THE Wyvern Combination League season concluded with the John Stimpson Memorial Cup Final between the second strings of Fawley AFC and Poole Town at Clayfields.

The game was won by the Oilers by the narrowest of margins. It was settled in the 37th minute of an interesting first half. Pete Southwick’s attempted shot was blocked and he alertly collected the loose ball and chipped it across to Tom Munday who just got his head to the ball before Town keeper Ben Rolleston’s challenge and divert it home. Earlier in the game, Shaquille Unaka attempted a lobbed snap shot from outside the box that went just past Rolleston’s near post. Later there was an audacious effort by Fawley’s Billy Lawrence, who from his own half, punted the ball forward. The bounce caught out Rolleston and it went over him and perilously towards the unguarded net but the Poole keeper scampered back to palm it around the post at the last gasp. Rolleston was again on his toes to tip round from a dangerous ball into the box by Matt Spencer. Despite those opportunities for Fawley, it was Poole who were playing a fine passing game but they failed to turn this into a goal threat. That was the case until added time when Ryan Mitchell headed over after a Poole corner had been partially cleared.

Half-time: 1-0 to Fawley AFC

Ryan Mitchell tried a distant effort from wide on the left that went just past the far post as Poole began the half on the front foot. When Fawley stopper Jon Page rushed out of his box the ball came out to Sam Herrington and his attempted lob went just past the post. Southwick tried a similar effort for Fawley from a wider and more distant position but Rolleston was able to deal with it. Keepers were again in action at both ends as Page kept out a Mitchell effort and Rolleston saved well to deny a firm Munday shot. Fawley had a good spell when Southwick’s effort was deflected for a corner and a fine move, starting in defence and involving Tom Walker, Southwick and Elliott Brown, produced a chance for Munday who dragged his effort wide. Play swiftly moved to the other end where Tyrrell Sampson for the Dolphins struck a shot from wide on the right that came off the inside of the far post – so close! A Herrington corner for Poole saw Charlie Turner get in a header but at Page whilst Turner had a further chance but drove wide. Fawley got forward and Lewis Bailey’s effort was pushed out by Rolleston. Late on, Poole hit the woodwork again as Herrington’s free-kick was pushed onto the bar by Page.

Full-time: 1-0.

The hardworking Mike McLeod was adjudged to be man of-the-match for the winning side and well deserved too before Fawley AFC were presented with the Shield.

Well done both sides who provided a decent match and a final mention should go to Hythe & Dibden FC who again proved to be a most splendid host for a Wyvern final.

Thanks to Gary Day for the report
