Founded in 1999 by managingdirector Shay Murphy, thecompany has developed over

the years and the experiencedgarnered during that period has playedno small part in the success ofRingroad Ltd. Headquartered inRathcoole, the business expanded toinclude locations at Kingswood inDublin and Gibbstown, Navan, Co

Meath. However, Shay made the decision to

relocate the business this year and theheadquarters will now be moved tobigger premises at Kingswood wherethe company already operates a DOEcentre for the last two years.

Office manager Helen Callahanspoke to Irish Trucker about the moveand revealed that logistically as well

as practically that it all made sense tohave their wide range of services atthe one location. Aside the from theDOE testing, Ringroad Ltd alsoprovide mobile repairs, full electricalservicing, EBS programming and truckdiagnostics, ABS testing, 24-hourbreakdown and recovery, andtachograph and speed limitercalibration, while the Dublin based firm

is widely known for its ABS, EBS, air brake and clutchspecialist and has the expertise to service and repair anycommercial vehicle. In the last few years, they have alsobeen appointed sole distributers of Schneider alluwoodlightweight box bodies.

“We are hoping to make the move over a period of timeand cause as little disruption to the business as possible. We won't be closing down at any stage during thetransition period, so customers can be assured ofreceiving the same level of service as normal,” saidHelen.

“Shay decided that it would make more sense to jointhe Dublin premises together and there was moreroom to expand at Kingswood. He has acquired apremise right next door to the DOE Test Centre andthis virtually means we are a one-stop shop, which isa lot easier for the customer and indeed ourselves.”

Helen revealed that despite the current economicrecession, Ringroad Ltd is working hard to ensure thatthe continue to provide the level of service that theirlarge customer base has become accustomed to over

the past 12 years.“Business is fairly good at the moment. There is a greater

emphasis placed on maintenance now then there was in thepast. Hauliers and bus operators are not upgrading theirfleets as much as they use too, which is understandable, given the nature of the economy at the moment.

“So more and more are turning their attention to keepingtheir fleets well maintained so that they can operate themfor a longer period. We have the experience and theequipment to carry out any sort of maintenance work andthe staff here are highly trained in what they do.”

Over the years, the company has focused more on movingwith the times and to do so they have had to add thetechnology to their portfolio in order to carry out theirservices to the highest order and they are fully approvedand authorized by the likes of WABCO, Knorr-Bremse,Haldex, Brakemaster and Stoneridge Tachographs.

The service and repair game isjust about as demanding anindustry there is, and for almost

a quarter of a century now the Moranfamily at Eagle Motors in Mullingar arecontinuing to make it work.

The business was set up by founderJimmy Moran and specialises in repairand servicing of trucks, trailers, vansand cars. Their customer base hasgrown considerably over the years, somuch so that they moved into a biggerpremises five years ago in the

Mullingar Business Park (the correctaddress now is Eagle Motors, Zone CMullingar Business Park, Mullingar, CoWestmeath).

However, Jimmy built his first garageat the family homestead in 1974,trading under ‘Moran’s Garage’, wherehe specialised in maintenance andrepairs of cars and tractors. In 1989,he established ‘Eagle Motors’ and 12months later the business moved toMullingar, where things really took off.

By this stage Jimmy’s eldest son

Declan was on board and EagleMotors then began specialising inrepair and servicing of trucks, trailers, vans, jeeps and cars.

Jimmy’s son James spoke to usabout the company’s origins and givesan insight to how they have becomeone of the leading garages in themidlands area.

With advanced vehicle technologyrapidly becoming standard-fit on themodern motor and commercialvehicles, workshops increasingly need

The Eagle flysIn the service and repair game for over 20 years now, Eagle Motors inMullingar is still going strong. Irish Trucker spoke to the company’sManaging Director, James Moran, to find out the latest.

technical support to be able to offer aprofessional and profitable service totheir customers.

“Certainly times have changed andthe make up of cars and trucks hasare very much different; the work nowis far more technical than it use to be,”said James.

He revealed that their reputation forproviding a top quality and efficientservice is the main reason why theyhave such a large customer base.

“Most of the work that we havesecured has come about as a result of‘word of mouth’ from one customer toanother and I find that this is the bestform of advertising. If you areproviding a reliable service that thecustomers are happy with, then thatwill attract new business.

“A lot of work centres around trailersand this is an area that we specialisein, there are not many othercompanies around that do that and wehave a lot of trailers coming in forrepair work.”

Some companies can be founddragging their heels when it comes to

moving with the times, but EagleMotors certainly can’t be accused ofthis. This is one of the main reasonsthat they have been so successful andlook set to continue to do so for sometime to come.

James stressed that they also have anumber of private customers andowner drivers, who are treated thesame as the bigger companies, whichhe feels is an important aspect of thebusiness.

“We have a wide variety ofcustomers from large firms to ownerdrivers. To us, there is no difference. We don’t turn away any work andensure that the job is completed to ahigh standard in quick time,” saidJames.

The company boss knows thatdowntime is something that can be athorn in the side of all hauliers or vandrivers and James revealed that EagleMotors offer a round the clock call outservice for their customers.

“No one likes to have their vehicle offthe road for too long as it is notmaking money while it’s lying idle. We

understand this and try to ensure a jobis done as quickly as possible, whilealso ensuring that it is done right,” hestated.

“We have five recovery vehicles foremergencies, while we also do someon-site work for the customers. Thereis always someone on call 24 hours aday and this is appreciated by theclients that we cater for.”

Another string to the bow of EagleMotors is that James also uses hiscontacts in the business to buyvehicles for some of his customers.

“We do a bit of truck and van sales,”explained the Mullingar native. “If oneof my customers comes to me lookingfor a vehicle then I usually can findsomething that suits them. I’ve beendoing that for a few years now and itworks pretty well.

“There is also a comprehensive partsdepartment here where we stockplenty of stuff and lads can come inand buy the across the counter. If wedon’t have a part, we will ensure tohave it later on that day or first thingthe next morning, depending on when

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS 51

Page 11: Irish Trucker magazine October 2011

it is looked for.” James revealed that the employees were highly trained

and that they could deal with any eventuality with regardsto truck and trailer repairs.

“We have a reliable staff here. There are five employed intotal and everyone knows there role and all have theexperience to deal with any problems, which is reassuring

for us and the customers,” he confirmed. “The location of our business has really helped us as

most of our regulars are based in this locality. As I saidbefore, we are here to provide an efficient service and wehave no problem working on in the evenings to get a jobcompleted.”

For the time being, James is quite happy to maintain thelevel of business that they provide for as he feels that thisis not the period to be making drastic changes.

“The safest option at the moment is to hold on to what wehave. We have a large customer base with a lot of repeatwork and if that is maintained, I’d behappy enough. A lot of money hasbeen spent on the new premisesand there will be no furtherchanges for the time beinganyway.”

Eagle Motors is open fromMonday to Friday 8.30am to7.00pm and from 8.00am to2.00pm on Saturdays, ensuringthat their customers can availof a time which suits them.

PCs in a seven-figure deal. Thesystem, in four of Glanbia's Irishdivisions, was provided bywarehousing systems specialistHeavey RF of Dublin.

Heavey RF would replaced Glanbia'smanual system in two warehousingsites and two manufacturing sites, where the new technology isintegrated with the company's SAPsystem, and has reportedly shown asignificant increase in productivitywhile bringing accuracy close to 100per cent.

Glanbia's TransportDevelopment Manager said atthe time: "The new systemhas surpassed ourexpectations. A massiveamount of information isprovided in real-time, which isinvaluable as we can seeexactly what's happening andwhere we need to repositionour resources."

The new system hasimproved production planningand also labour planningwithin Glanbia. All availablewarehouse resources can befocused on key tasks andworkloads can be quicklyaltered to ensure that Glanbiacan respond instantly to itscustomers evolving demands.

“We operate a 24-hour shiftcycle and can now accurately

calculate the number of staff neededper shift to fulfil every order,” Cormacexplained. “Before we could onlyestimate how many operatives wereneeded, which led to excess workerson some shifts.”

He added: “My own role here is toco-ordinate the route and to organiseall bulk haulage to the market place, through our own fleet to our agentnetwork. We’d have approximately 400agents available around the country,so we would gave a fairly substantialfleet.”

With a substantial fleet, comessubstantial costs and Cormac admitsthat significant rise in fuel costs overthe past 12 months has had an impacton the company, its competitors andcustomers.

“They have had a massive impact,”said the Transport DevelopmentManager. “Obviously with the rise inprices the cost of services has had togo up and that’s had an impact oneveryone business for everyoneincluding ourselves.”

However, despite the rising costs infuel and the spiralling economicdownturn, Cormac remains as positiveas ever business at GlanbiaConsumer Foods will stay strong intothe future.

“We do see our root to market as astrength and a competitiveadvantage,” he said. “We see it assomething that will stand to us and weare well placed to survive going intothe long-term.”

Good to hear.

Wyser than everThe last few years have been turbulent times in every industry but nonemore so than the haulage sector, which has experienced many changes, the majority of which have not benefitted hauliers.

IRISH TRUCKER & LIGHT COMMERCIALS

Wyse Transport wasestablished ten years ago

Rising fuel costs, aligned with lowering rates are twoof the most problematic areas within the industry atthe moment. It is becoming increasingly harder for

transport companies to function to their desired level andonly a select few are managing this at the moment.

One such company is Swords based Wyse Transport, which has ensured to keep moving with the times anddelivering a professional and efficient service to its largecustomer base, which extends far beyond these shores.

Founded by Bernard White and Ken Maher in 2001,Wyse Transport specialises in general haulage andoperates in the UK and the continent as well as Ireland. With 25 tractor units operating on a daily basis, you canenvisage the size of this operation, which takes greatexpertise to run.

Both Bernard and Ken have extensively knowledge of thehaulage industry and that has really helped them make ahuge success of the business in such a relatively shortperiod of time. For this month's edition of Irish Trucker, wespeak to Ken about the trials and tribulations of thehaulage industry in modern day Ireland.

Operating in the UK and continent brings about its perilsas legislation is tighter than ever and one wrong movecould prove more hassle than imaginable and Kenstressed that it was essential to do everything by the book.

“There is a lot of legislation within the haulage industryanyway, but when you go abroad you have to make surethat all the paperwork is correct, otherwise you can expectlong delays. In the UK at the moment, there is a bigproblem with cabotage, which is the national carriage ofgoods for hire or reward carried out by non-residenthauliers on a temporary basis in a host Member State,”revealed Ken.

“VOSA are saying that free trade should be allowed, butthen you have trucks being impounded for pulling loadsthat they claim they shouldn't be, when in fact they haveevery right to do so in the majority of cases.”

The Graduated Fixed Penalty scheme allows VOSA orthe police to ask offending non-UK drivers for a deposit of£300 to £900 before allowing them to proceed, if foundguilty of the offence, but Ken feels that if there is to be freetrade, then the laws should be more lenient.

Page 25: Irish Trucker magazine October 2011

“Backloads are a major part of the business and it is nouse having a tractor unit and trailer sitting around doingnothing, but costing money. If there is work to be done, weshould be allowed do it, without so much hassle.”

Wyse Transport's continental work sees them operatemainly in Holland, Spain, Italy and Portugal, although theyare geared to travel to any part of Europe and Ken statedthat a reliable workforce plays a huge part in the smoothrunning of the company.

“The drivers are the ambassadors of the company andthey are the ones out meeting the customers on a dailybasis. Without them, the company would not be where it istoday and I must say we are very fortunate to have thecalibre of drivers that we do. We have a very low turnoverof staff and anyone that usually joins us stays for a longtime.”

Wyse Transport is continually expanding its fleet oftrucks, trailers and vans to suit the needs of clients. Thecompany started from humble beginnings with just one

truck offering a local distribution service in the capital. Byre-investing and strategically growing the company, theowners were soon offering a more comprehensivenationwide, UK and continental service.

The fleet is predominantly Scania, with some DAF andVolvo models also included. The remainder is made up of7.5 ton rigids, vans and car vans. With a large selection of40-foot trailers, Wyse Transport can provide a completesolution.

“We would work with freight forwarders more so than thecompanies themselves, but we would mainly haulcomputer components and pharmaceutical equipment forsome of the multi-national firms. We have developed areputation for on time delivery and we ensure thatcustomer satisfaction is of the utmost priority.

“We now carry out our own maintenance work and wehave three mechanics here full time, ensuring that the fleetis kept in good condition. This has also helped cut downcosts, which has been a necessity given the rise in theprice of fuel and other overheads.

“Generally, the company is doing very well. Of course,we're always hoping to attract more business and we'vejust taken on a sales rep to hopefully drum up moreinterest. We'd like to fully capitalise on the trucks we have, rather than expanding the fleet further.”

Fully affiliated to the Irish Road Haulage Association andoffering a comprehensive road transport service to mostnational and international destinations (as well as localcollections/deliveries),Wyse Transport providesgainful employment to ateam of 31 at present andthe founders are confidentthat they can continue togo from strength tostrength. “We hope toexpand,” Ken concludes.“Even though theeconomy is struggling,we're planning to growthe business and securethe future for everybodyassociated with WyseTransport.”

Looking for a quality usedtruck or refrigerated vehicleto suit your needs? If so,

Armstrong Commercial Vehiclesis certainly worth a visit.

Founded in 1991 by VictorArmstrong and his wife Sylvia, this family-run businessspecialises in ex-PLC contractlease maintained refrigeratedtrailers as well as light, mediumand heavy duty trucks with fullservice histories. Over the pasttwo decades, the company hasestablished a tradition of value-for-money, reliability and totaldedication to customer service.

Based in Ballymoney, Co.Antrim, Armstrong CommercialVehicles attracts customers fromboth Northern Ireland and theRepublic of Ireland. Indeed, asmuch as 70 per cent of allvehicles sold by Victor aredestined for the Republic.

By keeping their overheads lowand buying inventory right,Armstrong Commercial Vehiclesare able to pass on these savingsto their customers. They standbehind all their trucks with a 30-day warranty. The companysource and sell only the bestused trucks and commercialsfrom England. They also sourceand supply vehicles to dealersand exporters, and are able tooffer competitive finance

packages.“It seems like only yesterday

that we started this business. Thepast 20 years have flown by,”says Victor, who set up thecompany next door to his familyhome.

“When someone buys a truckfrom us, they know they aregetting a top quality vehicle. Wedeal only with reputable suppliersin the UK. Because all of ourstock is ex-contract vehicles, customers know they have beenwell looked after and have a fullhistory. Anything we sell comeswith a 30-day warranty.

“The vast majority of our stock issourced from the south ofEngland where the roads are, generally speaking, in bettercondition than in any other part ofthe UK. Also the trucks from thatpart of the UK tend to be betterlooked after and are moreregularly serviced. In other words, the owners take great pride intheir vehicles.”

Armstrong Commercial Vehiclescarry a large range of the mostpopular trucks and refrigeratedvehicles, including MAN, Iveco,Mercedes and DAF. They rangein size from three-and-a-halftonne up to 26 tonne, withvehicles between seven-and-a-half tonne and 18 tonne

accounting for most of theirsales.

If you are looking for aparticular model that isn’tin stock, Victor will gladlysource it for you. If you arenot sure what you arelooking for, there is anextensive range of modelsin stock at any one time tohelp you choose the rightvehicle for your needs.Customers can also usethe company’s website,www.trucksni.co.uk, tosearch for makes, models, prices as well as theavailability of vehicles.

Victor can set you up withany kind of truck.

“We can change ourboxes, refrigerated boxes, make dump and tankerbodies and a whole lotmore,” he says.

“All the customer has todo is to tell us what theirneeds are and we will getit done for them. If acustomer is looking for aspecific vehicle we haven’tgot in stock, all they haveto do is fill out the vehicleenquiry form on ourwebsite and we will lookafter the rest.”

Victor decided to set upthe company after realisingthat many private ownerscannot afford to spend bigmoney on new trucks.

“When I was working foran Iveco-Ford dealerbefore I set up thiscompany, I noticed thatprivate owners were moreinterested in buyingsecond-hand trucks thannew trucks. It all comesdown to money and whatthey can afford at the endof the day. A typical seven-and-a-half tonne truck tobuy new would costyou £50,000. You canget a decent second-hand for £10,000.There’s nocomparison.”

He continues:“The business hasbecome a lot morecompetitive inrecent years. Youhave companiescoming overfrom EasternEurope clearingout the second-hand market and

then, of course, therecession has taken its tollas well. The South hasbeen harder hit than theNorth and, considering that70 per cent of mycustomers are from theSouth, that has had animpact on me.

“But people still have toeat, deliveries still have tobe made and as long asthat’s the case, there willbe a demand for trucks. We sell a lot of meat railvehicles and other types ofrefrigerated trucks.”

One of ArmstrongCommercial Vehicles’ bigselling points is its locationjust off the main A26 routebetween Belfast andColeraine. From here,Victor operates a largeworkshop where repairsand modifications arecarried out by mechanicPaul Scullion, who hasbeen with the company for15 years. When majormechanical problemsarise, or if paintwork isneeded, Victor contractsout this work.

Victor is very appreciateof the support he receivesfrom all his customers.

“While a favourableexchange rate can offercustomers from south ofthe border better value formoney when they arebuying a truck, it’s stillincredible to think that theymake up 70 per cent of ourbusiness. We get a lot ofcustomers from Donegaland the West of Ireland inparticular. Regardless ofthe make or model, thebottom line is that ourcustomers are alwaysassured of a top qualityused truck when the visitus,” he concludes.
