Fire Fighting Sectional Committee, BDC 22

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 20 June 1989, after thedraft finalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil EngineeringDivision Council.

Portable pr mp set is cne of the essential equipments for fire fighting. In view of its lighter weightand porta bility, it can be carried almost anywhere. It is specially used in small factories, railways,dockyards/areas where there are narrow Janes, rural areas and towns where water is scarce.

Based on the indigenous development so far, an Indian Standard covering the capacity up to 275I/min was formulate ( see IS 942 : 1982 'Functional requirements for 275 l/rnin portable pump setfor fire fighting ( second revision )'. However, this capacity was not found sufficient for fightingbig fires and based on knowhow available in other countries, it has been possible to develop highercapacity of portable pump sets which are covered in this standard.

For tbe purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be roundedoff in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised )'. Thenumber of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the

specified value in this standard.

Indirectcooling system, if provided, shall be of theclosed circuit type filled with adequate capacityheat exchanger to prevent overheating and tomaintain engine temperature in range recommended for the engine. The heat exchangers~all in~orporate.copper coils and shall be provided with a drain plug to ensure drainage ofcooling water.

5.3 The engine fuel tank shall have the capacityto allow running of pump for minimum onehour continuously at the rated output. It shallbe provided with an opening of size 35 rom indiameter (minimum) located at a suitableposition for easy refilling and checking thecontents.

5.4 The engine exhaust shall be so arranged asto discharge on the opposite side of pumpsuction/operating side.

5.5 Pump

5.5.1 The pump shall be single stage centrifugaltype directly mounted to the engine and drivenpreferably through a flexible coupling. Thepump shall be designed to have easy access tothe impeller with the outer face carrying suction!delivery, priming device, etc. The shaft shall besupported on antifriction bearing external tothe casing. Pump shall be fitted with a selfadjusting mechanical seal which consists of acarbon ring running on stainless steel face. Adrain plug shall be provided at the bottom ofthe pump casing/volute. The pump suction shallhave round threads (see IS 902; 1974). Thedelivery shall be fitted with two numbers ofinstantaneous couplings (see IS 902: 1974 )with screwdown valves. The pump suction anddelivery outlets shall be provided with blankcaps.

5.5.2 The impeller shall be dynamically balanced and the pump shall be hydraulically testedto a pressure of 16'5 kgfjcm? for a period of 2minutes.

5.5.3 The pump shall be tested for its performance duties with only internal and suctionstrainer fitted at suction lift of 3 m.
