An adaptation by David Almond of his popular novel in his first commission with Live Theatre, The Savage will mark the opening of the new children’s writing centre, Live Tales.

Blue imagines a ‘truely wild’ character in order to escape the neighbourhood bully and come to terms with the loss of his father.

This is a family friendly play with music that will appeal to both adults and young people aged 9 and above, in a contemporary fable about the importance of creativity in making us whole.

No one’s touched the buffet, there’s a big gap on the wall where a mirror’s fallen off and something is stinking the place out.

Julie and Ruby are sisters coming to terms with the death of formidable matriarch Iris who still manages to control their lives from beyond the grave. On the night of the funeral, Julie gets off with Gerry, the crime scene cleaner. Maybe that’ll help. It doesn’t.

When their mother’s unusual bequest unearths a story that leaves some indelible marks, something more than a deep clean is needed.

Iris is a heady cocktail of caustic humour and tender pathos from the writer of the hit 2015 Edinburgh show The Soaking Of Vera Shrimp (“achingly beautiful and utterly compelling” ★★★★ The Telegraph) and Fat Alice (“Carr sustains the bold premise through the vividness of her writing” ★★★★ The Times).

About the cast

and writer

Katy Cavanagh JulieKaty makes her Live Theatre debut having recently bid a fond farewell to Weatherfield where she spent seven years playing Julie Carp in Coronation Street. Katy’s Theatre credits include Sergeant Musgrave’s Dance (Oxford Stage Company), Two and Two/2 (Bolton Octagon), Ghosts and Mad For It (Manchester Royal Exchange). Her many television appearances include Cracker (ITV), Shameless (C4) and Dalziel & Pasco (BBC) amongst others and her films include Rehab and Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise. Katy has also worked extensively on BBC Radio 4.

Joe Caffrey GerryJoe trained at LAMDA and has appeared in many Live Theatre productions over the last 27 years including Wet House and Cooking with Elvis for which he was awarded Performer of the Year at the 2013 Journal Culture Awards. He acted in Live Theatre’s A Walk On Part and in its transfer to the West End, as well as The Pitmen Painters, and on its West End transfer and National Tour. Joe has also appeared in Billy Elliot The Musical and worked extensively in TV and Film.

Sam Neale RubySam is a regular actor at Live Theatre at which her theatre credits include Nativities, The Girls from Poppyfield Close and Write Stuff. She has also acted in Continuum (Theatre Cap-a-Pie), A Bit of Respect (Operating Theatre) and most recently her own play with her new company Flaming Barstools Productions. Her Television credits include Vera (ITV), Eternal Law (ITV), Wolfblood (BBC) and Doctors (BBC) and in the films Interview with a Hitman and Frank.

Alison Carr WriterIris is Alison’s first full length commission for Live Theatre. Alison won Live Theatre’s 40th Anniversary Bursary in 2013 for The Soaking of Vera Shrimp which transferred to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Her other plays at Live Theatre include The Girls From Poppyfield Close and Clint. Alison is a member of the Traverse 50 group of writers and her recent plays include Fat Alice (Traverse Theatre and tour). Alison has worked with theatre companies including Paines Plough, nabokov and Old Vic New Voices. Her radio credits include Dolly Would (BBC Radio 4) and The Verb (BBC Radio 3).
