FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on 8 September 1989 after the draft finalized by the Cinematographic Equipment Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.

While preparing this standard assistance has been derived from the following:

i) IS0 8590-1985 Cinematography - Audio Records on 35 mm and 70 mm motion-picture release prints with magnetic stripes - recorded characteristics

ii) ANSI PH22 -208M-1984 Motion-picture film ( 35 mm ) - recorded characteristic - magnetic audio records issued by American National Standard Institute ( USA ).

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised )‘. The number of signi- ficant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

CINEMATOGRAPHY - RECORDED CHARACTERISTICS OF MAGNETIC SOUND

RECORD ON 35 mm MOTION-PICTURE MAGNETIC FILM - SPECIFICATION

1 SCOPE

1.1 This standard specifies, for studio use, the recorded characteristics of magnetic audio records on 35 mm motion-picture magnetic film when reproduced at the nominal speed of 24 frames ( 457 mm > per second.

2 RECORDED CHARACTERISTLC

2.1 With a constant amplitude sine-wave applied to the input of the recording system, the relative characteristic in effective values of the short-circuit magnetic flux versus frequency shall decrease with increasing frequency proportionately to the imoedance of a combination of capacitance and resistance having time constants of T = 35 ps and 3 180 ps ( see the note ). The characteristic t;Fiiuda above is obtained by the following

The corresponding reproducing characteristic is that which gives a flat response when reproducing a sound track recorded with the relative short- circuit flux level defined above.

3 TOLERANCES

3.1 Magnetic audio records shall be recorded to the characteristic specified in 2 within the tole- rances given in Table 1.

where

Lv# is the recorded relative magnetic flux level, in decibels;

f is the frequency, in hertz;

-rl is the time constant of 3 180 ps;

oh is the time constant of 35 ps; and

C, is a constant calculated to make L+ = 0 at the reference frequency of I 000 Hz.

The approximate numerical values are given in the table, with the values of the recorded magnetic characteristic normalized to 1 000 Hz.

Standard Mark

The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the But-em of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with the requirements of that standard under a well defined system of inspection, testing and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a licence for the use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
