SituationThe Greek Isles are one of the world’s most coveted and beautiful tourist destinations. The crystal water, idyllic, mountainous islands and history-laden vistas draw tourists from across the globe. More than 2 million tourists flock to the islands in summer alone, which puts a strain on the Greek power systems located on the small islands. Long-term and reliable power is difficult to maintain on an island.
In 2011, with tourism at an all-time high, the island of Rhodes needed a fast, mobile solution to stave off blackouts and power failures. EXPO Power Systems S.A., in cooperation with METKA S.A./RODAX S.A., purchased a TM2500+ gas turbine generator that was shipped from Hungary on May 23 and arrived in Rhodes by June 16. Once up and running by July 1, the generator helped meet the summer peak power needs of the Rhodes, Greece electricity grid.

SolutionsAs the newest enhancement of GE’s trailer-mounted unit, the TM2500+ offers a 31% increase in power in a more compact footprint with less time than ever between contract and commissioning.
The TM2500+ is capable of producing up to 30 megawatts of power and can achieve full power in less than 10 minutes. That makes it perfect for providing a base load bridge to permanent power installations or for generating backup power supporting natural disaster relief, plant shutdowns, or equipment maintenance.
The TM2500+ has a small footprint of 24 m x 7 m (78 ft. x 21 ft.), easily converts from 50 to 60 Hz and is flexible to operate on either natural gas or liquid distillate fuels. It is easy to operate and maintain, and has low NOx emissions with demineralized water injection of 25 ppm (gas)/42 ppm (liquid).
The generator is packaged on a two-trailer system with a top-mounted air inlet filter and exhaust assemblies, and as a result, requires 77% less space than its predecessor. Both the inlet filter assembly and the exhaust duct are mounted directly on top of the mail trailer assembly, making the TM2500+ easily transported by ship, air, or road to the most remote locations around the globe.
The improved TM2500+ design also offers an increased number of quick-disconnect fittings, which simplifies and accelerates the installation process, allowing for assembly and set up in just one day. The effort in Rhodes was a full turnkey installation, including BOP, MV-LV connections, as well as a fuel and water skid supply and connections, and CEMS. The package included operation and maintenance for 90 days.
“It is the most efficient and reliable machine on the island,” said Stamatiadis. “It has never failed to start and is always able to bring power up to the maximum needed whenever requested.”
Tourism is the cornerstone of the Greek economy and the dollars generated during the summer are crucial in difficult economic times. “We would have been thrilled with 95% availability,” said Stamatiadis. “But, in 2011, power was available 100% of the time. With our collaboration with GE, we are very happy we’ve been able to deliver what we signed up for, and have been able to support the island of Rhodes with continual power.”
