Country Risk Profile

• Afghanistan is prone to

natural disasters:

• Earthquakes

• Flooding

• Droughts

• Landslides

• Avalanches and

• Sandstorms

• Afghanistan is prone to Man-

made disasters:

• conflicts

• IDPs

• Plane crash

• Traffic incidence

• Fires

• Attacks, war…

Page 3: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - ESCAP

Country Risk Profile

• Located in an area of high-seismic activity,

• Earthquakes are frequent in the north and

northeast regions that trigger landslides

• Extreme climate and harsh geo-physical conditions

• Widespread poverty and underdevelopment

Page 4: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - ESCAP

Country Risk Profile

• Climate change and Environmental Degradation

• More than three decades of conflict has caused

huge human loss, resulted in:

• More than 5 million refugees,

• Infrastructure damage, and

• Slow developmental progress

Country Risk Profile

• Between 1980 – 2010 around 130 large events of

disaster occurred that resulted:

• Death toll: 19,655 and

• Affected more than 7.5 million people

• Extensive conflicts increased vulnerability and a

decreased coping mechanism at the community

level

Page 15: Islamic Republic of Afghanistan - ESCAP

Interventions

• Conducted Community Based Climate Change Adaptationstudy in project location to understand communityperception about Climate Change and local adaptationmeasures

• Scientific Remote hazards assessment was conducted

• Incorporate the risk assessment part in the development ofVillage Disaster Management Plan (VDMP)

• Adding the angle of climate related risk in the village andschool awareness seminars

Outcome:

• Identify Mitigation projects for natural hazards with the combination ofbio-engineered activities, which includes the plantations along withstructural mitigation

• Establishment of weather monitoring post in the project locations tounderstand the localized precipitation rate

• Installation of community based early warning systems for measuringthe river flooding in some of the project locations

• Preparing the mitigation materials at local level by engagement ofwomen group in gabion weaving project to reduce economicvulnerability

• Implementing Natural Resources Management Project projects on themountain slopes for slope stabilization and well as increase the greencover
