CANOPY HOME SITES
ORGANIZATIONAL AND STRUCTURAL CONCEPT:
Utility spaces such as bathrooms, kitchens and closests are contained within a simple structural ‘core’. This volume is rooted to the earth and largely solid. It provides much of the structural integrity of the house, allowing the larger volume to remain open in plan and fully glazed.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
CELEBRATE LIFE IN THE CANOPY:
• open plan and glazed walls allow resident to feel connected to the forest
• allow trees to natrually provide shade and privacy
• house is simply organized and constructed; the intricacy of the tree canopy is the ornament
DESIGN THE HOUSE TO PERFORM AS THE TREES PERFORM:
• convert sunlight to energy• store water• provide shade• provide habitat• look beautiful!

Most dense is the Canopy Layer, which coincides with the living level. The forest density assists inshading and providing privacy; its density will reduce the need fordense facade screening in some locations.
Views are desirable at all levels, but are most critical at the living level and the rooftop lookout. Response of facade: screen density decreases from bottom to top.
