FOREWORDThis Indian Standard ( Third Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, afterthe draft finalized' by the Fire Fighting S(ctional Committee had been approved by the CivilEngineering Division CounciL 'Hydrants are invariably used for fire fighting p'J.rp')ses to derive water from the water line. Thehydrants could be stand-post type or underground, that is, sluic,e-valve type. This standardcovering underground fire hydrants, sl uice-valve type was first published in 1958 and revised in1965. The second revision has been prepared to incorporate complete details of duck-footbend besides making other contents up to date.In the formulation of this standard, due weightage has been given to international co-ordinationamong the standards and practices prevailing in different countries in addition to relating itto the practices in the field in this country.In the present revision of the standard, in addition to general updating, the following majorchanges have been introduced:

a) A detailed figure of Underground Fire Hydrant Valve' including an 'item Jist' of components g ~ v i n g their details has been included.b) 'Valve seat tightness test' has also been included under performance requirements.

Por the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirment of this standard iscomplied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a testor analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2: 1960 'Rules for rounding offnumerical values ( revised)'. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off valueshould be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

4.3 Spindle s/hall be made of brass conformingto IS 320: 1980 or IS 319 : 1974 or stainlesssteel Gr 04 Cr 18 Ni 10 conforming to IS 6603 :1972.

4.4 Gaskets shall be made of rubber conformingto IS 937 : 1981 or IS 638: 1965 or leatherconforming to IS 581: 1976 or compressedasbestos fibre conforming to IS 2712 : 1979.4.5 Gland packing shall be of asbestos threadconforming to IS 4687 : 1980.4.6 Bolts an d nuts shall be made of carbonsteel confo rming to IS 1367 ( Part 14 ) : 1984.5 ROAD SURFACE BOXThe road surface box shall be made accord ingto the details given in Pig. 2. Th e minimumweight of th e surface box shall be 135 kg . Whena second sluice-valve is provided surface bo xfl)r this sluice-valve shall conform to IS 3950 :1979.6 CONSTRUCTION AN D DIMENSIONSThe outlet of th e hydrant shall be of screwedtype and provided wi th external round thread( two threads per 254 em ) as shown in Pi g .3.I t shall be attached to the flanged en d of thepipe by means of bolts.
