RIYADH/MOSCOW: Pakistan’s Prime Minister NawazSharif yesterday expressed “deep concern” to Saudi KingSalman over escalating tensions between the Sunnikingdom and predominantly Shiite Iran. Sharif visitedRiyadh in an effort to ease those tensions and is to headtoday to Saudi’s rival Iran where he is expected to meetPresident Hassan Rouhani. “ The prime ministerexpressed our deep concern on the recent escalation oftensions” between Riyadh and Tehran, Islamabad’s for-eign ministry spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said. “He alsocalled for an early resolution of differences throughpeaceful means, in the larger interest of ummah (theIslamic nation), particularly during these challengingtimes.”

According to the Saudi Press Agency, King Salman“welcomed the prime minister of Pakistan and his dele-gation” to his palace. The report gave no details of theirdiscussions, which SPA earlier said were to touch onregional as well as bilateral issues. “The purpose of thevisit is to mediate and to end the standoff between thetwo countries,” a Pakistani government official told AFP,requesting anonymity, before the prime ministerarrived. SPA said the prime minister was accompaniedby Pakistan’s powerful army chief, General Raheel Sharif.During yesterday’s meeting, Pakistan “assured the king-dom of its support” for a Saudi coalition of 34 nations tocombat “terrorism” in the Islamic world, the Pakistanistatement said. “It was agreed that both countrieswould work together to defeat our common enemy -terrorism and extremism.”

Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin and theEmir of Qatar yesterday discussed the Syrian crisis, asglobal powers seek to push the warring sides towardsthe negotiating table. “Russia plays a main role when itcomes to stability in the world,” Sheikh Tamim binHamad Al-Thani said at the start of the meeting at theKremlin. “We very much want to develop relations withRussia and find a solution to a number of problemsrelated to stability in some countries of our region,” headded in translated remarks released by the Kremlin.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said bothMoscow and Doha were expecting that, in accordancewith a UN-backed plan, talks between the Syrian gov-ernment and the opposition would begin “in the near-est future, already this month.” Lavrov said Russia andQatar had also agreed to step up measures to battle ter-rorism. “Concrete steps that can facilitate this have beenagreed,” he said in televised remarks, without elaborat-ing.

The two countries also agreed to ramp up economiccooperation, with Putin telling Sheikh Tamim thatRussia is keen to coordinate efforts in energy, “especiallyin the gas sphere.” “I am hoping that all the efforts we’vemade over the past years to build our ties will serve agood basis for further steps,” Putin said. “Investmentcooperation is deemed to be very important,” the Qatariruler said for his part. BAGHDAD: Search operations were underway yesterday forthree Americans kidnapped from a “suspicious apartment” inBaghdad, in a rare abduction of Western nationals in the Iraqicapital. Kidnappers in Iraq have recently seized groups of Qatarisand Turks, but it has been years since Americans were abducted,with Iraqis suffering the most from kidnappings for ransoms or tosettle scores. The Islamic State group, which overran large areasin 2014, has abducted thousands of people in Iraq, while Shiiteparamilitary forces opposed to the jihadists have also carried outkidnappings.

“Three people carrying American nationality were kidnappedwhile they were in Dura... inside a suspicious apartment,” aspokesman for the Baghdad security command said in a state-ment. “Security forces have begun searching for them,” he said.There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the abduc-tions and the identities and employment of the victims wereunclear. A police colonel said on condition of anonymity that anIraqi translator took the Americans for “drinking and women” atan apartment in the Dura area.

Militiamen “attacked the place”, the colonel said, adding that“they were kidnapped from inside the apartment, not from thestreet”. They were apparently taken to another area, as Dura wassearched and they were not found, the officer said. He said thatthe translator was also kidnapped.

Rise in Kidnappings Brothels and alcohol shops have been repeatedly targeted by

powerful Shiite militia groups in Baghdad over the years. Iraqiparliament speaker Salim Al-Juburi condemned the rise in “casesof foreigners being kidnapped in Iraq,” saying it would harm thecountry’s relations with other states. “The kidnapping of theAmerican citizens yesterday, and before them the Qatari hunters,whose fate is still unknown, without a doubt indicates theincreasing work of organized gangs in Iraq,” Juburi said in a state-ment. US State Department spokesman John Kirby said Sundaythat the US was “working with the full cooperation of the Iraqiauthorities to locate and recover the individuals”. Both Juburi andthe police colonel said the kidnappings took place Sunday, butsome reports indicated they happened earlier. Iraq turned toparamilitary forces dominated by Iran-backed Shiite militias in2014 to help combat IS jihadists.

These groups, which fall under an umbrella organizationknown as the Hashed al-Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization units,have played a key role in the fight against IS. But they and theiraffiliates have also been accused of abuses including summaryexecutions, kidnappings and destruction of property. The US isleading a coalition of countries that have bombed thousands ofIS targets in Iraq and Syria and which are providing training toBaghdad’s forces. Washington has also dispatched special forcesto Iraq to carry out raids against the jihadists. — AFP
