Gas Cylinders Sectional Committee, ME 16

FOREWORD

This Indian Standard (First Revision) was adopted by Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalized by theGas Cylinders Sectional Committee had been approved by the Mechanical Engineering Division Council.

In this standard, changes have been incorporated in the light of the experience gained by the industry and consumersover the years. The requirement of limits on taper of both internal and external threads provided in the standardfor the NGT threads AN SI/CSA/ STANDARD V-1-1987 ‘Compressed gas cylinder valve outlet and inletconnection’ issued by the American National Standard Institute and Compressed Gas Association, Inc., thisbeing the standard forming the basis of these threads. Relevant portions of the specification of the threads havebeen reproduced in this revision. With this requirement to inspect the taper of the threads, the method ofchecking relative engagement of the product threads in the threaded and plain taper ring and plug gauges hasbeen included in this revision.

The composition of the Committee responsible for formulation of this standard is given in Annex B.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is compiled with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in a accordance withIS 2: 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values (revise@’. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

GAS CYLINDER VALVES, TAPER 1 IN 16 —SPECIFICATION

(First Revision)

1 SCOPE

This standard prescribes dimensions, tolerancesand material requirement of inspection gaugesrecommended for checking the taper threads on thevalve stems and the taper threads on the cylinder necksof compressed gas cylinders — the threads conformingto Type 1 (size 2) covered in IS 3224 and Type 1covered in IS 8737.

4 DIMENSIONS OF THREADS ON VALVESTEMS AND IN CYLINDER NECKS

4.1 Basic Thread Form (see Fig. 1)

4.2 Principal Dimensions (see Fig. 2)

4.3 Limits on Crest and Root Truncations (seeFig. 3)

4.4 Limits on Size

Final inspection limits on size (pitch diameter) of bothexternal and internal threads are * 1 turn from basicalthough the preferred working limits are * %turn frombasic.

4.5 Limits on Taper

If there is an unintentional difference in taper atthe pitch elements of the valve and of the cylinderthreads, it is preferred to have greater tightness atthe bottom of the valve. The limits in gauging shallbe:

a) Taper on pitch elements of external threadsshall be 1 in 16 on diameter, with a minustolerance of one turn, but no plus tolerance ingauging.

b) Taper on pitch elements of internal threadsshall be 1 in 16 on diameter, with a plustolerance of one turn, but no minus tolerance ingauging.

4.6 The tolerance on 60° angle of threads shall bei 2“.

4.7 The maximum taper on pitch line per millimetreshall be 0.0729 and the minimum 0.0573.

ANNEX A

(Clause 8)USAGE OF GAUGES

A-O Special gauges are required forthe gauging ofthese threads because of their length and the rigidrequirement for sealing the compressed gas againstleakage.

A-1 PITCH DIAMETER OF EXTERNALTHREAD

To check the size of the external thread for pitchdiameter, the thread ring gauge D is used. This gaugeD (also known as 1., ring gauge) is the primary gaugebecause the reading taken on this gauge will be neededfor use when additional gauging is done.

A-1.1 The gauge E (also known as L8 ring gauge) isused to check the taper of the external threads. It isscrewed onto the valve stem thread and its engagementrelative to that of the L, ring read at A-1 is noted.

A-2 CREST TRUNCATION OF EXTERNALTHREAD

To check the crest truncation of the external thread, theplain taper ring gauge F (also known as truncationgauge) is used. This gauge is placed over the taperthread and the engagement relative to that of L] ringat A-1 is checked.

A-3 Gauging of the thread with the three ring gaugesas stated above is illustrated hereunder with referenceto Fig. 13:

a)

b)

c)

To set the L, and L8 taper screw ring gauges(gauges D and E respectively), use master taperthread plug gauge M-EXT (see Fig. 11) screwedinto the rings and set the reading on the dialindicator at zero with the plunger tip on theindicator resting against small end (referenceface) of the master taper thread plug ensuringthat the whole millimetre readings on the smalldials is also equal on both the dials.

To set the plain taper truncation ring (gauge F),insert the setting distance piece (see Fig. 12)into the gauge with the face X of the settingplug pressed against the large end face of thetruncation ring. Set the plunger tip of the dialindicator against the face Yof the setting plugand adjust the dial at zero ensuring that the wholemillimeter readings on the small dial is identicalto that on the small dials of the two gauges asgiven in A-3 (a).

Screw the valve stem in taper thread ring gaugeD and note the reading on the dial indicator. The reading should be zero (as set on the dialindicator) *1 .814 mm for the purpose ofacceptability of the thread size. Note this reading

as R(EXVL1.

d)

e)

Screw the valve stem into gauge E. The readingon the dial indicator should be Rf~x~)Ll+1.814

for the purpose of acceptability o~”therequirement of relative engagement (see 4.5).

Place the valve stem into plain ta~er ringgauge F. The reading on the dial ;ndicato~

should be R(~x~)L1+2.60 for the purpose of

acceptability of the cr-% truncation of the thread.

A-4 PITCH DIAMETER OF INTERNAL”THREAD

To check the size of the internal thread for pitchdiameter, the thread plug gauge A is used. This gaugeA (also known as L] plug gauge) is the primary gaugebecause the reading taken on this gauge will be neededfor use when additional gauging is done.

A-4.1 The gauge B (also known as L~ plug gauge) isused to check the engagement relative to that with L,plug gauge.

A-5 CREST TRUNCATION OF INTERNALTHREAD

To check the crest truncation of the internal thread, the plain taper plug gauge C (also known as truncationgauge) is used. This gauge is placed into the internaltaper thread and the engagement relative to that withf.] plug is checked.

A-6 The gauging of the internal thread with the threegauges as stated above is illustrated hereunder withreference to Fig. 13:

a) Using the master taper screw ring shown inFig. 10 and the plunger tips of the respectivedial indicators resting against the face of themaster ring, set the readings on all the dialindicators at zero ehsuring that the wholemillimetre readings on the small dials is alsoequal on all the three dials.

b) Screw the taper threa&plug gauge A into theinternal thread to be gauged and note the readingon the dial indicator. The reading-should be* 1.814 mm for the purpose of acceptabili~ ofthe thread size. Note this reading as ~ L1.

c) Screw the taper thread plug gauge B into theinternal thread being gauged. The reading onthe dial indicator should be ~~*NT)Ll_~.814mm

for the purpose of acceptability of meeting therequirement of relative engagement (see 4.5).

d) Now place the plain plug gauge C into theinternal thread to be gauged. The reading onthe dial indicator should be R(lW~l+Z.co for

the purpose of acceptability of fle cresttruncation of the thread.
