Indian StandardSPECIFICATION FOR

FISH MEAL AS LIVESTOCKFEED INCiREDJENT

( Second Revision)

o. FOR E W 0 R 0

0.1 This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 30 December 1983, after the draft finalized by theFish and Fisheries Products Sectional Committee had been approved bythe Agricultural and Food Products Division Council.

0.2 The increasing awareness of the importance of adopting scientificmethods in livestock management in India has promoted the developmentof better feeds. The incorporation of fish meal in feeds. especially poultryfeeds, has now become a regular practice, Fish meal is a rich source ofhigh quality protein and contains, besides calcium and phosphorus, certaingrowth factors which are necessary for maximum growth rate and hatchability in poultry. Since fish meal now available shows wide variations inits important constituents, it is felt that the formulation of this IndianStandard would help in promoting the manufacture and use of fish meal ofa uniform quality so that it may be increasingly used by producers oflivestock feeds.

0.3 Fish meal suitable for use as livestock feed ingredient is made either bywashing, cooking, pressing, drying and pulverizing non-fatty or fatty freshfish or fish waste. It may also be prepared by heat treating non-fatty,unsalted dry fish to such an extent as would ensure destruction of harmfulmicro-organisms, followed by pulverizing.

0.4 This standard was first published in 1967. It was revised in 1975 toincorporate additional requirement and method of test for chloride contentand to include revised methods of tests for crude protein, crude fat andacid-insoluble ash achieving correct analytical results. In this revision, titleof the standard has been revised and crude fat requirement modified.

0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated" expressing

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes requirements and methods of sampling andtest for fish meal to he used as livestock feed ingredient.

2.1 The fish meal shall he of two grades, namely, Grade 1 and Grade 2( see Table I ).

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 Raw Material- Fish meal shall be obtained from fresh fish and/or fishwastes or from unsalted dried fish or all of them, eliminating poisonousfishes.

A-3.t Preparation of Sample for ..Salmonella Assessment -- Draw with asterile corer or any other appropriate sterile sampling instrument equalquantities of the material from three different parts of each bag selectedaccording to Table 2. The total quantity of material drawn from each bagshall be not less than 500 g. "I ransfer the samples to a sterile samplecontainer. The composite sample so obtained shall be thoroughly mixedunder sterile conditions and filled in a sterile sample container. The samplecontainer shall be labelled with the particulars given in A-l.5.

A-3.2 Preparation of Sample for Other Tests -- After removing samplesfor Salmonella assessment, thoroughly mix the contents of each of theselected bags ( see Table 2) separately and remove approximately a quarterof the contents by the quartering method. Mix together the quarters soremoved from all the selected bags and subdivide the quantity by quartering further so as to obtain two different samples of approximately ] kgeach of the material as composite sample. One of the two composite sampleshall be transferred immediately to a sample container and sealed air..tight.The sample container shall be labelled with the information particularsgiven in A-I.S. Comminute the other composite sample to such fineness aswill pass through 425-micron IS Sieve taking care against loss of moisture.Mix the comminuted sample thoroughly and transfer it immediately to adry and clean sample container. Label the sample container with theinformation given in A-I.5. Take appropriate quantity of this comminutedsample for the various tests in Table).

A-4. CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY

A-4.1 The test results on the non-comminuted composite sample for variouscharacteristics shall meet the requirements prescribed in 3.3.1 to 3.3.3.

A-4.1 The test results on the comminuted sample for various characteristics shall meet the requirements prescribed in 3.3.4.

A-4.3 The test results on the sample drawn under A-3.J for Salmonellaorganisms shall meet the requirements prescribed in 3.3.5.
