Light Metals and Their Alloys Sectional Committee, MTD 7
FOREWORD
This Indian Standard Fourth Revision) was adopted hy the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the draft finalizedhy the Light Metals and TheirAlloys Sectional Committee had been approved by the Metallurgical Engineering
Division Council.
This standard was first puhlished in 1956 and revised in 1965, 1974 and 1986. While reviewing this standard, inthe light of experience gained during these years, the Committee decided to revise it to bring in line with thepresent practices being followed by the Indian industry.
In the present revision following modifications have been made:
a) Ten new Grades 19 2 2453 26388 312 3 1500B, 52300, 52300B, 65028, 74538 and 76528 havebeen added.
b A new clause on references has been incorporated.
c) Temper designations have been modified.d A comparison IS and ISO des ignations has been given in Annex A for information for mee ting
domestic and export requirements.
Characteristics and typical uses various alloys have been given in Annex B for information.
The composition of the Committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in Annex C.
Fur the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a testor analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values revised) . The number of significant places retained in the rounded offvalue should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

7.2 Bend Test f or Maler ial2 .6 mm an d Thinner
Unless otherwise stated, the bend test piece shall benot less than 15 mm wide, of convenient length. andcut with its longer axis transverse to the direction ofroll ing. The longer edges shall be carefully roundedand smoothened longitudinally so thai the cross-sectionof the test piece has approximately semi-circular ends.
7.2.1 The test piece may be bent by hand to aU-form,and the p ie ce t hus obt ained shall subsequently beclosed in a vice until the inner surfaces of the test pieceare twice the specified radius apart or are in generalcontact , if the test piece is to be closed flat .
7.2.2 When tested in accordance with 7.2.1, the outersurface of the bend shall not show any visible crack see IS 1599 .
8 CONDITION
The ma te rial shall be supplied in the con ditio n asspecified by the purchaser. while specifying thecondi tion , the temper des ignation as laid down inIS 5052 shall be followed.
9 DIMENSIONS AN D TOLERANCES
Th e dimensions and tolerances of sheet and strip shallbe as given in IS 2676.
10 SELECTION OF TEST SAMPLES
10.1 Sheet a nd S tr ip of Aluminium or Non-heatTreatableAluminium Alloy
Material of the same thickness, produced in the same
way, and of the same nominal composition shall beg ro up ed into bat ches of not more than 4 00 0 kg.However, if a shee t or strip in a s ingle coil exceeds4 000 kg in weight, it shall be deemed to represent onebatch.
10.1.1 Mechanical tests shall be carried ont on eachbatch for determining conformity of the material tothis standard.
10.1.2 Before the test samples are cut off, they shallbe marked to identify them with the batch theyrepresent. Th e test sample shall be taken from thematerial as supplied and shall not be further annealed
or mechanically worked. Th e test samples may be cutand prepared from the margins of the material beforecutting it to size.
10.2 Sheet an d Strip of Heat-Treatable AluminiumAlloys
One test sample shall be cu t from a sheet or stripselected from each heat treatment batch. Before thetest samples arc cut off, they shall be marked toidentifywith the heat treatment batch they represent.
2
10.2.1 Unless otherwise agreed, the test samples shallbe tes ted in the 0, T4 or T6 conditions that is in thesame condition in which the material is to be supplied .Th e test sample, a fter heat treatment, shall no t bemechanically worked before being tested.
10.2.2 Material in the condition, when heat-treated,may have properties of the order of 15 MP a less than
the specified properties for the T4 or T6 conditions asappropriate.
10.2 .2 .1 Unless o therwise agreed , the tests shall becarried ou t e ither in T4 or in T6 condition. The tests am pl es s ha ll no t be fur ther h eat -trealed o rmechanically worked except for making the test piecebefore being tested. The test samples may be cu t fromthe margins of the material before cutting it to size.
l IRETESTS
11.1 If a les t does not give the speci fied result s, twoadditional samples from the same ba tc h sh all be
selected for testing, one of which shall be from thesheet or strip from which the original test sample wastaken, unless that sheet or strip has been withdrawn byth e supplier. B ot h r et es ts s ha ll conform to therequirements of this standard, otherwise, the lot shallbe rejected.
11.2 Unless otherwise agreed, the supplier shall havethe discre t ion to r e-heat t re at t he mater ia l heattreatable alloys , not exceeding 2 re-heat treatments, before the two further samples are selected.
11.2.1 If a test does not give the specified results, twoadditional samples from th e sam e b atc h shall be
selected for testing. Both retests shall conform to therequirements of this standard, otherwise, t lot shallbe rejected.
12 MARKING
12.1 Each package/coil of sheet s and strip s may besuitably marked for identif icat ion, with the name ofthe manufacturer, grade, condition of the material andbatch number. The supplier shall furnish a certificatethat th e m at er ia l s up pl ie d c om pl ie s with therequirements of this standard.
12.1.1 BIS Certification Marking
The material may also be marked with the StandardMark.
12.1.1.1 Th e use of the Standard Mark is governed bythe provision of the Bureau Indian Standards Act1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The detai ls of the conditions under which the licencefor the use of the Standard Mark may be granted tomanufacturers or producers may be obtained from theBureau of Indian Standards.
