FOREWORD

This Indian Standard was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by the Tobacco andTobacco Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Food and Agriculture Division Council.

Quiwam is a product in paste form similar to chewing tobacco, containing tobacco extract, spices and other foodgrade additives. The objective of this standard is to enable the Indian consumer to get a product of assuredquality and help in promoting export of this product.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value,observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960'Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised)'. The number of significant places retained in the roundedoff value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

The following Indian Standards contain provisionswhich through reference in this text, constituteprovision of this standard. At the time of publication,the editions indicated were valid. 3.1 Description

The material shall be in the form of paste, made fromtobacco extract, spices menthol andother additives aspermitted under the Prevention of Food AdulterationAct, 1954 and the Rules framed thereunder.

3.2 Silver Leaf

Silver leaf when used shall conform to IS 3110.

3.3 Additives

Any substances, if added, shall beof nature and puritywhich aresuitable for use as food additives as permittedunder the Prevention of Food Adulteration Rules.1955.

3.4 The material shall also comply with therequirements given in Table 1.

4.2 Marking

The following particulars shall be legibly marked oneach container:

a) Name of the material;

b) Name and address of the manufacturer;

c) Date of packing;

d) Batch or Code number;

e) Net mass of the content; and

f) Any other markings required under the Stand­ards of Weights and Measures (PackagedCommodities) Rules, 1977.

4.1 Packing

The material shall be packed in glass or tinplate

Representative samples shall be drawn and conformityof the material in the lot to the requirements of thisspecification shall be determined in accordance withthe procedure given in Annex A.

SAMPLING OF QUIWAM .

A-2.1 Lot

A-2 SCALE OF SAMPLING

A-I GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OFSAMPLING

A-I.! In 'drawing, preparing, storing and handlingsamples, the following precautions and directions shallbe observed.

A-l.2 Precautions shall be taken to draw the samplesso as to protect the sample, the material being sampledand the receptacles for samples from loss or gain ofmoisture and from adventitious contamination.

All the bulk containers ofQuiwam manufactured undersimiliar conditions of production shall be groupedtogether to constitute a lot.

A-2.1.1 Number ofSamples

For ascertaining conformityof the materials in a lot tothe requirements of this specification, tests shall becarried out on each lot separately. The number ofcontainers to beselected from the lot shall dependuponthe size of the lot and shall be in accordance withTable 2.

A-3.3 Referee Sample

Referee sample shall consist of the composite testsample and a set of inividual test samples markedforthis purpose and shall bear the seals of the purchaserand the supplier and shall be used in the case of adispute between the two.

A-4 NUMBER OF TESTS

A-3 PREPARATION OF TEST SAMPLES ANDREFEREE SAMPLE

A-4.1 Tests for determination of loss on heating[SI No. (i) of Table 1] and nicotine content [51 No. (ii)of Table 1] shall beconducted on each of the individualsamples.

A-4.2 Tests for determination of the remainingcharacteristics shall be conducted on the compositesample.

A-5 CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

A-3.2 Individual Sample

The remaining portion of the material from eachcontainer shall be divided into three parts and eachsuch part shall be transferred to separate clean and dryreceptacles which are then sealed air-tight with stoppersand labelled with full identification particulars of thesample as given in A-l.3. The material in each suchreceptacle shall constitute an individual test sample.These individual test samples shall be grouped intothree sets in such a way that every set has a test samplerepresenting ~ach container selected. One of thesethree sets shall be marked for the purchaser, anotherfor the supplier and the third as a referee sample.

A-3.t Composite Sample

From each of the container selected, a small but equalquantity of the material (approximately 300 g) shallbe taken out and mixed thoroughly to form a compositetest sample. The composite test sample thus formedshall be di vided into three parts and transferredimmediately to clean and dry receptacles and sealedair-tight. One of these receptacles shall be marked forthe purchaser, another for the supplier and the third asa referee sample.

A-l.3 The samples shall be placed in clean and dryreceptacles. The receptacles shall be sealed air-tightafter filling and marked with full details of sampling,date of packing, name and address of the manufacturerand other important particulars of the consignment.

A-l.4 Samples shall be stored in such a manner thatthe conditions of storage do not unduly affect thequality of the material.

A-l.S Sampling shall be done by a person agreed tobetween the purchaser and the vendor and in thepresence of the purchaser (or his representative) andthe vendor (or his representative).
