We allude to those whose faith in theirrespectivechurchesispureandsincere,andthosewhosesinlesslivesreflectthegloriousexampleofthatProphetofNazareth,bywhosemouththespiritoftruthspakeloudlytohumanity.Suchthere

have been at all times. History preserves the names of many as heroes, philosophers,philanthropists, martyrs, and holy men and women;but how many more have lived and died,unknownbut to their intimate acquaintance, unblessedbutby their humblebeneficiaries! ThesehaveennobledChristianity,butwouldhaveshedthesamelustreuponanyotherfaiththeymighthave professed for they were higher than their creed. Thebenevolence of Peter Cooper andElizabethThompson,ofAmerica,whoarenotorthodoxChristians,isnolessChristlikethanthatof

the Baroness Angela BurdettCoutts, of England, who is one. And yet, in comparison with themillionswhohavebeenaccountedChristians,suchhavealwaysformedasmallminority.Theyaretobe found at this day, in pulpit and pew, in palace and cottage;but the increasing materialism,worldliness and hypocrisy are fast diminishing their proportionate number. Their charity, andsimple,childlikefaithintheinfallibilityoftheirBible,theirdogmas,andtheirclergy,bringintofullactivityallthevirtuesthatare implanted inourcommonnature.Wehavepersonallyknownsuch

Godfearingpriestsandclergymen,andwehavealwaysavoideddebatewiththem,lestwemightbeguilty of the cruelty of hurting their feelings; nor would we rob a single layman of hisblindconfidence,ifitalonemadepossibleforhimholylivingandserenedying.

Ananalysisofreligiousbeliefsingeneral,thisvolumeisinparticulardirectedagainsttheologicalChristianity,thechiefopponentoffreethought.Itcontainsnotonewordagainstthepureteachings

ofJesus,butunsparinglydenouncestheirdebasementintoperniciousecclesiasticalsystemsthatareruinoustomansfaithinhisimmortalityandhisGod,andsubversiveofallmoralrestraint.

IN the United States of America, sixty thousand (60,428)men are paid salaries to teach the Science of God and HisrelationstoHiscreatures.

Thesemencontractto imparttous theknowledgewhich

treats of the existence, character, and attributes of ourCreator; His laws and government; the doctrines we are to

believe and the duties we are to practice. Five thousand

with their next of kin, the idolatrous tribes of Israel, palebefore the murderous fanaticism of the alleged followers ofChrist! Even the rapid spread of Mahometanismbefore theconquering sword of the Islam prophet, is a directconsequenceofthebloodyriotsandfightsamongChristians.ItwastheintestinewarbetweentheNestoriansandCyrilians

thatengenderedIslamism;anditisintheconventofBozrahthattheprolificseedwasfirstsownbyBahira,theNestorianmonk. Freely wateredby rivers ofblood, the tree of Meccahas grown till we find it in the present centuryovershadowing nearly two hundred millions of people.
