RESIDUE AND RESISTANCE

The Green Revolution has seen huge increases in agricultural productivity driven by inputs of chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides. But the cost has been high. Chemicals have led to pollution of our soil, ground water, surface water, vegetation, and dangerous levels of chemical residue in our food-chain of crops, fruits & vegetables, milk and poultry – leading to scourge of cancer, genetic defects, mental deficiencies and other diseases.

Chemical pesticides indiscriminately kill even friendly microbes and insects, which play an important role in the healthy growth and cropping of plants. The agri-biosphere is a complex symbiotic world of microbes and insects which play a natural role in making nutrition available to the plants, pollination, disease resistance and control of pest population.

The farmers who apply these chemicals, and their families living in farming villages, are the worst affected by usage of chemicals; as also the handlers of chemical stocks.

Long and indiscriminate usage of chemicals has resulted in the pests developing Resistance or immunity to these chemicals. So, farmers are forced to apply higher quantities and more frequent applications of the chemicals to get the same produce – thereby increasing their costs and the associated pollution.

As customers become aware, they are demanding chemical-free safe foods. Governments are legislating Minimum Residue Levels or MRL of chemicals in foods, and even banning larger and larger numbers of chemical inputs.

Safe Foods Technology (SFT) is an integrated farm management technique that produces “safe food” with residues within safe levels. It incorporates a mix of organics such as farm manures, inert nutrients, plant extracts, macrobials and microbials, and in special cases even small quantities of chemicals.

Microbials offer an effective, safe and long-term solution against Residue and Resistance. Microbials are the cutting-edge high-tech category of farm inputs using living microbes (bacteria, fungus, viruses) to provide nutrition, disease control and pest control. MODE OF ACTIONVerticillium lecanii : The spores of this fungus when come in contact with the cuticle (skin) of target insects, they germinate and grow directly through the cuticle to the inner body of their host. Verticilliumlecanii proliferates throughout the insect's body, draining the insect of nutrients, and eventually killing it in around 48-72 hours. Verticillium lecanii fungus produces several toxins like bassianolide and other insecticidal toxins such as dipicolinic acid, which infect aphids, whiteflies, scale insects and cause mortality.Beauveria bassiana: Beauveria bassiana conidia infect the insect skin by penetrating and lysing (with enzymes) the epicuticle. Once inside the insect, it grows and releases toxins called Beauvericin and Oosporin that weaken the host's immune system. Eventually the entire body cavity is filled with fungal mass. MAHASTRA(Bacillus thuringiensis)

MODE OF ACTIONBacillus thuringiensis kurstaki (or Bt) is a common gram positive, spore-forming, soil bacterium. When resources are limited, vegetative Bt cells undergo sporulation, synthesizing a protein crystal during spore formation. Proteins in these crystals are called Cry (Crystal) endotoxins and have been known for decades to display insecticidal activity against specific insect groups. This multi-step toxicity process includes ingestion of the Cry protein by a susceptible insect, solubilisation, and processing from a protoxin to an activated toxin core in the insect digestive fluid. The toxin core travels across the peritrophic matrix and binds to specific receptors called cadherins on the brush border membrane of the gut cells. Toxin binding to cadherin proteins results in activation of an oncotic cell death pathway and formation of toxin oligomers that bind to GPI-anchored proteins and concentrate on regions of the cell membrane called lipid rafts. MODE OF ACTIONIt releases an oxidase enzyme, which allows it to metabolize non-assimilating micro nutrients e.g., sulphur, zinc, managanese and iron. They require inorganic molecules as an electron donor and inorganic carbon (such as carbon dioxide) as a source. They obtain nutrients by oxidizing iron and sulphur with oxygen.
