FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by theTobacco and Tobacco Products Sectional Committee had been approvedby the Food and AgricultureDivision Council.

Hookah tobacco paste is an admixture of tobacco, molasses, fruit pulps,spices, flavours, etc. The broadobjective of this standard is not only to enable the Indianconsumer to get a product of assuredqualitybut also to help In promotingexportof this product:

For the purposeof deciding whethera particularrequirementof this standard is compliedwith, the finalvalue,observed or calculated, expressing the resultofa testor analysis, shallbe roundedoffin accordancewith IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised)'. The number of significant placesretained in the rounded-offvalueshould be the sameas that of the specified value in this standard.

mitted under the Prevention of Food AdulterationThis standard prescribes the requirements, Act, 1954 and the Rules framed thereunder.methods of test and sampling of hookah tobaccopaste. 3.2 The material shall also comply with the

3 REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Description

The material shall be in the form of semi-solidpaste, made from native air-cured tobacco

4 PACKING AND MARKING

4.1 Packllll

The materialshall be packed in tinplatecontainerssuitably and properly lacquered from inside withfood grade lacquering material. The capacity of acontainer may either be 1 kg or 4 kg or 16 kg,depending upon the agreement between the pur­chaser and the vendor. Each container then shallbe packed in 5 to 7 ply corrugated fibreboard boxwhich then be wrapped witb hessian cloth.

4.2 Marklnl

The following particulars shall be legibly markedon eachcontainer:

a) Nameof the material;b) Nameand addressof the manufacturer;c) Date of packing;d) Batchor code number;e) Net mass of the contents; andf) Any other markings required under the

A-l.2 Precautions shall be taken to draw thesamples so as to protect the sample, the materialbeingsampledand the receptaclesfor samplesfromlossor gain of moisture and from adventitious con­tamination.

A-I.I In drawing,preparing, storing and handlingsamples, the precautions and directions shall beobserved.

Each container in the sample shall be selected atrandom from the lot. For this purpose, reference

A-2 SCALE OF SAMPLING

A-2.i Lot

All the bulk containers of Hookah tobacco pastemanufactured under similar conditions of produc­tion shall be grouped together to constitute a lot.

A-l.l.l NumberofSamples

For ascertainingconformityof the materials in a lotto the requirements of this Specification, tests shallbecarried out on each lot separately. The numberof containers to be selected from the lot shalldepend upon the size of the lot and shall be inaccordancewith Table 2.

From each of the container selected, a small butequal quantity of the material (approximately 300g) shall be taken out and mixed thoroughly to forma composite test sample. The composite testsample thus formedshall bedividedinto three partsand transferred immediatelyto cleanand dryrecep­taclesand ~ ~aled air-tight. One of these receptaclesshall be marked for the purchaser, another for thesupplier and the third as a referee.

A-J.2 Individual Sample

The remaining portion of the material from eachcontainer shall be divided into three parts and eachsuch part shall be transferred to separate clean anddry receptacles whichare then sealed air-tight withstoppers and labelled with full identification par­ticulars of the sample as given in A-i.3. Thematerial in each such receptacle shall constitute anindividual test sample. These individual testsamples shall be grouped into three sets in such away that every set has a test sample representingeach container selected. One of these three setsshall be marked for the purchaser, another for thesupplier and the third as a referee.

A-S.2.1 In respect of each characteristic tested onthe compositesample, the lot shall be declared asconforming to the requirements of the specifica­tion if the test results on the composite samplesatisfy the correspondingrequirements.

A·S.2 Composite Sample

A-S.l.2 The lot shall be considered as complyingwith the requiremenISof thesecharacteristics,if thecriteria given in Table 3 are met.

A·3.3 Referee Sample

Referee sampleshall consistof the compositetestsampleand a set of individual test samples markedfor this purpose and shall bear the seals of thepurchaserand supplierand be usedin the caseof adispute between the two.

A-4 NUMBER OF TESTS

A-4.1 Testsfordetermination of losson heating[51No. (i) of Table 1]and nicotinecontent [SI No. (ii)of Table 1] shall be conducted on each of theindividual samples.A-4.2 Tests for determination of the remainingcharacteristlcsshallbe conductedon the compositesample.

A-5 CRITERIA FOR CONFORMI1Y

A-S.1 Individual Sample

A-S.1.l From test results for each characteristictested on individual samples, the average (X) and A-S.3 The lot shall be declared as conforming torange (R) (if sample size is less than 10)or average the requirements of the specification if A-S.1 andrange (R) (if sample is greater than or equal to 10), A-S.2are satisfiedshall then be calculatedfrom test results.
