Muslims’ Contributions to Civilization (Astronomy)

Source: 1001 Inventions, Muslim Heritage in Our World, Foundation for Science Technology and Civilization

Determining the times of the daily prayers throughout the year, the direction of Mecca from every geographical location, the beginning of each month in the Islamic calendar, coupled with the Quran revelations about the heavens that needed to be explored, were religious motivations that

made astronomy a source of concern for Muslim scholars a thousand years ago. Most of the great astronomical discoveries happened in observato-ries in the East, but for the 300 years that Muslims ruled Toledo in Spain, it was the center of world astronomy. The new astronomical tables made

there were used in Europe for two centuries. Dur-ing the renaissance, Regiomontanus had to rely on Muslim books for his sources and Copernicus re-ferred repeatedly in his book “De Revolutionibus” to Al-Zarqali and Al-Battani, Muslim astronomers of the 10th and 11th centuries.

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam:

I hope and pray that this year brings you and your families abundant blessings and mercy from Allah (swt) and that you may stay in the best state of Iman (faith) and health.

We all are familiar with the most famous proverbs “Time is money” and “Time is Gold”. Time has great importance in the life of a human being. Humanity has always been anxious with time, the passage of time, the measurement of time, and the scientific qualities of time. Time is a blessing on all of us. We should concentrate on how we use time ac-cording to our Islamic perspective. Allah Almighty has clearly stated the value of time in the Quran. We should make the use of time wisely to increase our faith in this life and the hereafter too.

Our beloved Prophet (SAW) said about time in a Hadith: “There are two blessings which many people lose: (They are) health and free time for doing good” (Bukhari). From this saying, we can conclude that we should utilize our time for doing good deeds for the sake of Almighty Allah’s plea-sure. We order our lives around time and in Islam lives are structured around the daily prayers. We should offer prayers on time which are obligatory on every Muslim. In Islam, believers are encouraged to be certain of time, to know its importance and to organize it intelligently. If human beings do not waste or abuse time, but rather think of it as a bless-ing from Allah (swt), then they have every reason to hope for success both in this life and in the hereafter.

I personally invite you to contribute to the center’s ongoing projects, whether it is a small or large contribution, all are welcome. With the blessings of Allah (swt) and the com-munity such as ours, we look forward to InshaAllah another successful year full of accomplishments. We pray that Allah (swt) protects this community from all evils and showers His blessings upon it. Ameen.

Islamic hospitals began in 8th Century Baghdad and in some ways they resembled xenodocheions as they also looked after lepers, the invalid and the destitute. The first organized ‘proper’ hospi-tal was built in Cairo between 872 and 874 CE. The Ahmad ibn Tulun Hospital treated and gave

medicine to all patients free of charge. It had two bath houses (one for men and one for women), a rich library, and a section for the insane. It was an incredibly advanced institution. “It’s [the hos-pital’s] duty to give care to the ill, poor, men and women until they recover. It is at the service of

the powerful and the weak, the poor and the rich, of the subject and the prince, of the citizen and the brigand, without demand for any form of payment, but only for the sake of God, the provider.” The constitution establishing the al-Mansuri Hospital (1284) in Cairo.

At the beginning of the 9th century pharmacists were independent professionals running their own pharmacies, with the skills of compounding, stor-ing and preserving drugs being handed down from father to son. These family-owned businesses were periodically inspected by a government appointed

official, al-Muhtasib (acting as a health and safety executive), and his aides, checking the accuracy of weights and measures, as well as the purity of the drugs used, and stopping the use of any bad and deteriorating drug as well as getting rid of im-postors and charlatans. Pharmacies had their own

dispensaries and manufacturing units like primitive laboratories, producing various drugs and pharma-ceutical preparations. Famous books in this field in-clude “Al-Tasrif” by Al-Zahrawi, “The Book of Phar-macology” by Al-Biruni, and “The Foundation of the True Properties of Remedies” by Abu Al-Mansur.

Muslims were great travelers, explorers and mer-chants. They had to move in search of fresh and better pastures, so knowledge of their surround-ings was vital. The holy pilgrimage journey (Hajj) depended on word of mouth accounts of new and found routes to Mecca and Medina, which were

later put in written form. Another impetus to study geography was the orientation of Qibla. Finally, the political and administrative requirements of the ex-panding Muslim world created another dimension in the search for geographical knowledge. AI-Kh-warizmi, a 9th century Persian scholar, was one of

the earliest scientific descriptive geographers, and a highly talented mathematician. His famous¬ book “The Form of the Earth” inspired a generation of writers in Baghdad and Muslim Spain, to unearth, analyze and record geographical data. Other geop-graphers include Al-Muqaddasi and Al-Kashgharli.

The earliest evidence on the magnetic compass is found in the Persian work called “Collection of Sto-ries” by Muhammad al-Awfi. The year was 1233, and the voyage was over the Red Sea or the Persian Gulf. The compa¬ss was described as follows: ‘a fish made of iron is rubbed with a magnetic stone

and then put in a bowl filled with water; it rotates until it stops, pointing to the south’. The first full description of the use of the magnetic compass for navigation in the Islamic world was by Baylak al-Qibjaqi in his “The Book of Treasure for Merchants who Seek Knowledge of Stones”, written in Egypt

in 1282. He described the use of a floating compass during a sea voyage from Tripoli in Syria to Alex-andria in 1242. Ibn Majid was a master navigator who kew all the sea routes from the Red Sea to East Africa to China. “Kitab-i Bahriye” by Piri Re’is was an excellent guide for mariners.

The astrolabe was developed by Muslims mainly to determine the accurate timings for the 5 daily prayers and the direction of Mecca. This device is “the most important astronomical calculating device before the invention of digital comput-ers and the most important astronomical ob-

servational device before the invention of the telescope”, as described by Dr. Harold Williams, an American astrophysicist. Astrolabes were the astronomical and analogue computers of their time, solving problems relating to the position of celestial bodies. It was through Muslim hard-

working scholars that the astrolabe made it into Europe where modern astronomy was born. The earliest surviving Islamic instrument dates from the middle of the 10th century. Some astrolabes were small, pal-sized and portable, others were huge, with diameters pf a few meters.

Muslims used water to produce energy harnessed in machines like the crank rod system, which took water to higher levels and into aqueducts to quench the thirst of towns. Water drove mills to grind wheat, but in drier parts of the Islamic world alternate power supplies were sought. Des-

ert winds that blew regularly from the same place for about 120 days and had constant direction brought about the idea of windmills, a 7th century discovery in Persia. A Persian had come to the 2nd Caliph Umar, who reigned for 10 years, and con-vinced him to build a mill operated by wind. Wind

power became widely used to run millstones for grinding corn and to draw up water for irrigation. Early windmills were two-story buildings and were built on the towers of castles, hill tops or their own platform and used to contain a millstone ½ a me-ter wide by 3.5 to 4 meters high.

The design and aesthetics of the most impressive dams were produced by the Aghlabid of Tunisia near their capital, al Qayrawan, in the 9th century. In the region of Tunisia, there were over 250 res-ervoirs, with 2 basins each. One was used for de-cantation, the separating of the sediment from the

water, and the other was a reserve. Sometimes, on the larger schemes, there was a third one for draw-ing water. In Iran there is the Kebar dam, the oldest arched dam known (about 700 years old). In to-day’s Afghanistan, 3 dams were completed by King Mahmoud of Ghaznah in the 11th century near his

capital city. Dam construction in Muslim Spain was immense, and the masonry they used was a type of cement that was harder than stone itself, so they hardly needed any repairs in a thousand years. The level of craftsmanship and superiority kept 1/3 of the 7th and 8th century dams are still intact.

The Abbasid caliph Al-Ma’mun paid translators the weight of each book in Gold. During the Abbasids, hundreds of libraries (also privately owned) were opened making many thousands of books available to readers. The Umayyad rulers of Spain had a library of 600,000 volumes in their

huge Cordoba library. There were huge network of public libraries in mosques (called dar al-kutub or ‘The House of Books’) in most big cities plus prestigious private collections, which attracted scholars from all parts of the Muslim world. Be-fore the Mongols decimated Baghdad in 1258, it

had 36 libraries and over 100 book dealers, some of whom were also publishers. There were similar libraries in Cairo, Aleppo (that had the largest and oldest mosque library called ‘the Sayfiya’ with a collection of 10,000 volumes) and the major cities of Iran, Central Asia and Mesopotamia.

A major breakthrough in communication happened in Baghdad when the Abbasid caliphs used carrier pigeons, because they noted the tendency of certain pigeons to fly straight home from wherever they may be. A fast one-way postal service, always back to base, became possible. Through selective breeding

of suitable birds, the homing pigeon developed, and Baybars (a Mamluk caliph), 500 years later made this a very effective form of delivering messages. A thou-sand years ago a Fatimid caliph had fresh cherries delivered by six hundred pigeons. Each had a silk bag holding two cherries each. In 14th century medieval

India, it was couriers, like modern day relay runners, who took messages to the Muslim sultan sitting in Delhi. In all, it only took five days for a message to get from the eastern edge of India to the capital. Pi-geon post was in operation when Paris was besieged during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

Carpets were first made by the Bedouin tribes of Arabia, Persia and Anatolia, who used them as tents, sheltering them from sand storms; floor coverings providing great comfort for the household; wall cur-tains providing privacy; and for items such as blan-kets, bags and saddles. Muslims developed both the

design and weaving technique, and so their carpets came in wonderful colors. This was also due to Mus-lim chemistry producing new tinctures for tanning and textiles. Muslim carpets were renowned for their quality and rich geometric patterns of stars, oc-tagons, triangles and rosettes, all arranged around

a large central medallion. Arabesque and floral patterns filled the areas around these shapes pull-ing it all together with a sense of unity. The earliest English contact with Muslim carpets was when the grandson of William the conqueror gave a carpet to an English church in the 12th century.

Ibn al-Haitham, while in a room one day, noticed light coming through a small hole made in the win-dow shutters. It fell onto the wall opposite and it was the half-moon shape of the sun’s image dur-ing eclipses. From these experiments, he explained that light travelled in a straight line and when the

rays were reflected off a bright subject they passed through the small hole and did not scatter but crossed and reformed as an upside-down image on a flat white surface parallel to the hole. He then es-tablished that the smaller the hole, the clearer the picture. His discoveries led to the invention of the

camera obscura, and Ibn al-Haitham built the first camera, a camera obscura or pinhole camera, in history. He went on to explain that we see objects upright and not upside down, as the camera does, because of the connection of the optic nerve with the brain, which analyses and defines the image.
