METHOD FOR THE DETEkbiINATION OF THERMAL CONDUCTlVlTY OF THERMAL

INSULATION MATERIALS (TWO SLAB, GUARDEb HOT-PLATE METHOD )

0.1 This Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 15 May 1980, after the d r a h finalized by the Thermal Insulation Materials Sectional Committee had been approved by the Chemical Ucvision Council.

0.2 O n e of the important properties of a thermal insulation material from the performance point of vteiv is its thermal conductivity. Numerous methods of determining this property have been used and very often, the results obtained by different methods are not the same. T h e method, which has been recognized by sctentists and engineers in moft o f the countries as the rnost dependable and reproducible, is the one known as the 'two-slab, guarded hot-plate method'. I t is suitable for malerials which can be laid l l ~ t between two arallel plates a n d can be adapted for loose- fill materials which can be 81 i' ed between such plates.

0.3 Since much of the detatls o f t h e apparatusand procedutes will depend o n the available resources a n d scientific background of the operators, it is possible for a standard ltke this to lay down only tlie general design principles of apparatus, methods for checking its performance and essen- tial precautions and procedures whlch have been found in practice to yield reproducible and correct results. T h e ultimatc objective of this standard is to obtain the value of thcrmal conductivity accurate to within 3 5 percent.

0.4 This standard was first poblirhrd in 1966, deriving assistante from ASTM C 177-1945 and ASTM C 177-1963 'Test for thermal conductivity of materials hy means of the guarded hot plate' issued by the Anietican Society for Testing a n d Materials. Further, the earlier version of this
