¡Salud! British Volunteers in the Republican Medical Service During the Spanish Civil War, 1936?1939 Linda Palfreeman

In this response to the lack of accessible literature on what was surely one of the most important aspects of the conflict-health care and medical assistance during wartime-this book reviews the enormously valuable contribution of the volunteers who left Britain to serve with the Republican Medical Services during the Spanish Civil War. Acknowledgement is also given to the immense effort and self-sacrifice made by men and women from all walks of life who, working ceaselessly at home, made it possible for the medical teams to function in Spain. The first British Medical Unit in Spain had immense political significance for the Spanish Republic, and this work shows how, barely a month into the start of the civil war, this small group was the first visible sign of international support. This work details how volunteers not only helped to create and to maintain an emergency medical service, but how some of the individuals involved were also responsible for important developments that were of relevance to later military-medical practice and also to the history of medicine in general. Medic...

A Short History of Europe From Charlemagne to the Treaty of Lisbon Gordon Kerr

From the coronation of Charlemagne in 800 to the signing of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2007, an accessible history of the people, ideas, institutions, and events that have shaped Europe during the last 1,200 years This fascinating history for beginners provides a coherent map of the jumbled history of Europe and the European idea that has led up to this point. A continent of countless disparate peoples, races, and nations, governed by different ideas, philosophies, religions, and attitudes, Europe nonetheless has a common thread of history running through it, stitching the lands and peoples of its past and present into one fabric and held together by the continent's great institutions: the Church of Rome, the Holy Roman Empire, the European Union, individual monarchies, trade organizations, and social movements. However, people have always harbored aspirations to make this vast territory one. The Romans came close and a few centuries later, the foundations for a great European state were laid with the creation of the Holy Roman Empire. Napoleon overreached himself in attempting to cr...

All Power to the Councils! A Documentary History of the German Revolution of 1918?1919 Gabriel Kuhn Voices of dissent prior to the founding of the Weimar Republic

"Gabriel Kuhn's excellent volume illuminates a profound global revolutionary moment, in which brilliant ideas and debates lit the sky." -Marcus Rediker, author of Villains of all Nations and The Slave Ship "This remarkable collection, skillfully edited by Gabriel Kuhn, brings to life that most pivotal of revolutions, crackling with the acrid odor of street fighting, insurgent hopes, and ultimately defeat… In an era brimming with anticapitalist aspirations, these pages ring with that still unmet revolutionary promise of a better world: I was, I am, I shall be." -Sasha Lilley, author of Capital and Its Discontents and coauthor of Catastrophism The German Revolution erupted out of the ashes of World War I, triggered by mutinying sailors refusing to be sacrificed in the final carnage of the war. While the Social Democrats grabbed power, radicals across the country rallied to establish a communist society under the slogan "All Power to the Councils!" The Spartacus League launched an uprising in Berlin, council republics were proclaimed in Bremen and Bavaria, and workers' revolts shook...

Ancient Greece Mike Paine

Western civilization began with the Greeks. From the highpoint of the 5th century BC through the cultural triumphs of the Alexandrian era to their impact on the developing Roman empire, the Greeks shaped the philosophy, art, architecture, and literature of the Mediterranean world. Beginning with the Homeric period, once believed to be a realm of myth, Paine takes the reader on a journey through more than 12 centuries of Greek culture. He shows what archaeologists have revealed of the Trojan Wars and Mycenae, outlines the glories of Athens at its height, and provides a gripping narrative of the struggle between the Greeks and the mighty Persian empire. The guide also highlights the careers of great political and military leaders, such as Pericles and Alexander the Great, and explores the importance of great philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle. Dramatists and demagogues, stoics and epicureans, aristocrats and helots all take their place in the unfolding story of Greek achievement.

Animals and Humans Recurrent Symbiosis in Archaeology and Old Norse Religion Kristina Jennbert

Exploring the relationship between animals and humans in Scandinavia from the Roman Iron Age to the Viking Period, this book interprets Old Norse mythology-in which imaginary creatures with strong characters were invented-and examines the importance of animals in the human world. According to Old Norse perceptions, real and fantasy animals in Midgard became mouthpieces for human characteristics and reflections of people's social position. With the aid of animals, humans could also show who they really were as well as control higher powers. Combining results from archaeology and Old Norse texts, this account discusses the functional, symbolic, and cognitive meanings of animals and the implications of animal rights.

Auld Enemies The Scots and the English David Ross, Rupert Besley

This unique work stands as a record of the long contest of verbal warfare shared between the neighboring nations of Scotland and England. Documenting the many battles between the two countries, this book illustrates how a war of words and propaganda often accompanied the fighting, and how, even as Scotland and England eventually became allies, the verbal barbs continued, becoming sharper, more wide-ranging, and funnier.

Barbary Pirate The Life and Crimes of John Ward, the Most Infamous Privateer of His Time Greg Bak

In 1603 John Ward, a sailor in James VI & I's navy, led a mass desertion, stole a civilian vessel from Portsmouth, and defected to the Ottoman Empire at Tunis. From there, his unbridled and brutal piracy saw him become the most infamous and feared privateer of his time, revelling in ill-gotten wealth ashore and finally-in the ultimate rejection of his native land-embracing Islam. Seen as a Judas bent on undermining all Christendom, he became a prize with a price on his head and was pursued by pirate-hunters across the Mediterranean. While to his contemporaries Ward was the blackest of villains, to later generations his exploits are the stuff of legend. Greg Bak uncovers the truth and tells the compelling story of a man who rose from nothing to become a brilliant naval commander and a spectacularly successful, if amoral, entrepreneur.

Berlin Yesterday and Today Michael Imhof

Reliving the momentous events in the German capital's history, this volume contends that no other city has changed its face so rapidly in the past century as Berlin. The pre-World War I era is covered before moving onto the 1930s megalomania of Hitler and the overwhelming damage of World War II. Chronicling the city's rebirth, the study depicts its exhaustive reconstruction along with the constitution of the Berlin Wall. The city center's evolution from the 18th to the 21st centuries is also detailed, comparing historical material with current photographs. This bilingual edition includes English and German.

Bread and Ale for the Brethren The Provisioning of Norwich Cathedral Priory, 1260-1536 Philip Slavin

Despite increased commercialization and an efficient network of local markets in 1300s Europe-as well as significant costs and risks associated with the production, transportation, and storage of food-some landed lords, monasteries, and convents continued to rely on the produce of their own estates. This detailed study sets out to account for the puzzling situation, covering the period between 1260 and 1536 with an in-depth analysis of the changing patterns and fortunes of the provisioning of Norwich Cathedral Priory. As it examines the entire process of food delivery from field to table, the record explores the question of food security within the context of the various crises in the 14th century, and also illustrates the aftereffects of the Black Death. While providing unparalleled insight into Norwich Priory, the book also serves as an important resource for understanding the Late Middle Ages economy and society of England during a time of upheaval.

Catalonia Since the Spanish Civil War Reconstructing the Nation Andrew Dowling

Catalonia Since the Spanish Civil War examines the transformation of the Catalan nation in socioeconomic, political, and historical terms, and offers an innovative interpretation of the determinants of its nationalist mobilization. With Franco's and Spanish nationalism's victory in 1939, and the consolidation of a long-lasting dictatorship, it appeared certain that the Catalan national movement would be crushed. Yet, this did not happen and Catalan nationalism and identity reemerged at the end of Franco's dictatorship in 1975 more firmly rooted than before. The 21st century has been marked by an ever-growing independence movement, culminating in the vast demonstration in the city of Barcelona in July 2010. Andrew Dowling provides multifaceted viewpoints in historic perspective and reflects on possible steps and outcomes for this new pro-independence turn in Catalan nationalism. The themes treated in the book-Franco's Spain, nationalism, anarchism, Catholicism, communism, and the Catalan role in Spain's transition to democracy-make this work an essential point of reference for student...

Catholicism, War and the Foundation of Francoism The Juventud de Acción Popular in Spain, 1931?1939 Sid Lowe

Spain's first democracy was announced to popular jubilation in April 1931, a new dawn ushered in without a single shot being fired. Yet just over five years later the country was plunged into a brutal civil war that bequeathed hundreds of thousands of deaths and an authoritarian dictatorship under General Francisco Franco that lasted almost forty years. Catholicism, War and the Foundation of Francoism analyses Spain's dramatic political shift, reassessing the role of the right as it mobilised against the Second Republic, swinging from ostensibly -moderate- Catholic conservatism to fascist violence. By providing the first detailed study of the uniformed, paramilitary Juventud de Acci-n Popular (JAP), Sid Lowe challenges the historiographical orthodoxy on Spanish fascism and assumptions about the role of the hegemonic right-wing party during the Republican years, Jos- Mar-a Gil Robles's CEDA. Drawing on a wide range of previously uncovered primary material, he demonstrates that much of the parliamentary right, its leadership included, abandoned the legal road to power when it could no ...

Dangerous Days in the Roman Empire Terry Deary

The author of children's series Horrible Histories presents the first book in his new offbeat popular history series for adults-Bill Bryson meets Blackadder

With his trademark crisp, wry writing style and dark sense of humor, Terry Deary begins with the Roman Empire, in the first in a new series offering concise, informative histories that delve into myths and traditions surrounding its subjects and attempts to extract cohesion-and possibly even some truth. The Romans have long been held up as one of the first "civilized" societies, and yet in fact they were capable of immense cruelty. Not only that, but they made the killing of humans into a sport. The spoiled emperors were the perpetrators (and sometimes the victims) of some imaginative murders. This book includes some of the violent ways to visit the Elysian Fields (i.e. death), including by animal attack in the Coliseum; by being thrown from the Tarpeian Rock-the fate of 370 deserters in 214 AD alone (could also occur if the emperor didn't like your poetry); by volcanic eruption from Vesuvius; by kicking (Nero's fatal quarrel wit...

Terry Deary is the author of more than 200 books, including the Fire Thief Trilogy and the Horrible Histories series, and was voted Outstanding Children's Non-Fiction Author of the 20th century by Books for Keeps magazine.

Dead Reckoning The Dunedin Star Disaster Jeff Dawson

In November 1942, the Dunedin Star, a ship of Britain's Blue Star Line, was bound for the Middle East, her consignment of munitions for the 8th Army supplemented by 21 civilians escaping the Blitz. Three weeks into her voyage, her hull mysteriously holed, the Dunedin Star ran aground off Namibia's infamous Skeleton Coast-the most violent and desolate shore on earth. Sixty-three passengers were to defy unfathomable odds to reach land-but their struggle for survival had only just begun.

Europe and Its Muslim Minorities Aspects of Conflict, Attempts at Accord Amikam Nachmani

The presence of Muslim communities in Europe is a politically charged issue. Sporadic attacks by radical Muslims have further highlighted the problem of a deep cultural divide between the Muslims and their host countries. There is, however, no one "Islamic Nation", and a distinction must be made between the radical Muslim minority and secular or practicing Muslims who subscribe neither to the theology nor politics of the radicals. The influx of Muslim immigrants into Europe is rooted in the common human aspiration for a better life. But to date there is no European consensus about how to deal with the political, social, religious, and economic problems associated with their absorption. … This book presents a comprehensive picture of the causes and effects of Muslim immigration to the West. It discusses the population explosion in the sending countries, with their declining availability of jobs and increasing desperation. The author highlights the situation of Western countries with their shrinking families and growing workforce shortages, and considers the readiness of the Continent ...

Fire and Flames A History of the German Autonomist Movement Geronimo, George Katsiaficas, Gabriel Kuhn

Translated for the first time into English, the history of the German autonomous anticapitalist movement is traced back to the 1970s in this firsthand account. Battling police in riot gear, the early members of the autonomous movement used military tactics that included barricading and hurling Molotov cocktails in protest. Dubbed the "Black Bloc" by the German media, those tactics were soon adopted by scores of anticapitalist groups across the globe. The dawn of the autonomous faction spawned a movement in which average citizens can reclaim their lives from governmental control. Political activists and anticapitalists will find updated historical context to the movement and the current state of the German autonomous movement in this updated chronicle.

Flight of the Titan The Story of the R34 George Rosie

In the early hours of Thursday, July 10, 1919 hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers rushed out onto the streets and rooftops and gaped up into the sky as a great silver ship, hundreds of feet long, rolled slowly across the city. Restaurants, hotels, theatres and bars emptied as people took to the street to gaze upwards. The ship seemed to hover over the New York Times building in 42nd street before turning its bow to the east and heading off towards the Atlantic. New Yorkers had never seen anything like it. They were left to wonder as the thrum of the engines died away. But it was no alien visitation. The huge silver craft, bearing a lion rampant across its bow, was the Scottish-built airship R34 manned by a 30-strong crew of World War I veterans (and a stowaway cat). A few days earlier the R34 had made the first-ever east-west flight across the Atlantic against powerful head winds and electrical storms. The flight of the R34 was one of the great feats of British aviation and it has been shamefully forgotten - but there is a wealth of information out there. Some of it is in the diary ...

France Divided The French and the Civil War in Spain David Wingeate Pike

This book sets out to analyze the schism in French public opinion during the Spanish Civil War that was to end in the tragic collapse of French national unity. It examines how the French people viewed their position in the international imbroglio swirling around the Spanish question, and how news was manipulated as never before. Mainstream historical fact is presented as the skeleton on which French press reportage is grafted and included in the historical material is the author's research in the archives of all five of the French départements bordering on Spain. The work is divided into two parts, the chronological hiatus coming in December 1936. This division is explained by the policy formulated by the democracies that went through no appreciable change; a policy sufficiently strong, perhaps, to deter the Axis powers from all-out intervention in Spain, but weak enough to allow them to pursue with impunity a victory by attrition. The periodic opening and closing of the French frontier played no decisive part in the outcome, since French aid to the Spanish Republic never came close ...

Summary

David Wingeate Pike received doctorates from Toulouse and Stanford, where he taught Latin American political culture. He is Sociétaire des Gens de Lettres and distinguished professor emeritus at the American University of Paris.

Glastonbury, the Templars, and the Sovran Shroud A New Perspective on the Grail Legends

Juliet Faith

A convincing new study of the Glastonbury legends which suggests that the Shroud may have come to

England as the "Grail"

Shedding new light on the Grail stories and the arrival of Christianity to Somerset, this book illustrates important links between Glastonbury and the Celtic settlement at Old Lammana in Cornwall; and examines old tales of an object of great importance-known as "the Sovran cloth"-secretly hidden at both places. The author reveals that Henri de Blois, Abbot of Glastonbury, assisted in the transmission of the Grail stories, and that his family line were in possession of the Shroud and first exhibited it at Lirey in France in 1356. She also examines why there was such great importance placed on oral traditions in ancient times, and what importance these traditions hold for present-day historians. Finally, recent examination of the Templecombe panel reveals why it is believed the Templars may have brought the Shroud to England for safekeeping in 1307. Richly illustrated and compiled using original research, this book is sure to appeal to everyone interested in the Knig...

Gun Control in the Third Reich Disarming the Jews and "Enemies of the State"

Stephen P. Halbrook

Based on newly-discovered, secret documents from German archives, diaries and newspapers of the time, Gun Control in the Third Reich presents the definitive, yet hidden history of how the Nazi regime made use of gun control to disarm and repress its enemies and consolidate power. The countless books on the Third Reich and the Holocaust fail even to mention the laws restricting firearms ownership, which rendered political opponents and Jews defenseless. A skeptic could surmise that a better-armed populace might have made no difference, but the National Socialist regime certainly did not think so-it ruthlessly suppressed firearm ownership by disfavored groups.

Gun Control in the Third Reich spans the two decades from the birth of the Weimar Republic in 1918 through Kristallnacht in 1938. The book then presents a panorama of pertinent events during World War II regarding the effects of the disarming policies. And even though in the occupied countries the Nazis decreed the death penalty for possession of a firearm, there developed instances of heroic armed resistance by Jews, particularl...

Homer's Secret Odyssey Florence Wood, Kenneth Wood

The extraordinary story of the breaking of an Ancient Greek code

Homer is renowned as the finest of the storytellers who for countless generations passed down by word of mouth the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. Yet, for some 2,500 years, there have been persistent folk memories that his genius extended far beyond literature and that scientific knowledge was hidden in his stories of heroes, villains, gods, ghosts, monsters, and witches. Research now reveals that at a time when the Greeks did not have a written script, Homer concealed an astonishing range of learning about calendar making and cycles of the sun, moon, and planet Venus in the Odyssey, his epic of the Fall of Troy and the adventures of the warrior-king Odysseus.

Summary

Florence Wood and Kenneth Wood have coauthored four books with historical themes, including Homer's Secret Iliad: The Epic of the Night Skies Decoded.

Infrastructure and the Political Economy of Nation Building in Spain, 1720?2010 Germà Bel

This book sets out to explain the very particular characteristics of Spanish infrastructure policy. The capital city of Madrid plays a central role. It not only achieved the status of economic capital of Spain in recent decades but together with its status as administrative and political capital Madrid endowed itself as absolute capital. The challenge is to understand why such development has taken place. … First: radial policies in transport infrastructure, which were primarily subordinate to political and administrative objectives, could not be supported by the dynamics of economic activity. For that reason these policies demanded the use of extensive budgetary resources in the form of subsidies and grants that made possible what legislation alone could not achieve. Second: these policies respond to a regular and continuing historical pattern in Spanish politics, which began with the accession to the Spanish Crown of the Bourbon dynasty in the early eighteenth century. The new dynasty tried hard to translate into practice the vision of building a Nation like France, with a Capital ...

Lost Dundee Dundee's Lost Architectural Heritage

Charles McKean, Patricia Whatley

Reviving the second city of renaissance Scotland, this book shows, through previously undiscovered photographs and drawings, the life and the maritime quarter of this great port. As it illustrates Dundee's transformation into a major Georgian town at the center of the flax trade between St. Petersburg and the United States, this account examines the changes wrought by the production and sale of the jute, by the arrival of railways, and by the advent of tertiary education. Drawing particularly upon the rich visual history sources of the Charles Lawson's drawing of old Dundee in the Central Library, the DC Thomson photographic collection, and the University of Dundee Archives, this is a in-depth look into this constantly regenerating city.

National Relations Public Diplomacy, National Identity and the Swedish Institute 1945-1970

Nikolas Glover

In Stockholm in January of 1945, an assembly of Swedish diplomats and businessmen initiated an organization that was to improve the country's reputation abroad. The new, semi-governmental Swedish Institute was charged with explaining Sweden's policy of neutrality during the war, with encouraging peace-building, and with promoting foreign trade in the new international world order. Original and insightful, this account analyzes the policies, funding, and national narratives of the Swedish Institute. Providing a historical perspective on the politics of Swedish propaganda and explaining how ideas of communication shaped the Institute's work and its representations of Sweden, this record also offers a comparative perspective on American national identity and its inherent notions of national exceptionalism.

Nikolas Glover is a lecturer of history and the history of popular culture at Stockholm University and the coeditor of a Swedish anthology on historical approaches to popular music.

Nazis in Pre-War London, 1930?1939 The Fate and Role of German Party Members and British Sympathizers

James J. Barnes, Patience P. Barnes

The first book to study the history of the Nazis in Britain, this work details how in September 1930 the Nazi Party newspaper, Völkischer Beobachter, sent its first representative to London and soon after, German residents in London established a local Nazi group, which provided party members with a place to congregate and support the new movement. By 1933, more than 100 members belonged to the London group and the book goes on to discuss how the Nazis in pre-war London created a dilemma for the British foreign and home offices, who were divided as to how best to treat residents whose allegiance was to the German Reich as some felt that all Nazi organizations should be banned while others, including MI5, argued that it would be easier to keep track of Nazis if they were in-country. Calling on previously unpublished German documents, this study reveals the fate of German diplomats, journalists, and professionals, many of whom were interned in Britain or deported to Nazi Germany once war broke out in September 1939. An appendix listing the details concerning the nearly 400 German Party...

This anthology presents diverse voices of men and women who questioned and opposed the war: liberals, radicals and pacifists, anarchists and socialists, soldiers and noncombatants. Featured writers include: James Connolly, Eugene Debs, Emma Goldman, Keir Hardie, Jean Jaurès, Louis Lecoin, V. I. Lenin, John Maclean, Errico Malatesta, Sylvia Pankhurst, Siegfried Sassoon. They are American, Asian, British, French, German, Irish, Italian, and Russian. Some of the texts are newly translated or appear in English the first time.

Physical and Cultural Space in Pre-Industrial Europe Methodological Approaches to Spatiality

Marko Lamberg, Marko Hakanen, Janne Haikari

Written by 19 scholars of history, archaeology, and ethnology, this book takes a multidisciplinary approach to European spaces of the past and the human agents within them. Prior to the Industrial Era, the geography of Europe posed problems but also offered possibilities for its people. Distances created obstacles to communication and state formation, but at the same time, inhabitants and officials in peripheral areas gained room to pursue more independent action, allowing unique customs to flourish. Focusing on northern Europe, this history answers how early modern Europeans-rulers, officials, aristocrats, scholars, priests, and commoners-perceived, utilized, and organized the space around them.

Summary

Marko Lamberg is the author of Shaping Ethnic Identities. He is currently leading a project that visualizes, by means of 3D technology, changes in rural environment ca. 1400-2000. Marko Hakanen and Janne Haikari are history professors at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland.

Pirates A History

Tim Travers

Most histories of piracy start with swashbuckling adventures in the Caribbean in the 1500s and move on to the Golden Age of piracy from the 1660s to the 1720s. These areas cannot be overlooked, but in fact, piracy has a much longer and broader history to its name. This comprehensive history starts with piracy in the ancient and classical periods, and then shifts to piracy in the Middle Ages and the Mediterranean, before treating treating in fine detail the era of the Caribbean and the Golden Age. Also included are chapters on the Barbary corsairs, Chinese piracy, and a look at modern piracy.

Summary

Tim Travers has taught the history of piracy at University of Calgary for more than 20 years. His other titles include Gallipoli 1915, How the War Was Won, and The Killing Ground. He lives in Victoria, British Columbia.

Portugal (2nd Edition) The Impossible Revolution?

Phil Mailer, Maurice Brinton An in-depth leftist history of the Portuguese revolution

This is the story of the political revolution in Portugal between April 25, 1974, and November 25, 1975, as seen and felt by a deeply committed participant. After the military coup in Portugal on April 25, 1974, the overthrow of almost 50 years of fascist rule, and the end of three colonial wars, there followed a year and a half of intense, democratic social transformation that challenged every aspect of Portuguese society. What started as a military coup turned into a profound attempt at social change from the bottom up and became headlines on a daily basis in the world media. This personal history depicts the hopes, the tremendous enthusiasm, boundless energy, total commitment, released power, and revolutionary innocence of thousands of ordinary people taking a hand in the remolding of their lives. It does so against the background of an economic and social reality that placed limits on what could be done.

Summary

Phil Mailer is a political activist and the former editor of Combate. He lives in Lisbon, Portugal. Maurice Brinton was the pen name under which Chris Pallis wrote and translated for the British libertarian socialist group, Solidarity.

Reconstructing Spain Cultural Heritage and Memory After Civil War Dacia Viejo-Rose

Exploring the role of cultural heritage in postconflict reconstruction-whether as a motor for the prolongation of violence or as a resource for building reconciliation-this book centers on the material practices and rhetorical strategies developed around cultural heritage in post-civil war Spain and the victorious Franco regime's reconstruction. The analysis seeks to capture a discursively complex set of practices that made up the reconstruction and in which a variety of Spanish heritage sites were claimed, rebuilt or restored, and represented in various ways as signs of historical narratives, political legitimacy, and group identity. To ascertain the possible impact of post-civil war reconstruction in the medium term, the book examines two time frames: the period of political transition that followed General Franco's death in 1975; and the period 2004-2008, when Rodríguez Zapatero's government undertook initiatives to "recover the historic memory" of the war and dictatorship. The observations made of the Spanish reconstruction are analyzed in terms of how they might reveal general t...

An "official beggar" has been established in the Hungarian village of Szent-Marton, in order to keep off vagrants and gypsies. At Sheffield the other day, at an inquest on the body of a crippled dwarf, who while drunk had received fatal injuries by falling down stairs, it was stated that he had been in the infirmary with broken limbs no fewer than 33 times. Sennen Cove Lifeboats An Illustrated History Nicholas Leach

Considered one of the most treacherous areas of Britain's coastline, Land's End has seen many shipwrecks over the past 2,000 years. Where the waters of the Atlantic meet those of the English Channel, storms are frequent and violent and have caught out many a ship. Thousands have been dashed against the rocky granite coast. In 1853, the RNLI established a lifeboat station at nearby Sennen Cove, and the people of this small Cornish village have been saving lives ever since. The crews of Sennen have saved many lives in the past 160 years, helping those in distress from sailing dinghies to the largest of cargo ships. Nicholas Leach tells the story of Sennen's lifeboats and the volunteer lifeboat crews who have manned them in this fully revised and updated history of the lifeboat and wrecks off the tip of Cornwall.

Summary

Author BioNicholas Leach has written a number of books on lifeboats and lighthouses around the UK, including Cromer

Lifeboats, Hunstanton Lifeboats, Never Turn Back: A History of Caister Lifeboats, and Padstow Lifeboats. He is the editor of Ships Monthly.

Skeletons in the Closet, Skeletons in the Ground Repression, Victimization and Humiliation in a Small Andalusian Town Richard Barker

This book examines the human consequences (individual, social, cultural, and economic) of civil war and political repression in Castilleja del Campo, a town in southern Spain with barely more than 600 inhabitants today. The narrow geographical focus allows for a coherent chronological narrative with relevance to current public issues such as the unequal distribution of wealth, political polarization, the violation of human rights, government surveillance of civilian populations, and extra-legal detentions, torture and executions. … The declarations of eyewitnesses are complemented by personal documents, contemporary newspaper accounts, and documents from the town's municipal archive and other archives in the province of Seville. The work presents the events from the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in April 1931 onward from multiple points of view and analyzes the interactions among a gallery of characters: Republican and pro Franco mayors and councilmen; union leaders and affiliates; members of the fascist inspired Spanish Falange; the schoolteacher; the priest; widows an...

Swedish and German Liberalism From Factions to Parties 1860-1920 Martin Aberg

An in-depth analysis of political organization and democratization during the crucial 1860-1920 period in Sweden and Germany, this book centers on the formation of liberalism. It argues that despite ideology's individualistic traits-which made liberals less susceptible to political organization on a mass basis-its followers chose to compromise between individual and collective action. Revealing how Swedish liberalism made way for peaceful democratization and collective modes of societal organization while German liberalism turned conservative and prepared for Nazism and extremist nationalism, this record explores the mobilization, formation, and subsequent development of liberalism in these regions.

Terry Jones’ Barbarians Terry Jones, Alan Ereira

An Alternative Roman History An entertaining rewriting of Roman history from the perspective of the "Barbarians" - who weren't really barbaric at all! In this completely fresh approach to Roman history, Terry Jones offers us not only the chance to see the Romans from a non-Roman perspective, he also reveals that most of those peoples written off by the Romans as uncivilized, savage and barbaric, were in fact organized, motivated and intelligent groups of people, with no intentions of overthrowing Rome and plundering the Empire. This original and fascinating study does away with the propaganda and opens our eyes to who really established the civilized world. Delving deep into history, Terry Jones and Alan Ereira uncover the impressive cultural and technological achievements of the Celts, Goths, Persians and Vandals. In this new paperback edition, Terry and Alan travel through 700 years of history on three continents, bringing wit, irreverence, passion and the very latest scholarship to transform our view of the legacy of the Roman Empire and the creation of the modern world.

Summary

Terry Jones is best-known as a member of Monty Python. He has also written four books on Medieval England and is the author of several children's books. Alan Ereira has worked as an award-winning producer and writer of history programs on radio and television for over 40 years, and has collaborated with Terry for ten years on a number of historical films. His previous books include The People's England, The Invergordon Mutiny, The Heart of the World and (with Terry Jones) Crusades and Terry Jones' Medieval Lives.

The 43 Group Battling with Mosley's Blackshirts Morris Beckman, Vidal Sassoon, David Cesarani

Written by a founding member, the remarkable history of an incredibly effective anti-fascist action group that shut down thousands of fascist meetings and rallies

Oswald Mosley decided he could carry on where Hitler and Mussolini had left off, and on street corners his fascist speakers would proclaim "not enough Jews were burned at Belsen." Enter the 43 Group. In a ferocious, bloody, and brilliantly covert five-year campaign, they destroyed the Mosleyites. The membership of the Group was almost entirely made up of British servicemen, the original 43 members quickly swelling to more than 300 and including a Battle of Britain ace, a VC winner-and Vidal Sassoon. The Group's philosophy of the "3 D's"-Discuss, Decide and Do it-was quickly manifested on the streets of London, with literally thousands of fascist meetings and rallies sent packing. Quickly gaining a reputation, the 43 Group was organized in "wedges" of a dozen or so. These wedges would attend a British Union of Fascists rally and at a given signal would storm the speaker's platform, attacking BUF stewards and speaker. The Gro...

The Berlin Wall and Inner-German Border Wiedland Fuehr

Contemplating the division of Germany between the two rival power blocs following World War II, this history follows the establishment of the two German states in 1949 that resulted in the inner-German border and, eventually, the Berlin Wall. The study provides an introduction into the history, background, and outward appearance of this interface between two competing military, political, and economic systems. Highlighting the constant exodus of its own citizens and the resulting threatened economic collapse of East Germany, this account relates how the country forced its leadership to hermetically seal off what it called the "western border of the state" on August 13th, 1961. The sophisticated system of its border technology is also examined, from the protective strips and barbed wire fences to the alarm signals, mines, and walls that were intended to prevent any escape from the German Democratic Republic-also known as the "workers' and peasants' state."

The Cathars The Most Successful Heresy of the Middle Ages Sean Martin

The gripping, tragic true story of a peaceful sect that was wiped out in Europe's first genocide

Flourishing principally in the Languedoc and Italy, the Cathars taught that the world is evil and must be transcended through a simple life of prayer, work, fasting, and non-violence. They believed themselves to be the heirs of the true heritage of Christianity going back to apostolic times, and completely rejected the Catholic Church, regarding it as the Church of Satan; Cathar services and ceremonies, by contrast, were held in fields, barns, and people's homes. Finding support from the nobility in the fractious political situation in southern France, the Cathars also found widespread popularity among peasants and artisans. And again unlike the Church, the Cathars respected women, and women played a major role in the movement. Alarmed at the success of Catharism, the Church founded the Inquisition and launched the Albigensian Crusade to exterminate the heresy. The Crusade was the first to be directed against fellow Christians, and was also the first European genocide. With the fall of th...

The Criminal Conversation of Mrs. Norton Victorian England's "Scandal of the Century" and the Fallen Socialite Who Changed Women's Lives Forever Diane Atkinson

Westminster, London, June 22, 1836. Crowds are gathering at the Court of Common Pleas. On trial is Caroline Sheridan Norton, a beautiful and clever young woman who had been maneuvered into marrying the Honorable George Norton when she was just nineteen. Ten years older, he is a dull, violent, and controlling lawyer, but Caroline is determined not to be a traditional wife. By her early twenties, Caroline has become a respected poet and songwriter, clever mimic, and outrageous flirt. Her beauty and wit attract many male admirers, including the Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. After years of simmering jealousy, George Norton accuses Caroline and the Prime Minister of "criminal conversation" (adultery) precipitating Victorian England's "scandal of the century."

In Westminster Hall that day is a young Charles Dickens, who would, just a few months later, fictionalize events as Bardell v. Pickwick in The Pickwick Papers. After a trial lasting twelve hours, the jury's not guilty verdict is immediate, unanimous, and sensational. George is a laughingstock. Angry and humiliated he cuts Caroline...

It offers insights into individuals and groups, from grandees such as Henri de Ruvigny, député général and later Earl of Galway, to converted Catholic priests and from businessmen and communities choosing their destination for economic as well as religious reasons, to women and children moving across European frontiers or groups seeking refuge in the islands of the Indian Ocean. … The information-gathering activities of the French authorities and the reception of problematic groups such as the Camisard pr...

The Illustrated Guide to Viking Martial Arts Antony Cummins

A comprehensive guide to hand-to-hand combat that re-creates strategies used by the Vikings

The Viking shield wall is a famed battle strategy, tens or hundreds of men interlocked, reliant on their neighbors for survival. What are less well known are the actual techniques used in solo hand-to-hand combat, duels, and other forms of close-quarter engagements. Based on a comprehensive analysis of Viking sagas and other period sources, this is the first book to present a step-by-step martial system. It reveals the hitherto hidden world of Viking combat, ranging from the techniques involved in thrust, block, and cut, to the weapons used, the limitations of period armor, and the range of wounds suffered by combatants. Based on the sagas and writings of the Vikings themselves, this book represents one of the earliest fighting manuals in the world, and a fascinating insight into the warriors who were the scourge of Dark Age Europe.

The Last Legionary Life as a Roman Soldier in Britain AD400 Paul Elliott

A meticulously detailed account of life as a Roman legionary in the last days of the Roman Empire—from battle to rations, camp duties to clothing

In 400 AD, Roman rule in Britain was collapsing as the thinly stretched empire was besieged on all sides. This guide explores all aspects of Late Roman military life, from recruitment to weaponry, marriage to wages, warfare to religion. It explores the world of the Roman soldier through the eyes of one man, posted to a British garrison at the edge of the empire, and follows the soldier's life through training, battle, marriage, and business dealings, finally following him south as he leaves Britain for good in defense of Rome. When the legionary finally escapes the worst posting in the Roman Empire, it is only to join what effectively became a death march over the Alps, without food or shelter. Readers of this mesmerizing account will know what it was like to face the chanted battle cry and the charge and slashing axes of the Goths, and why the order "March out!" was so terrifying.

Paul Elliott is the author of Brotherhoods of Fear: A History of Violent Organizations and Warrior Cults: A History of Magical, Mystical and Murderous Organizations.

The Lighthouse The Mystery of the Eliean Mor Lighthouse Keepers Keith McCloskey

SummaryWhat really happened to the mysteriously vanished lighthouse keepers-a true story, evocative of The Shining

On December 26, 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with relief lighthouse men and fresh provisions. Staffed by three keepers, the lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for 10 days. Upon arrival, the superintendent, Robert Muirhead, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the surrounding island failed to show any sign of what happened to the keepers. The last entry in the lighthouse logbook had been made on December 15, and contained a number of strange and distressing entries that offered clues as to the mental state of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become "very quiet." When it was revealed that the men's oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, inevitable theories surrounding the keepers' fates were soon put forward. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder and suicide by th...

The Medieval Christmas Sophie Jackson

Medieval Christmas-roaring fires, Yule logs, boar's head on a platter, and carols. So many of our best-loved traditions have their origins in the medieval period that it would be impossible to imagine the season without holly and ivy, carol singers calling from door to door, and a general sense of celebration in the face of the harshest season. Sophie Jackson investigates the roots of the Christmas celebration, offering guidance for recreating elements of the medieval Christmas at home, tips on decorations, instructions for playing medieval games, and recipes for seasonal dishes. Fascinating facts about some of our most cherished customs, such as the nativity crib, are unearthed, as are some that are less well known-wassailing the apple trees, the ritual beating of children on December 28, and the appointment of a Lord of Misrule and a boy bishop.

The Red Army Faction, A Documentary History Volume 2: Dancing with Imperialism J. Smith, André Moncourt, Ward Churchill

The long-awaited second volume of the first-ever English-language study of the Red Army Faction (RAF)-West Germany's most notorious urban guerillas-covers the period immediately following the organization's near total decimation in 1977. During this period, the RAF was in a state of regrouping and attempting to renew its ties to the radical left in response to the emergence of a new radical youth movement in the Federal Republic, the Autonomen. This reorganization was evidenced by the shifting of focus from freeing prisoners to fighting NATO. By examining communiqués and texts from 1978 up until the 1982 May Paper, the broader movement is examined and the possibilities and perils of an armed underground organization are contrasted to the more fluid and flexible practice of the revolutionary cells at that time. The history of the 2nd of June Movement (2JM), an eclectic guerilla group with its roots in West Berlin, is also evaluated, especially in light of the split that led to some 2JM members officially disbanding the organization and rallying to the RAF. Finally, the RAF's relations...

The Rosary, the Republic, and the Right Spain and the Vatican Hierarchy, 1931?1939 Karl J. Trybus

The birth of the Second Spanish Republic in April 1931 ushered in a period of possible secularization to Spain. Liberals welcomed legal changes, while conservatives feared the special "privileges" they enjoyed would end. The Catholic Church remained a central focus of left-wing antagonism and right-wing allegiances, and conflicts surrounding the future of religion grew severe. While members of the Spanish Catholic hierarchy had clearly supported the right and disdained the left, the actions and opinions of the Vatican and its hierarchy stationed in Spain were much more nuanced. Similarly, when conservative military action plunged Spain into a Civil War in July 1936, the majority of the Spanish Catholic hierarchy openly supported their victory, but the highest levels of the Vatican remained silent. This book explores the unique position and specialized reactions of the Vatican concerning the Second Republic and Civil War. For the Holy See, the conflict in Spain was not an isolated event at the edge of the continent, but part of a larger narrative of ideological and political tension s...

The Soap Man Lewis, Harris and Lord Leverhulme Roger Hutchinson

In 1918, as the First World War was drawing to a close, the eminent liberal industrial Lord Leverhulme bought-lock, stock and barrel-the Hebridean island of Lewis. His intention was to revolutionize the lives and environments of its 30,000 people, and those of neighboring Harris, which he shortly added to his estate. For the next five years a state of conflict reigned in the Hebrides. Island seamen and servicemen returned from the war to discover a new landlord whose declared aim was to uproot their identity as independent crofter/fishermen and turn them into tenured wage-owners. They fought back, and this is the story of that fight. The confrontation resulted in riot and land seizure and imprisonment for the islanders and the ultimate defeat for one of the most powerful men of his day. The Soap Man paints a beguiling portrait of the driven figure of Lord Leverhulme, but also looks for the first time at the infantry of his opposition: the men and women of Lewis and Harris who for long hard years fought the law, their landowner, local business opinion and the entire media, to preserve...

Tracing Old Norse Cosmology The World Tree, Middle Earth and the Sun in Archeaological Perspectives Anders AndrTn, Anders Andrén

The study of Old Norse religion is a truly multidisciplinary and international field of research. The rituals, myths, and narratives of pre-Christian Scandinavia have been studied and interpreted in detail relying mainly on Christian Icelandic literature from the Middle Ages. Here, Anders Andrén offers a long-term perspective on Old Norse cosmology and argues that the fundamental ideas of an ordered universe, time, and space in Old Norse religion can be studied in a dialogue between archaeology and the Icelandic narrative tradition. Ideas about the world tree, middle earth, and the sun can be traced in images and material culture from Scandinavian prehistory. By combining the prehistoric representations with the later written record the author presents a fresh and nuanced study of the fascinating Old Norse world.

Summary

Anders Andrén is professor of archaeology at Stockholm University. He was formerly professor of medieval archaeology at Lund University, and has also been a visiting scholar in Athens, Cambridge, Copenhagen, Heidelberg, Sydney, and Uppsala.

Turning Money into Rebellion The Unlikely Story of Denmark's Revolutionary Bank Robbers Gabriel Kuhn

In May of 1989, on a quiet street in Copenhagen, police discovered an apartment that had served for years as a hideaway for Denmark's most notorious 20th-century bank robbers. The members, who belonged to a communist organization and lived modest lives in the Danish capital, had, over a period of almost two decades, sent millions in stolen dollars acquired in spectacular heists to Third World liberation movements, in particular the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. One of the most puzzling and captivating chapters from the European anti-imperialist milieu of the 1970s and 1980s, Turning Money into Rebellion is the first-ever account of the story in English, covering the events from Middle Eastern capitals and African refugee camps to the group's fateful last robbery that earned them a record haul and left a police officer dead. The book includes historical documents, illustrations, and an exclusive interview with Torkil Lauesen and Jan Weimann, two of the group's longest-standing members. It is a compelling tale of turning radical theory into action and concerns analysis...

Wearmouth & Jarrow Northumbrian Monasteries in an Historic Landscape Sam Turner

Presenting the results of new research on the monasteries of Wearmouth and Jarrow—among the most sophisticated centers of learning and artistic culture in 7th- and 8th-century Europe, and the home of Bede—and their churches, this study examines the long-lasting effect of their buildings and estates on the surrounding region from the Anglo-Saxon period to the present day. The authors trace these relationships through time with new studies of the changing landscape, the monastery precincts, and the surviving structures themselves, detailing how the historical archaeology of the sites reveals how the churches and their communities were rooted in the landscapes of Northumbria but flourished through their links with other parts of Britain and Europe. Researchers from many different backgrounds contributed to the project, using aerial, geophysical, geoarchaeological, and palaeoenvironmental surveys and digital mapping to examine the monasteries and surrounding lands. This book reveals not only the link between the churches and the region’s political and economic history, but also demonstra...

When I Heard the Bell The Loss of the Iolaire John MacLeod

On 31 December 1918, hours from the first New Year of peace, hundreds of Royal Naval Reservists from the Isle of Lewis poured off successive trains onto the quayside at Kyle of Lochalsh. A chaotic Admiralty had made no adequate arrangements for their safe journey home. Corners were cut, an elderly and recently requisitioned steam-yacht was sent from Stornoway, and that evening HMY Iolaire sailed from Kyle of Lochalsh, grossly overloaded and with life-belts for less than a third of all on board. The Iolaire never made it. At two in the morning, in pitch-black and stormy conditions, she piled onto rocks only yards from the harbour entrance and just half a mile from Stornoway pier, where thronged friends and relatives eagerly awaited the return of their heroes. 205 men drowned, 188 of them natives of Lewis and Harris-men who had come through all the alarms and dangers of the First World War only to die on their own doorstep, at the mouth of a harbour many could themselves have navigated with ease, on a day precious to Highlanders for family, celebration and togetherness. The loss of the...

Wigtown Ploughman Part of His Life John McNeillie

In following the growth into manhood of young Andy Walker, this novel provides a realistic depiction of the lives and living conditions of the rural laboring poor in Scotland in the 1930s. The son of an abusive father, Andy leaves school at age 13 and works for a succession of corrupt and cruel landowners. Driven from one estate for refusing to marry the mother of his illegitimate child, Andy drifts into a life of petty crime, all the time sinking further into a continuing cycle of violence and poverty. A chance encounter leads to the prospect of a professional boxing career, but realizing himself to be a true son of the soil, Andy returns to farm work, accepting his destiny with elegiac resignation. An uncompromisingly gritty tale filled with relentless violence and unrelieved squalor, its impact upon publication in 1938 was widespread and extraordinary as public reaction was sharply divided between those who loathed it and those who thought it true.

Women of the Gulag Portraits of Five Remarkable Lives Paul R. Gregory Paul Gregory's collection of stories brings to life the true-life stories of five women victimized by Stalin's Gulag-often in their own words-and adds to the literature a long-missing perspective: what women endured during this tragic era of Soviet history. Gregory introduces these stories with decr...

During the course of three decades, Joseph Stalin's Gulag, a vast network of forced labor camps and settlements, held many millions of prisoners. People in every corner of the Soviet Union lived in daily terror of imprisonment and execution. In researching the surviving threads of memoirs and oral reminiscences of five women victimized by the Gulag, author Paul R. Gregory has stitched together a collection of stories from the female perspective, a view in short supply. Capturing the fear, paranoia, and unbearable hardship that were hallmarks of Stalin's Great Terror, Gregory relates the stories of five women from different social strata and regions in vivid prose, from their pre-Gulag lives, through their struggles to survive in the repressive atmosphere of the late 1930s and early 1940s, to the difficulties facing the four who survived as they adjusted to life after the Gulag. These firsthand accounts illustrate how even the wrong word could become a crime against the state. The book begins with a synopsis of Stalin's rise to power, the roots of the Gulag, and the scheming and plott...
