and engaging activities being delivered by a variety of staff across the school.

Parental involvement: Parents are invited to school to take part in a whole school shared learning event where they can explore the learning that has taken place across the shared theme of Islands.

Spring

Look and Listen

The Big Idea: Have you ever wondered how you can hear and how you can see? You can hear a dog barking and you can see it wag its tail. You can hear me talking and you can see me smiling at you. What makes hearing and seeing possible?

Within this unit the children will be learning through a variety of subjects: Science, Technology, Music and International. Through their Science learning the children will be finding out where sound and light come from, how they can make sound with their bodies and objects, how sound enters the ear, how animals can use their sense of sight and sound and how we can change sounds. In Technology the children will be designing and making their own drums and other musical instruments. In Music the children will be learning how to play a drum rhythm. Through the International learning targets the children will be finding out how languages are made up of different sounds and how bright light can affect people and animals.

Parental involvement: Parents will be invited into school to share learning and help children make musical instruments which they will use to play a piece of music.

Hooray! Let’s Go On Holiday

The Big Idea: Holidays are special days when we take a rest from school and work. Our holidays in the past were very different from holidays today. Now that we can travel to all parts of the world and even space, who knows where we will go for our holidays in the future?

Within this unit the children will be learning through a range of subjects: Geography, History, Art, Society and International. Through the Geography learning targets the children will be finding out about the places people go on holiday and how they get to that destination, some of the things people do on their holidays and how tourism can affect the area people are visiting. Through their learning in History, the children will be finding out about holidays of the past and how they differ to the holidays that people like to go on today. They will also be finding out about some of the different wonders of the world. In Art, the children will be learning how to create a sand art sculpture and how people record their holidays and about holiday souvenirs. Through the Society learning targets the children will be finding out about how they can stay safe on holiday as well as learning about pilgrimage. In their International learning, the children will finding out what is the same and what is different between their home countries and other countries around the world, how to greet each other in different languages and about future holidays in space.

Additional learning opportunities: During this unit the children will be given the amazing opportunity to visit a beach location with their peers. During this day they will be able to develop their understanding of holidays and participate in some of the things that people like to do whilst they are on holiday, for example making sand sculptures.

Summer

Live and Let Live

The Big Idea: What do living things such as animals and plants need in order to survive and grow? Do humans have the same needs? What is the difference between a living thing and something that has never been alive?

Within this unit the children will be learning through a range of subjects: Science, Technology and International. Through the Science learning targets the children will be finding out about what animals and humans need to survive, how living and non-living things are different, how animals and humans grow and change, how to attract wildlife to our environment and how to sort living things into groups. In Technology, the children will be exploring different types of bird feeders and then using this knowledge to design and make their own. Through their International learning, the children will be finding out about different animals and plants from around the world.

Additional learning opportunities: Children will participate in an exciting bug hunt around the school ground to see what interesting and fascinating creatures are living in our local area.
