This year’s tour programme will include trips to some of Beijing’s most popular destinations, along with an opportunity to participate in pre- or post-convention tours. Come and experience the sights and sounds of Beijing up close, with opportunities to visit the unforgettable Great Wall, the Forbidden City and many exciting locations for special social events throughout the week. Full tour details are on page 13.

Message from the PresidentThis year’s Convention will find us, for the first time in IPLOCA’s history, in China. We are delighted to be able to meet our members and guests in the amazing city of Beijing and to share opportunities to visit some incredible sights in Beijing and beyond. We look forward to an excellent week of technical discussions, networking and tours and we will also be offering a pre- and post-convention tour programme to visit Xi’an and its renowned Terracotta Warriors. These statues represent only a small portion of

the 8,000 strong underground army buried in front of the Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s tomb (221-207 BC) to defend him in the afterlife.

In addition to the technical presentations and discussions there will be many opportunities to meet with colleagues and peers from all around the world. Please note that immediately following the IPLOCA Convention, from 17-19 September, China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau, a Regular Member of IPLOCA, will host the 7th International Pipeline Exhibition 2011 at the Beijing Exhibition Center. In 2010, more than 220 exhibitors and nearly 20,000 visitors attended this exhibition. Please take these dates into careful consideration when making your travel plans.

Online registration for the IPLOCA Convention will open on 2nd May 2011 and we encourage you to plan early and apply for tourist visas well in advance to ensure that you are not disappointed.

I look forward to seeing you in China!

Sincerely,

Karl Trauner PresidentIPLOCA

BeijingFormerly called Peking, Beiping, Dadu, Jingcheng, Yanjing and Khanbalik in different periods of Chinese history, Beijing is the capital city of the People’s Republic of China. It is also the nation’s political and cultural hub. Additionally, it is the focal point for the country’s transportation, scientific and technological development, education and communication. Its present-day population is over 11 million, making it the second largest city in China.

Beijing is universally acknowledged for its rich history and cultural development. It has been the capital city of many dynasties in Chinese history. The city’s grid pattern and original walls were first laid down in the 13th century when it was called Khanbalik, the capital city of the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). It was rebuilt and named Beijing by the Han Chinese rulers of the subsequent Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It also served as capital city of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

Beijing has a wealth of historical sites and enchanting natural scenery, making it a compelling tourist destination. It offers a staggering array of attractions including the resplendent Forbidden City; the majestic Tiananmen Square (the world’s largest public square) and the grand meandering Great Wall.

Eating Out / Beijing CuisineA typical Beijing greeting is “Have you eaten?” Food has great importance in the life of Beijingers and Beijing cuisine has rich flavours influenced by culinary traditions from all over China.

The Beijing Roasted Duck is the epitome of Beijing cuisine and is famous both at home and abroad for its thin, crispy skin, with authentic versions of the dish serving mostly the skin and little meat.

Beijing Imperial Cuisine is a style of food with origins in the Imperial Palace and consists of dishes served to the Emperor and his court. Dishes are characterized by complex preparation techniques, the freshest ingredients and elaborate presentation, including colourful vegetable carvings.

Beijing street snacks are another tradition in Beijing and include pancakes filled with sweetened bean paste, sticky rice cakes, and meat skewers; they can be found across the city, for example at Wangfujing Snack Street, Gui Jie, Longfu Temple Snack Street.

Besides the local fare, a wide range of international cuisines can be found across the city that will satisfy all tastes from upscale fine dining to smaller family run operations.

ElectricityThe electrical power in China is 220 volts. Hotels generally provide power outlets accommodating both straight two-pin plugs and triangular three-pin Chinese plugs.

ShoppingIn general, opening hours for the shopping centres are 09.00 to 21.30, Monday to Sunday. Markets are generally open from 08.30 to 17.00, Monday to Sunday.

Beijing is a real paradise for shopping fans. One can find everything in Beijing, from antique shops, silk markets and tailor shops to the most luxurious designer boutiques.

Please note: while excellent copies of brand-named goods are readily available in China, some countries impose heavy penalties for the import of counterfeit goods, including confiscation and even heavy fines.

BargainingWhilst bargaining is very common in Chinese markets, it is not accepted in western style shopping malls or international hotels. One is expected to bargain in the market places, with shop keepers frequently demanding four times the value of the actual selling price.

TimeBeijing is GMT+8 hours.

TippingTipping is not a common practice in China. Whilst some westerners choose to tip in restaurants and hotels, the Chinese themselves do not tip.

We recommend that you only tip when you receive exceptional service. Below are some rough guidelines:

• Restaurants (if service is not included): 5% • Taxi drivers: Do not tip • Hotel Concierge: CNY 10 • Chamber Maids: CNY 10

Tours 1 & 4 – The Great Wall and Ming Tombs

Monday, 12 September 09.00 – 17.00 Tuesday, 13 September 09.00 – 17.00 (lunch included)

There is a Chinese saying “One is not a true man, unless he reaches the Great Wall”. China’s Great Wall stretches from East to West for more than 5,000 kilometres. Its origins can be traced to the 7th century BC, when independent kingdoms constructed separate walls to keep out nomads. These were later linked by China’s first emperors to become one of the most impressive creations of mankind and one of the few that is visible from space. Badaling Great Wall is the best-preserved and most imposing section of the Great Wall.On the way to the Great Wall, participants will see some of the iconic constructions for the 2008 Olympic Games, including the famous Bird’s Nest Stadium and the Water Cube. After lunch, participants will continue to the site of the Ming Dynasty Imperial Tombs, carefully chosen according to the Feng Shui principles of Water, Wind, Earth and Fire. ChangLing is the burial place of 13 of the 15 Ming dynasty emperors.

Tours 2 & 9 – Forbidden City and Tiananmen SquareMonday, 12 September 08.30 – 12.30 (morning) Wednesday, 14 September 13.30 – 17.30 (afternoon)

This tour highlights the monumental political features of China’s fascinating history.Tiananmen Square is the geographical centre of Beijing city. It is the largest public space in the world, able to accommodate one million people. Witness to so many events that have shaped China’s history, the square features the Chinese Parliament (Hall of the People), as well as the mausoleum of Chairman Mao.From Tiananmen Square, we will enter into the Imperial Residence of the Ming and Qing Dynasty Emperors, called the Forbidden City, as common citizens were entirely prohibited from entering its gates. Even within its walls, access was restricted based on one’s rank in the court hierarchy. The complex is almost twice the size of Vatican City and is home to many of China’s ancient relics within its 70 structures and 9,999 rooms.

Tour 3 – The Silk Factory and Pearl StoreMonday, 12 September 13.30 – 17.00

Join us in unveiling the hidden secrets of China’s silk culture. Participants will discover the secrets of silk, from the life cycle of the silk worm to the weaving process and, of course, have the opportunity to peruse the beautiful silk products that are created here.Pearls are synonymous with everything rare, fine, admirable and valuable. China is a major producer of pearls. Participants will discover how fresh-water pearls are cultivated and transformed into beautiful jewellery, sculptures or even blended into face creams.

Tour 5 – Exploring the HutongTuesday, 13 September 8.30 – 12.30

A hutong is an alley formed by lines of traditional courtyard residences. In Beijing, many neighbourhoods were formed by joining these residences together. In contrast to the court life and elite culture represented by the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven, the Hutong district reflects the culture of the common Beijinger and forms the heart of Old Beijing. Every hutong has its own story to tell…Since the mid-20th century, the number of Beijing hutongs has dropped dramatically as they are demolished to make way for new roads and buildings. In recent years some hutongs have been designated as protected areas in an attempt to preserve this aspect of Chinese cultural history. This tour will take participants around the Hutong by rickshaw and will include a visit to the Drum Tower. The beat of the drum from these ancient towers was used by the people to tell the hour of the day and the towers are still in use today.

14

Tour 6 – Urban Planning Museum & Panda VisitTuesday, 13 September 13.30 – 17.00

Beijing’s Urban Planning Museum is designed to capture the rapid rate of development of Beijing and illustrate its evolving architectural styles. Visitors will see what Beijing looked like 50 years ago, and how the city, including the business districts and the Olympic village, will probably look 20 years from now. A photograph of the city layout is printed on 1,000 glass floor panels. The map is so large that people can actually stand on the exact spot where they live. After the museum, participants will be taken to Beijing Zoo for a short visit to see the pandas. The zoo has a long history of caring for giant pandas and, in 1963, was the first to successfully breed pandas in captivity. The panda is native to central-western and south-western China. Due to farming, deforestation, hunting and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived, and now figures on the endangered species list with only 1,500 to 3,000 individuals known to be living in the wild. Some reports show that the number of pandas in the wild is on the rise.

This famous World Heritage Site was discovered accidentally in 1974. The incredible army of soldiers, archers, horses and chariots in full battle array has guarded Emperor Qin’s tomb since 210 BC. Archaeologists estimate the pits may contain as many as 8,000 figures. Each figure is unique, and the painstaking repair and excavation still continues in three pits which are protected inside huge hangars.

Afternoon Excursion to the Ancient City Wall

The first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) began to enlarge the wall built initially during the old Tang Dynasty (618 -907), creating the modern Xi’an City Wall. Today, it is the most complete wall to have survived in China, as well as being one of the largest ancient military defense systems in the world. The wall now stands 12 m (40 ft) tall, 12-14 m (40-46 ft) wide at the top and 15-18 m (50-60 ft) thick at the bottom. The wall and its moat stretch 13.7 km (8.5 miles) around the city. Thriving trees and flowers decorate the classical Chinese architecture of the wall, further adding to the beauty of the city of Xi’an.Participants will take a late afternoon flight back to Beijing.

PIH Golf TournamentTuesday, 13 September

2011 is the 10th Anniversary of PIH sponsorship of the IPLOCA Golf Tournament and this year PIH is hoping to host the event at the Beijing CBD International Golf Club.

Whilst there are many excellent courses in Beijing, the CBD course is the closest to the China World Hotel. Many of you may know that traffic can be a problem in Beijing, so in view of the timetable for the day we are limited by the distance and journey time.

Beijing CBD International Golf Club was designed by Brit Stenson, the great PGA designer. Stenson has designed over 10 PGA courses in the US with extensive experience in golf course design. As the only TPC (Tournament Player Course) style course in Asia, CBD Club is at the PGA standard in both design and construction. Located at 99 Gaobeidian Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing, it is about a 30 minute drive from downtown Beijing. The golf club is able to provide buggies and sets of golf clubs for our participants.

PIH is in the process of finalising details with the golf club and will confirm once the arrangements have been completed.

LotteryThis year the prize for the Final Banquet Lottery has been kindly offered by Volvo and Renault Trucks. The lucky winner will receive a purchasing certificate for a car to the value of EUR 25,000. Lottery tickets are CNY 460 (approx. EUR 50) each and will be available for purchase from the Registration Desk throughout the week. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Final Banquet on Friday evening.

IPLOCA President, Karl Trauner and his wife, Christine, have chosen to donate the funds received from the sale of the lottery tickets towards HOPE’87, an Austrian initiative co-operating closely with the Austrian Federal Chancellery and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in the support of youth employment projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Central and Eastern Europe. This international initiative is based on the UN resolution 40/16 “Opportunities for Youth” adopted by the General Assembly on the occasion of the International Youth Year of the UN (1985).

Young people are encouraged to show initiative by creating locally-developed projects that generate training and employment for themselves and other young people. Special attention is given to humanitarian projects in disaster areas suffering the effects of flood, earthquake or drought where the provision of essential goods, medication and medical care combined with rehabilitation activities encourage an efficient and fast recovery of the local infrastructure.
