This guide describes the configuration of OpenVPN on Windows 8 using the installation package from the OpenVPN community. The walk-through is based on openvpn-install-2.3.6-I601-x86_64.exe.

If you would like to use a more integrated client which handles administrator permissions properly and thus adjusts the routing table correctly, have a look at the Viscosity guide.

    Step 3 / 29

To begin setting up OpenVPN, download and install the OpenVPN installation package.

Start the installation by right-clicking on the downloaded file and selecting Run as Administrator. Allow the installer to make changes to your computer.

A welcome screen appears. Click Next.

  • The license agreement for OpenVPN gets displayed. Click I Agree.

Make sure that all components are selected for installation. Click Next.

  • If you do not want to install OpenVPN in its default destination folder, click Browse... to define another folder. Otherwise, just click Install.

While the installation runs, you might be asked to install components (e.g. the VPN tunnel interface driver) for which administrator permissions are needed. Allow the installation of these files. When the installation is completed, click Next.

  • A last installation dialog is shown. Uncheck Show Readme and click Finish.

  • Download the OpenVPN configuration file IPredator-Windows-Password.ovpn for Windows to your Downloads folder.

You need to have administrative permissions to configure OpenVPN on Windows. Either login as Administrator or execute the following commands as Administrator by using the context menu.

Copy IPredator-Windows-Password.ovpn to the sub-folder config of your OpenVPN installation.

  • When asked to give access to the destination folder while copying the configuration file, click Continue to grant administrative access.

    Step 12 / 29

  • The OpenVPN installer should have placed the icon OpenVPN GUI on your desktop. OpenVPN GUI should always be run as administrator, otherwise the routing table is not set up correctly under certain circumstances. Right-click on it and select Run as administrator.

A new item got placed in the taskbar, showing two computers with red screens. The red screens symbolize you are not connected. Right-click on the item and select Connect.

  • The OpenVPN connection window pops up. A dialog requesting a Username and a Password is shown. Enter your IPredator credentials and click OK.

  • When the connection has been established successful, the OpenVPN connection window closes. Notice the red screens on the OpenVPN taskbar item turned green.

  • Saving credentialsGo to previous section Previous Next Go to next section

    Step 16 / 29

If you want to save the credentials on your machine, you need to download another configuration file for this to work.

  • When saving passwords for OpenVPN, keep in mind that they are saved in plain text and that there is no hashing applied. This means that everybody having access to your machine, either physically or via the network, is able to read your user name and your password. We strongly advise to use at least an encrypted container to store your credentials. TrueCrypt is recommended for this purpose, although Microsoft also includes BitLocker on Windows 8.

To continue, download IPredator-Windows-Password-File.ovpn and IPredator.auth to your Downloads folder. Do not copy these two files to the config subfolder of your OpenVPN installation yet.

Open IPredator.auth from the Downloads folder with Notepad. There are two lines in IPredator.auth, your user name and your password. Replace those placeholders with your credentials. The user name needs to be placed in the first line, the password in the second one. Save your changes and close Notepad.

IPredator.auth needs to have proper line endings. Add an empty line after the PASSWORD line. To achieve this, just hit Enter twice after typing in your password.

  • Now copy your version of IPredator-Windows-Password-File.ovpn and IPredator.auth to the config subfolder of your OpenVPN installation like you did it before.

  • Right click on OpenVPN's task bar item. A context menu appears where you can choose between the two installed configurations. Select IPredator-Windows-Password-File/Connect.

  • The OpenVPN connection window pops up again and shows the connection log. If you entered your credentials correctly, you should now be connected without having been asked to enter your user name and password.

Again, only save your credentials this way when you are also using at least an encrypted container to store them in!

  • Disable servicesGo to previous section Previous Next Go to next section

    Step 21 / 29

Now that your OpenVPN connection works, you need to disable certain services on the VPN interface. Moveyour mouse to the lower right hot corner to display the Charms Bar. Select Settings.

  • Select Control Panel.

    Click Network and Internet.

  • Open the Network and Sharing Center.

  • From the menu on the left side, select Change adapter settings.

  • The list of available Network Connections is shown. Right-click on the one with the device name TAP-Win32Adapter V9 to open its context menu and select Properties.

  • On the Networking tab, uncheck all items but Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Close the properties window by clicking OK.

  • This guides configuration connects your client to our OpenVPN service via UDP. As outlined in the OpenVPN settings, connecting via TCP and/or to different ports is also supported. TCP is needed if you haveto go through a HTTP proxy to reach our servers or if your provider rate-limits UDP connections on port 1194.

If your problem is still not solved please visit the online online chat or use the Help Wizard to contact the support.
