aims to stimulate, challenge
and motivate high achieving
and gifted students towards
higher levels of thinking and
achievement. Students in this
program will be in a culture
of high expectations and will
be offered extended work as
part of a tailored curriculum
focused on mainly Numeracy
and Literacy subjects.
The Accelerated Quran Pro-
gram was also introduced this
year which aims to help ad-
vanced students to memorise
the entire Quran.
Preparations for the Umrah trip
in the Term 1 break are pro-
gressing well. I am glad to an-
nounce that seven of our Year 10
students will be participating in
the Umrah trip this year, two of
whom have been awarded full
scholarships and two others half
scholarships. The college
launched this program to moti-
vate participants and engage them
in a life changing experience.
Students who participated last
year had a remarkable experience
of visiting many important Islamic
institutions and attractions.
This year the college will be in-
troducing a ski camp for the
female students in Year 10 & 11.
The college will offer four full
scholarships and four half scholar-
ships for students of high aca-
demic and behavioural stand-
ards.
Finally I would like to empha-
size the importance of daily
attendance and punctuality.
Daily attendance of students
has a paramount effect on their
education. The college will
follow up on this daily and ac-
tion will be taken to maximise
students’ attendance. Your
cooperation will be highly ap-
preciated for the best interest
of the students.
Furthermore please note that
the date to elect our 2017
Parent Committee will take
place on Wednesday, 8 March,
2017 at 5:00 pm at the College.
I encourage all interested par-
ents to attend this meeting.
Thank you for your continued
trust in the Islamic College of
Melbourne and insha’Allah 2017
will be another successful year.

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah
Wabarakatuh
Alhamdulillah we have had a
smooth start to the 2017 year.
Our students came back refreshed
from the school holidays and seem
hungry for knowledge.
I would like to thank all parents
who attended the information
sessions on 6 & 7 February, 2017.
Such sessions provide a platform
to communicate important infor-
mation to parents. They also pro-
vide a ground for parents to clarify
any queries they have in regards to
their child’s education.
This year I am proud to announce
the introduction of the following
initiatives:
Segregation of primary and
secondary parts of the college.
The development of the senior
village was an important step
in segregating primary and
secondary students. This has
provided more space and
facilities for both junior and
senior schools at the College.
The Secondary Accelerated
Program (SAP) caters for the
special needs of high achieving
and gifted students at the
College. SAP was introduced
for Year 7 and 8 students this
year and one year level will be
added to the program every
year, insha’Allah. This program
Year 10 ICOM student receiv-
ing a Certificate of Outstand-
ing Achievement in Science
from Victoria University.
Important Reminders!
Page 2
The college has separate bell times for Primary and Secondary this year. School times will commence 5 minutes earlier and
Secondary students will finish 5 minutes later than Primary. Therefore, Primary school times are 8.35am to 3.30pm and Sec-
ondary school times will be 8.35am to 3.35pm.
Parents/carers with students in Prep must collect their children from their classroom. For students in other year levels, it is
the parents/carers sole responsibility to ensure that students are picked up on time and safely from the assembly area.
Parents who want to collect students early are advised not to do so after 3.15pm, unless extremely necessary.
This year we expect all students in Year 7 to Year 11, to be wearing the new uniform. This includes the blazer and the cor-
rect sports uniform. There will be a transition period of one year for parents to purchase the new Primary School Uniform
and by 2018 all Primary students are also expected to be wearing the new uniform.
Parents are reminded that during Term 1 and Term 4, students are required to wear the summer uniform.
The Uniform Policy has been uploaded to the Parent Portal to ensure that parents and students are aware of the correct
uniform. If you have forgotten your log in details for the Parent Portal, please contact the college or email itsup-
Further to the summer uniform, students must have a hat to play outside. The NO HAT, NO PLAY rule applies during the
warmer months. This applies during PE classes also.
If parents have not done so, please complete the CSEF Application Form available from the Administration office and return
it to the college as soon as possible. Parents have been contacted and an SMS was sent out in regards to this. If a CSEF form
is not returned to the college, the health care card discount will also be made void for these parents as the college will as-
sume you no longer have a valid Health Care or Concession Card.
Please ensure that students are given food or money for recess and lunch as it is a huge concern that students have been
coming to school without any food. Secondary students are allowed to buy straight from the canteen, however Primary
students are to make a lunch order and hand it to their homeroom teacher during morning homeroom.
Parents who have children in both Primary and Secondary are to ensure that each child has their own food or money for
recess and lunch times. Due to the difference in the bell times, students break times are also separate.
Please make sure your child’s name is clearly marked on their uniform and school items, including books and stationery.
If parents are planning on taking their child/ren on long leave, a students on long leave/ overseas form must be completed
and submitted to the Administration Office at least two weeks prior to going on your leave.
As you are aware, the college cannot provide medication to students unless prescribed to them, this includes paracetamol.
If your child requires medication, your child’s name and directions must be on the label before handing it to the nurse.
Please ensure you inform the college or update your details on the Parent Portal if your contact details have changed.

2016 ICOM Concert On Tuesday, 6 December 2016, ICOM held its annual school concert. The school concert is a huge
event on our school calendar and one that is highly valued by students and the wider school community.
Students entertained staff, other students, their parents and the
school community with their cheerful and dazzling
performances. A great deal of fun and enthusiasm was displayed
to showcase the amazing depth of talent at ICOM.
The hard work by all our teachers and all students was evident
in the performances.
We thank everyone who contributed to ensuring the concert
continues to be a great success and to all parents who not only
enjoyed their child’s class performance but also appreciated
the performances other
students at ICOM had to
offer.
Inshallah, we will see you all
again at the next ICOM
concert.

2016 is a memorable year in the history of Year 6 Graduation. This is the first time the
Year 6 graduation has been held on campus in the school’s iconic gymnasium. The grad-
uation committee and the great teachers of ICOM made this a day to be remembered
always. The graduating students looked so smart in their gowns and hats not to men-
tion their sash.
On behalf of the school I would like to thank all the
participants who made this day possible. I hope to
attend this event for many more years to come, In-
sha’Allah!

Prep’s First Day of School
We would like to extend a big welcome to our 2017 Prep students and their families!
What an amazing start to the year we have had. We are so proud of how well the students have settled
into the school routine and how quickly they have adapted to the school environment. It is so wonderful
to see friendships form in the classroom and in the playground.
The students have had a busy schedule in their first week of
school and the classroom teachers are very impressed with how
excited the students are about starting school every morning.
They have already made friends and are enjoying settling into the
school routine.
The Preps are listening beautifully to Big Books and have already
begun to read along when there is a pattern. Well done! The
teachers are so proud of how well all the students get along.
They are already looking out for each other. We are super im-
pressed with the way students have formed new friendships and
settled into school life.

It is going to be a fantastic year for our Science students at ICOM. Your science teachers
have prepared a range of fun- learning activities and exciting science excursions and pro-
grams.
A big part of your science course will involve working in the laboratory and doing exciting
and challenging experiments. You can expect to walk into the science laboratory with fresh
sheep hearts, bull eyes and slimy frogs scattered all over the benches. You will have the
pleasure of dissecting these organs and enjoying their beautiful smells and slimy textures.
You will be working like real scientists using microscopes, making crystals, volcanoes and
slime, examining rocks and minerals and heaps of other experiments and challenges.
In order to make the most of your science classes, please make sure of the following:
Always complete your homework. Which will be given three times a week.
Always bring your lab coat and safety goggles during lab days.
Come to the science class with an open and curious mind about the new things you will be learning.
Our dear parents are more than
welcome to address any issues they
have about their child’s progress in
Science. Feel free to make an ap-
pointment with the teacher or send
an email.
I hope you are excited about Science
this year as much as we are.

A flash back to 2016. It has been a pleasure teaching Visual Arts last year and
always enjoy engaging the creative way of thinking with the Primary Stu-
dents at ICOM.
ICOM’s first Art Gallery was a big success and a big step forward for all our
celebrating learning and achievements in 2016 through Art and Creativity.

ICOM Newsletter
2017 at ICOM
Assalamualaikum
We are very optimistic that 2017 will be a remarkable and distinguished
year in the history of ICOM from many perspectives.
Our secondary students moved to their new secondary village, which is completely separated from the primary.
What a great start to the year with brand new classes, brand new furniture, brand new library, technology inte-
gration (interactive whiteboards), a laptop for every student, a secondary computer lab, less student numbers
per class and unlimited resources.
We are excited to run a VCE program for the first time this year. We have a dedicated group of 23 Year 11
students studying 12 VCE subjects (Arabic, Biology, Business Management, Chemistry, ICT, English, General
Maths, History, Legal Studies, Maths Methods, Physics and Psychology). In 2018 we are planning to add two
more subjects: Accounting & Visual Communication and Design.
Our school is also committed to supporting our VCE students outside of school hours. For this purpose, we
subscribed to an online program called ‘Edrolo’. All students can access this program at any time and it covers
most of our VCE subjects. More than 250 schools are members of Edrolo and the total number of Victorian
students benefiting from this program reaches 50,000. Some of the major features of this program are: Engaging
short and sharp videos, access to previous exams which can be printed by the students, multiple choice ques-
tions and short answer questions, self-marking, teachers can monitor what students watch and access as well as
their progress, and allows teachers to create a database to monitor each students' strengths and weakness' in
each subject. All Edrolo content is aligned with the Victorian curriculum.
We are proud to announce our Secondary Accelerated Program (SAP) which covers four learning areas: Maths,
Science, English and Humanities to cater for the needs of our gifted high achiever students of Year 7 & 8. We
also run a Maths accelerated program for the Year 10 students. Inshallah in 2018 our accelerated program will
include all secondary (Years 7 – 10).
We continue pay a lot of attention to Arabic and Islamic education at ICOM. All our Arabic and Quran teachers
are supported with ‘support teachers’ in their classes to support students according to their abilities.
Another remarkable change this year is related to the school curriculum for Prep to Year 10. We successfully
updated our curriculum documentation and replaced the Australian Curriculum with the Victorian Curriculum
as of the beginning of 2017. Many thanks to our dedicated staff members and teachers for their efforts and com-
mitment in this regard.
Our students are displaying amazing behaviour this year. They participated in formulating and suggesting a new
Classroom Behaviour Agreement for 2017 which has been adopted by the school.
Alhamdulillah we are growing into a big and competitive school. Our focus this year is on differentiation and
quality teaching to cater for the varied needs of our students.
Our school is dedicated to supporting our students to achieve their goals. Parents can also play an important
role in supporting the students. This is a joint responsibility between the school and the parents. We are hoping
for an effective partnership and we really would like to see the parents more involved in the education of their
children. Always remember that TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT, INSHALLAH.

Thank you to the parents that attended the information
sessions that happened on 6 and 7 February. Both ses-
sions provided extremely beneficial information an op-
portunity to share some of the great things happening at
ICOM and to meet your child’s teacher.
The principal, Dr Abdul Kamareddine enjoyed meeting
with so many parents and was pleased to know that our
students are receiving the support from their families
that is an essential in-
gredient in developing a
culture of aspiration and
