IntroductionAdvances in Science and Technology (S&T), while materializing the highest level reached by contemporary civilization, place great demands on countries, particularly less developed ones, to keep pace with the progress of human mind.

Against this backdrop, ISESCO was established in 1982, with the dual role to drive progress in Education and Culture and to promote human knowledge and boost research in Science and Technology.

This is why we at ISESCO remain tuned in to the constantly evolving world of knowledge and human experience.

More so today than ever before, Science and Technology (S&T) have become a major source of socio-economic change and a critical element in overall human development.

With such framing in mind, ISESCO is definitely acting, via its various organs, as a hub for research collaboration and knowledge sharing and a standard-setter in these vital fields. The overarching role of ISESCO in this connection is to assist Member States in their drive for social

development and progress based on the universal values of justice, freedom and human dignity.

ISESCO maintains a keen interest in investigating and leveraging the whole gamut and full potential of research-generated knowledge, particularly in relation to the environment, chemistry, physics, mathematics, engineering, medical sciences, renewable energies, education science, social and human sciences.

To this end, ISESCO established a Prize for Science and Technology in 1997, to honour outstanding research works of international standard. The prize is a reward for researchers who have contributed greatly to extending the boundaries of human knowledge in an often-difficult research environment.

We want this guide to be a token of memory and recognition of the pioneering work of the laureates and a source of inspiration for fellow researchers and younger generations. The guide is equally meant to develop awareness of the role of science and technology innovations in helping humanity meet the myriad of challenges associated with climate change, biodiversity loss, natural disasters and their risks, natural resource management, and pandemic disease prevention and control.

This guide is published by ISESCO Centre for Promotion of Scientiic Research (ICPSR), a specialized organ of ISESCO. It aims to strengthen Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) in ISESCO Member States, by focusing on the main three priority areas identiied within ISESCO Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation in the Islamic World: namely, to push forward the boundaries of human knowledge, to respond in the best manner to global challenges, and to expand the scope of technology.

About ICPSR

The ICPSR has as a mission to strengthen the

vital link between Research and Development

(R&D), to foster scientific collaboration among

ISESCO Member States, and to develop delivery

mechanisms for ISESCO strategies in the areas of

science, technology and innovation.

Two major areas of involvement have been

identified for the Centre: boosting STI policies

within ISESCO’s remit, and reinforcing R&D

through transfer of skills, knowledge and

technology, the ultimate aim being to create

leverage for further progress, enhanced market

competitiveness and greater job opportunities for

the youth.

Committed to stimulating innovation talent and

creativity and valuing research works proposing

solutions to key science and technology (S&T)

issues for socioeconomic development, ISESCO

established a prize for science and technology in

1997. Awarded every two years, on the occasion of

the Islamic Conference of Higher Education and

Scientific Research Ministers, the prize is intended

to reward remarkable research works of scientists

and technologists from the Member States (who

reside in and work in their home countries).

The prize is given for outstanding works both

in basic sciences (biology, chemistry, geology,

mathematics and physics) and in technological

innovation.

Nominations for the prize are welcomed from

Member States’ science academies, national

research councils, universities and science and

technology institutions.

For the record, the prize has been granted to 47

researchers to date.

ISESCO Science and Technology Prize6

This guide is intended to

highlight the important work

done by ISESCO in the

areas of science, technology

and innovation (STI). It is

also a demonstration of

how ISESCO values the

tremendous contribution

of the prize-winners to

scientiic and technological

progress in the Muslim

world. One of the valuable

merits of this guide is that

it also provides a stimulus

to focus on research issues

and questions that have

a tangible socioeconomic

impact.
