FOREWORD
Ihis Indian Standard (Part 2) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by theSilk and Silk Products Sectional Committee had been approved by the Textile Divis ion Council.
Grading of dupion silk is very important from the viewpoint of quality of the dupion silk and the subsequentproducts made from it. This will also help the farmers to get the right value of their product and removemalpractices in the dupion silk trade. For raw silk, BIS has already published IS 15090 (Parts I to II) ' Rawsilk- Grading and methods of tests'.
This standard is published in live parts. The other parts in the series are:
Part I GradingPart 3 Determination of special defectsPart 4 Conducting winding testPart 5 Determination of average size and size uniformity range
This standard prescribes a method to inspect visually the uniformity, general finish and characteristic natureof dupion raw silk .
The composit ion of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is g iven in Annex B.
For the purpo se ofdeciding whether a particular requirement ofthis standard is complied with, the final value.observed or calculated expressing the result of a test or analysis. shall be rounded off in accordance withIS 2 : J960 ' Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised) '. The number of significant places retained inthe rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard .

2 REFERENCES
This standard (Part 2) prescr ibes a method to inspectvisually the uniformity. general finish andcharacteristic nature of dupion raw silk.
For the purpose of this standard the definit ionsgiven in IS 15825 (Part I) and SP 45 shall apply.
4 APPARATUS
The visual inspection shall be conducted in a'Standard Visual Inspection Room' with a windowdirectly facing north which enables the inspector toutilize the natural light free from reflection of anysurrounding object, or a standard lighting equipmentwhich emits light closely near in its spectral energydistribution to that of the natural daylight.
The general finish of the lot shall be inspected forthe presence and degree of the defects listed below:
6.1 Uniformity
The uniformit) of the lot shall be inspected withrespect to colour . lusture and hand.
6.1.1 The uniformity of the lot shall be indicated asgood . fair or poor.
6.2 General Finish
a) Hard gum spots;
b) Gummed skeins;
c) Improper reel ends:
d) Improper skein lacing:
e) Irregular traverse;
f) Double or irregular skeins ;
g) Improper making of books ;
h) Cut ends;
j) Bad smell;
k) Insect eaten thread ; and
m) Soiled thread , etc.
6.2.1 The general finish ofa lot shall be indicated asgood, fair or poor. Presence of abnormal defects shallbe mentioned in the report.
6.3 Colour
The lot shall be inspected for depth of colour andthe same shall be recorded as light, medium. deep orvery deep.
