COUNCIL OPS FOR

eco-friendly at Lake ElphinstoneA new eco-friendly amenities block is now complete at Central Queensland’s camping and water sport destination, Lake Elphinstone. With a growing popularity of overnight and day visitors, local Isaac Region Councillor Dale Appleton said it was good for visitors, the environment and the hip pocket. “The Lake attracts up to 70 campervans plus day visitors so it’s important amenities can meet these demands,” he said. “We’ve installed a large eco-sustainable septic system and built a bigger facility to cater for

higher numbers, disabled access, young families and improve shower facilities.“The new eco-friendly design is a cost effective solution for maintenance and protects the surrounding environment,” Cr Appleton said. Lake Elphinstone is a wetlands of significance, located approximately 24km from Glenden and 92km west of Mackay. The natural lake is a popular destination for water sports and tourists in the Isaac region with free onsite camping.

From the

Mayor’s DeskAs a council we will continue to work hard to represent the community to ensure Isaac remains a great place to live, not only for us today, but more importantly, into the future.

In January this year we recognised and honoured amazing people throughout our region for their dedication to serving our communities, organisations or clubs, sport, or a community event, with our Australia Day awards.

In a very different situation, our coastal communities were threatened by category 5 Tropical Cyclone Marcia last month. While the region was spared, the community experienced the same fears, took the same steps to prepare and went without power for six days.

Throughout the ordeal Council staff, local businesses and organisations and our coastal residents worked together tirelessly to ensure the safety of everyone. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your contribution to the successful response and recovery.

Council strongly welcomes Labor’s review of the conditions that allow for 100 per cent FIFO workforces. Queensland’s new mining minister Anthony Lynham confirmed the review would encompass existing mines, ensure the practice is not adopted for new mines and will take place as soon as possible.

This review can’t happen fast enough, there needs to be genuine employment opportunities for people living in established resource communities and regional centres.

In our neighbourhood“The year has started with a flurry of activity and achievements in Middlemount. A great crowd enjoyed Middlemount’s Australia Day event, the MCSA had a great response to their inaugral Sport & Recreation Expo, The International Women’s Day “Ladies Night Out in the Mount”, the Tennis Fun Day and the “Shorty” Moffat Memorial Game hosted by the Middlemount Panthers all proved to be amazing community events. It is with sadness that we say goodbye to long term residents, former Broadsound Shire Councillor Nigel Atkinsons and his lovely wife Christa. After devoting so much time to making the Middlemount community the amazing place it is today, Nigel and Christa are heading south to begin the next stage of their lives. Along with many others I wish them all the very best wishes for the future.”

As Rockhampton Regional Council continues recovery efforts in the wake of the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Marcia, Isaac Regional Council is lending helping hands.Isaac Local Disaster Management Group Chair and Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac staff were enthusiastic to lend their support and skills to help their neighbours.“Around 20 Isaac staff with vehicles and equipment were deployed to Rockhampton Regional Council to help with the cyclone cleanup efforts including removing debris from roads.”

“The workers, from our land care, road works and SES crews were keen to help the devastated region in its time of need.”“Seven Isaac SES members, two vehicles and storm damage equipment spent five days helping the Capricorn coast with chain-sawing fallen trees, clearing debris and tarping roofs.”“I thank our staff for their dedication and commitment, particularly our SES members who are all volunteers.”Mayor Baker encouraged community and corporate members who wish to help our neighbours, to jump on the website www.givit.org.au and donate.Australian charity GIVIT is a grassroots charity that connects those in need with those willing to give.In addition to donated goods, Isaac residents can give money via the GIVIT website of which 100% is used to purchase essential items from local businesses.GIVIT always, wherever possible, purchases items from local providers to support the local economy as it also recovers.

In St Lawrence and Carmila camping is permitted on designated areas and will be charged at $10 per night, per site.Councillor Geoff Bethel said Council has responded to resident concerns and is committed to acting in the best interest of both local communities and the environment.“Council asks that all campers in our region respect the updated regulations, environment and facilities so that we can continue to make our spaces available for all to enjoy,” he said.“We will be increasing our presence and capacity to enforce local laws in coastal camping areas.”“In the lead up to peak season Council will communicate payment methods available to campers and will begin making regular compliance inspections.”“Our region boasts wonderful natural attractions and camping opportunities for tourists and we encourage visitors to continue exploring all that Isaac has to offer.”To assist campers, Isaac Regional Council will be ensuring appropriate signage and/or barricades are installed at identified camping and no camping zones.

Coastal camping strip to flourish under new guidelines Launching into the New Year on the right foot, Isaac Regional Council has the sustainability of its coastal camping strip firmly in sight. In a strong commitment to better serve the needs of Isaac’s coastal communities, tourists and the environment, Council have made considered changes to the Coastal Camping Management Plan.Clearly identified camping zones, reinstating overnight camping and better policing are some of the changes being implemented. To reduce impact on the environment and due to limited facilities, camping will no longer be permitted on public areas in Clairview. Clairview will continue to provide private camping operators and we strongly encourage visitors to make use of these camping facilities.

Clermont’s historic Hoods Lagoon will soon take on its new look, with a five month program of works.Isaac Regional Council’s Hoods Lagoon Rejuvenation Project will develop the Lagoon’s bankside and community areas, improve its water quality and install more historical attractions.Local Isaac Regional Councillor Barbara Stranks said the works would give us more open and useable areas to enjoy.“The Lagoon is an important part of community life and it’s time we delivered long lasting improvements to the area,” she said.“Upgrades are underway to the Anzac Memorial grounds.” “The community will have more level ground and space to commemorate Anzac Day and we’re adding seven new memorial pillars for the Anzac Centenary,” she said. The schedule of works specific for Hoods Lagoon aim to level bankside areas; control erosion with retaining walls; install three water aerators including a centre fountain; and could include changes to the boardwalks. “We aim to have the two aerators and a centre fountain installed and illuminated in time for the Mackay-Isaac Tourism Awards in May,” said Cr Stranks.

Tributes and tears flowed in a nostalgic sendoff as Isaac Regional Council said farewell to one of its longest-standing staff members, Gary Lambert recently.

Displaying a combination of workplace loyalty and dedication rarely seen by today’s standards, Mr Lambert devoted fifty years to both Isaac Regional Council, the former Belyando Shire Council and the wider Isaac community.Gary’s wife Barbara, along with Council colleagues surprised Gary with a buffet luncheon at the Commercial Hotel in Clermont.Acting Mayor Dale Appleton presented Gary with a truck plague, reflecting the department that has benefited from Gary’s wealth of knowledge and experience over the years, and Councillor Barbara Stranks spoke of his fifty year legacy.“Gary began his journey as an apprentice with Belyando Shire Council, as it was formerly known, and has been an integral member of the Engineering and Infrastructure team ever since,” she said. “Upon completing his apprenticeship Gary became a motor mechanic and was offered the position of workshop foreman, which he still holds today.”

“Even a heart transplant in recent years did nothing to slow down this strong-willed team leader who returned to work despite being encouraged to put his feet up and retire,” Cr Stranks concluded. Acting CEO Graham Webb commended Gary’s commitment to the organisation and the void that the stalwart team member would leave behind. “I would like to thank Gary for his five decades of commendable service to both Council and his community,” he said.“It is very impressive to have a person within the organisation, like Gary, who has dedicated his whole working life to one employer and he will be sorely missed.” Gary leaves Isaac Regional Council to finally put his feet up and retire, and Council would like to wish him the very best as he begins this new chapter.

“We’ll also install a new plaque and plant a tree to landmark the 1916 original bridge footing and we’ll be talking with the community about their future vision for Centenary Park,” she said. The Hoods Lagoon Rejuvenation Project is occurring over two stages up until June 2015.The community and visitors are advised there will be closures and light outages at various sites around the Lagoon to allow for project works.
