April 11, 2013 Island Moon A 11 Angler’s Alley On the Rocks By Jay Gardner Literally as I sit here writing this, a cool front is moving through the area. These late season cool fronts are a cause for excitement for most birders. Migration is occurring right now, with many species and numbers of birds heading up from Mexico and South America on their way to various places in North America and Canada. The humming birds are on their way back from various Caribbean islands, South America, and the Yucatan peninsula flying directly across the Gulf of Mexico. Many fly at night, and during the day they will be a little higher up than you can see in order to take advantage of the southeast winds (flying down-wind). The thing with the cool fronts however, is that it will bring north winds, which will cause the birds to fly to the ground and settle in trees, waiting for the southeast winds to come back and carry them north. This phenomenon is called a “fall-out”. Now, the birds don’t literally “fall” from the sky, but in some places it can seem like they do. They will amass in areas and voraciously forage around for food, as they just had a long flight, and have a long flight to go yet. This is one of the hardest times for these migrants. It’s really hard to be a migrant if you took off too late across the Gulf to get to the shore before the north winds hit. There will be lots of birds that won’t make it, and literally will collapse into the water within sight of land. It’s kind of morbid, but after this happens, you can typically find a lot of birds that will wash up at the beach over the next 4-5 days. Chupacabras have to eat too, though. A Rigged Flight There will be a lot of birds that will become enticed by structure and land on some of the rigs offshore. This will likely be a death sentence, because there is no food or water on the rigs that can sustain these birds. Some make it away however, and the short break will give them enough strength to continue and complete their journey. In any case, this is a great time of the year to see many species of birds. Places like Blucher Park downtown and Paradise Pond out in Port Aransas will be visited by almost more birders than birds at times it seems, LOL. But there will be lots of great birds to see. Dust off those binoculars and get out there. Attracting Birds You can also entice these migrants to your yard for your own viewing pleasure from the comfort of your home. Most small warblers are attracted to large, old oak and mesquite trees, which abound in this area. Keep your eyes peeled if you have one of these trees. In addition, you can put out mealworms, bird seed, and oranges sliced in half to attract some of the most colorful of these birds. Most importantly, don’t forget to put those humming bird feeders out, and I mean PRONTO! Water Temps The water temperature at Packery Channel shows to be in the mid 70’s on the incoming tide. Unfortunately, it looks like TCOON either removed the Bob Hall Pier monitoring station, or they have it down for maintenance. Water temp is 72 degrees at the Port Aransas station, and the Sargassum is starting to come in. Jeff Wolda (new guide down the beach) reported that there were schools of menhaden with jacks and sharks following them around on the lower section of the beach. Spring time is really a great time to be down the beach, although you have to deal with the Sargassum, which makes throwing the long rods or shark fishing almost unbearable. The jetties are another option, as Jacob and Lauren “Paz” found out recently, as there are still some Spanish mackerel around. Now you don’t have to go down to the beach to see the conditions, you can just get online. Notes ring out from different directions calling us to areas close and far, and lead us to hunt fish with an orchestra of instrumental techniques and tackle. Being able to ring the tones to different fishing methods and matching them to the varied conditions will make your drag sing out with some songs of the happy fishermen. We have been switching gears mid-day and enjoying both fishing with live bait and lures as well as targeting different species of game fish during their peak feeding times. Using live bait on bottom rigs in “fish funnels” and along deep channels as well as drifting with popping corks over live shrimp have built some big boxes, limits, and good times. We strike string and bow to play the sounds of using artificial lures from the boat and on foot. Starting from the lower notes soft plastics precisely thrown into each sand pocket while stalking the shallows. When Trophy Trout look towards the surface your fishing adventures explode with frothing head shakes and tail slaps. Putting all of this together can lead you to some awesome Island Adventures. Windy Days On the wind Windy WINDY days we start with live shrimp in deeper gravel areas putting the SMACK down on some big powerful drum, sheep head, and redfish. Everything eats shrimp so right now we are anchoring up in these 4 to 8ft deep areas where current funnels through the Intracoastal Canal or whipping around contours in the bottom out in the deep flats. The current wipes the bottom away and makes trenches like the deepest parts of Emmort’s Hole, the mouth of Baffin, the Land Cut, and the Intracoastal Canal from the JFK to Bird Island. The trout and redfish will be flowing along beside the hordes of shrimp migrating in the current. Covering more ground across the fast flats we have been drifting with the radio and finding pockets of fish along the steps of elevation running north and south in the Intracoastal and Baffin. Southeast winds have pushed us up to the rocks, sand bars, and shorelines where reds have been hanging out in 3ft of water. Shrimp and popping corks are so effective for all types of fish species you end up with a great mixed box. Live shrimp is always better than dead and is worth the extra effort to keep an air system. I’ve been adding some flash and smell to our popping cork set ups. Fish Bites are small colored natural pieces of “fish cloth” that you put on the hook. They will catch fish alone but will really light the bite on fire when combined with a live shrimp. Orange works well with reds and drum as it looks like the orange ends of a crab claw. Trout attack the green and white well. Mama Trout Every time I’ve gotten away and picked along with soft plastics I’ve stuck a great trout in the last few weeks. With waders I coach my guys to attack the area in slow motion. Sneaking in like a sniper to “OFF” a BIG SMART MAMA TROUT. Slowly enter the area with a cross wind, not giving her a chance to hear or sence your foot steps or the mud from your path. Present your lures across her face as she looks ahead with the sun to her back. Watch the waves for skittish bait and single fish slicks that will pull you into her bedding area. She will be sitting in the spot that favors her most, and looking to eliminate perch and eels that will feed on the eggs she released. My Lime Norton Sand Eel and those little LOGIC LURES have been plucked from many sand pockets by some territorial fat girl trout lately. The top water bite is best with at least a ten MPH wind on the water. Even drifting from the boat has yielded a good surface bite with long casts and the ability to cover lots of ground. Let the fish come to the lure when using big plugs. Land Cut Migrations of fish are at its peak right now as well as the spawning and birth of great numbers of every species in the bay. We ran down to the Land Cut this week with a 40mph wind pushing a flood of water from the south. We were there on the hunt for some Giant Trout entering the Baffin Bay area. With our first stop we stretched the lines with a few keeper specks and a drum or five. Our second spot was an old gas well pocket along the side of the Intracoastal. Shallow grass beds and sand spots littered the beach and glowed in the mid-morning sun. We slipped the anchor in from the bow and eased up along the side of the ditch. The first few drum were out deep but as things got settled we picked up a trout or two along the grass. My guest today cocked his head and peered into the mirrored surface like a heron. His eyes drew into the pockets between the grassy humps, a small group of baitfish flickered from the deeper open water and scattered into the shallows away from a slashing trout. The next cast landed high on the shallow shelf and with it a large fish bolted and boiled as she spooked in a circle and retreated over the edge. She came back from below and plucked the shrimp from the edge of the grass as Dale let his line drift just off the bank. The rod doubled back and she shot into the shallow water with white water splashing and frothy water came out from her gills. Her silver sides caught the sun and we could see her large spots as her tail slapped the water when she dove down towards the bottom. We scrambled to get the net and other lines out of the way. DALE’S HANDS WERE WHITE WITH GRIP AS SHE DOVE DEEP AND TRIED TO RIP THE HOOK FROM HER FLESH. Dale’s eyes blackened over like a Great White Shark just before the crimson tide fills the sea. As his back drew like an archer’s bow the rod bent and the hook flew out at him like a middle finger from a teenager’s hand. My heart sank as I reached for another bait. “Well, she is still out there!” Dale screams. A few casts later my Big Trout specialist rolled another bait just off the bank and again the rod rocked tip over and we watched as Dale kicked his heels up on the rail of the boat and reeled as the drag sang out. As the fish surfaced to our surprise it was not a drum but another big trout. I dove the net under her and swooped her into the boat. She looked into the man at the end of the line and I could see the odd connection between them. The Hunter and the Hunted, the dance of fate that brought them together would end on the dinner table. The Old Trophy Trout met her match that day along the water, sand, and dunes of the Great Wild Horse Desert. Angler’s AlleyOn the Rocks

Literally as I sit here writing this, a cool front is moving through the area. These late

season cool fronts are a cause for excitement for most birders. counterintuitive. One might think there are more dry lots than waterfront lots, well, just because. But no. According to Maybeth over the POA there are approximately 2000 platted waterfront lots on The Island and only about 1000 dry lots. A while back some of those dry lots could be had for only about $20,000 but no more; the cheapest dry lot we know of as of this writing is $40,000. the price of vacant lots bottomed out when the plethora of new homes started going up a little over a year ago. Everyday now finds us with fewer and fewer vacant lots for Island Pocket Gophers to concentrate in...as the lots the fewer the gophers get more nervous.

This is the time of the year when I return to being young and full of hope. The time of spring where you can smell the fresh cut grass, look up into a sky so blue it hurts your eyes; you hear birds singing and feel the tingle in your hands when you pick up a baseball bat. It’s like magic. My mind also races back to the days of baseball on my radio and the voices of this great game. No real baseball fan ever forgets how it began for them. Ernie Harwell gave me my start.

At the age of 91, he found out he had incurable cancer. He and his wife Lulu decided he would not have additional surgery or treatment. For most of my childhood years growing up in North Carolina, he was my “voice of summer.” He came into my home most every night through the airwaves of my transistor radio, hidden under my pillow.

Southern as molassesMy favorite TV announcers

were Joe Morgan and Jon Miller. But Ernie Harwell was first. I heard him call the 1958 and 1961 All-Star games when I was 7 and 10, and then heard him again in the 1963 and 1968 World Series. He also called the Baltimore Orioles’ regular season games, along with the American League Division and Championship games for CBS and ESPN.

It just seemed to me that whenever there was a big game, Ernie got the call. I liked his broadcasting style. He used poetry, music, and history to describe the action. His voice was low-key and as southern as molasses. He was easy to listen to and reminded me of an uncle telling stories on the back porch when I was a kid. It felt like we were having a conversation. He painted pictures with his words. The game has a certain rhythm about it and therefore needs an announcer who is descriptive, colorful, and entertaining, a person who can describe exactly what he sees and then fill in the blanks afterward. Ernie could speak for days about every player from Ty Cobb to Nolan Ryan and most of the players in between. Along the way, he developed his own home run call: “This ball is loooooong gone.” His “two for the price of one,” description of a double play was fun.

Caught by the fellow from Bugtussle!He amazed fans with his call of a pop foul into

the seats, when he would say “That one was caught by a fan from _______,” and then he would plug in the name of a town close by. Fans scratched their heads and wondered how he knew. Perhaps his most famous call occurred on a third strike when he would say, “He stood there like the house by the side of the road, and watched that one go by.”

Ernie Harwell was born on January 25, 1918, in Washington, Georgia. His passion for baseball has paid off as to this day, he has never had to pay for a ticket to a game since the age of five. That’s when he became the visiting team’s batboy for his home-town Atlanta Crackers. Ernie also sold soda pop, popcorn, and scorecards before the game, at Ponce de Leon Park in Atlanta. At the age of 15, Ernie applied for a job with the Sporting News magazine which did not have a correspondent in Atlanta at that time. Ernie wrote an article and sent it to Edgar Brands, editor of the paper, and signed it W. Ernest Harwell. “I tried to sound as old as possible,” said Ernie. He got the job. After graduating from Emory University, he started writing for the Atlanta Constitution.

By 1943, you could hear his golden voice on WSB radio announcing baseball games for the Atlanta Crackers. Then he was called away to serve in the Marines for four years. He returned in 1947 and then the following year, he became the only baseball announcer to be traded for a

player. Brooklyn Dodger General Manager, Branch Rickey, traded catcher Cliff Dapper to Atlanta for Harwell. Red Barber, the regular announcer, had been hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer.

Tool lazy to workErnie stayed with the Dodgers through 1949

and then joined the Giants from 1950-1953. Ernie moved to Baltimore, the home town of Babe Ruth, in 1954, and stayed with the Orioles until 1959. In 1960 Ernie replaced Van Patrick of the Detroit Tigers as their main announcer.

He stayed until 2002 and retired at the age of 84.

Even after his retirement, the Tigers kept asking him to return to the booth for special occasions. He was such a big part of their history. He began to broadcast ESPN Wednesday Night Games in 2003 and continued to cover All-Star Games for Fox. Baseball was not ready to let Ernie go.

Harwell loved baseball and once said, “I can’t imagine life without baseball.” He thought umpires were special and treated them with the utmost respect. He was once asked why so

many great announcers had southern roots. “Most southern men are too lazy to work for a living and would rather sit around and spin tales,” he said.

Ernie had started out in the 1940’s when re-creation of baseball games were done in studio. Information from the game was fed to the broadcaster via teletype or ticker tape. Information like S2F meant strike two fastball in radio lingo. “Dutch” Reagan, otherwise known as Ronald, got his start doing re-creation baseball games in Iowa with the Cubs.

His two favorite stories are: 1) In the 1940’s, Joe Engel, owner and president of the Chattanooga Lookouts, told him that one day a hold-out player sent him a wire that said, “Double my salary or count me out.” Joe answered with his own wire “1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10.” 2) Sam Mele, manager of the Twins, got a call from his best scout, Del Wilber. Wilber said, “I have just witnessed the best pitcher I have ever seen, and I have the kid hidden in a hotel room. He struck out 27 batters straight. Only one batter fouled a pitch off this kid. Mele said, “Sign the guy who got the foul, we need hitters.”

For 55 years, 42 of them with the Tigers, Harwell sat down behind a microphone. It is estimated that he called in excess of 8,300 games. On May 4, 2010, my voice of summer passed away at 92 years of age. The press box at Camden Yards is named after Ernie, and the Tigers flew their flags at half mast at Comerica Park. Sometimes life goes by faster than a 5-4-3 double play.

Dotson’s note: With all the attention on the NCAA Basketball’s Men’s National Championship which was won by Louisville Monday night in New Orleans, your attention is now invited to the behind the scenes story of another National Championship (NAIA). This championship was won by Westmont College’s women’s team. Thanks to my good friend Jim Tunney (NFL Referee Retired) who sent me this story.

When the final buzzer sounded on Tuesday night, Westmont players and coaches rushed into each other’s arms, celebrating a 71-65 win over Lee of Tennessee (34-3) and their first NAIA Women’s Basketball National Championship. Tears and smiles abounded as the Warriors’ quest to win five games in six days in the 32-team national tournament came to a successful conclusion. “I am really happy for my players and the journey we have been through as a group,” said Westmont head coach Kristen Moore. “The perseverance we have shown through trials on and off the court seasoned us for all of the close games we have had throughout the entire tournament.”

Jim Tunney wrote-Westmont College, a small (1300+ students) Christian, liberal college located in Montecito, California won the 2012-13 NAIA Women’s basketball championship. Not much of a big deal, most would say, happens to one of those small schools every year. Yeah, but ya gotta hear the “rest-of-the-story”. A big thanks to my friend and colleague LA Times esteemed sportswriter, Bill Plaschke, who recently wrote about this for the Times. It bears repeating.

Westmont’s women’s basketball head coach Kristen McKnight met Alex Moore, a Westmont kinesiology professor in 2003. Alex thought they were “made for each other,” but Kristen didn’t have time for romance--basketball was her passion. Alex was relentless. They married in 2008. On May 9, 2012 Alex underwent colon surgery for Crohn’s disease during which he tragically died due to a pulmonary embolism.

Kristen was eight months pregnant with their first child. Seven weeks later the baby was born. Kristen named her Alexis. Time for a sabbatical; I mean, come on, a grieving widow and a new born, not Kristen--she barely took a day off.

Standing in front of her team in August, 2013 preparing for the season, she said, “I’m here and this is going to be a hard road, but I’m here”. Kristen continued, “I’m going to be real; you’re gonna see me cry a lot, but I have to do this.” She didn’t have to do it at all! Do courage, dedication and commitment come to mind?

Winning 24 of 27 games for the Warriors to be the Golden State Athletic Conference champions along with NAIA champs would normally be the story; but it was actually the easy part. Members of the athletic department, the community, and the dozen or so players all pitched-in to take care of Alexis. Changing

Alexis’ diapers on an aluminum bleacher in the women’s bathroom, asking the men’s team players to turn their heads (since both teams travel together on the bus) while Kristen breast feed Alexis, was just some of the many trials she endured.

Even Alex, then deceased, contributed. Two days after his death while rummaging through Alex’s office preparing for his memorial service, Kristen found these Bible verses on two Post-it notes: “Encourage the oppressed, defend the cause of fatherless, plead the case of the widow” and “Be strong and courageous and do the work, do not be afraid or discouraged for the Lord God, my God, is with you”. These were Alex’s final words to Kristen.

Island Intersections Fail to Crack the Top Ten Ten Crash Sites

The Corpus Christi Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section has identified the locations in Corpus Christi with the most frequency of vehicle crashes for the month of March, 2013.

The intersection of Airline and Holly was the top of the list for the most vehicle crashes in Corpus Christi during the period between March 1 and March 31, 2013 with a total of four crashes reported to Corpus Christi Police. The cause of three of the four crashes for that period at that intersection was unsafe speed. All four crashes happened in the afternoon between 12:30pm and 4:30pm.

The second and third location for the most frequent vehicle crashes in the month of March was at Weber and South Padre Island Drive. The north side of the freeway and the south side of the freeway each had three vehicle crashes. The cause of three of the six crashes reported at Weber and South Padre Island Drive were for changing lanes when unsafe. Other causes for the six crashes at Weber and South Padre Island Drive were for unsafe speed, following too closely, and for defective equipment.

There were 28 total vehicle crashes in the top ten locations. The cause of 16 of those 28 crashes was unsafe speed. The Corpus Christi Police Department urges drivers to observe posted speed restrictions and travel at a safe speed.

The top ten most frequent vehicle crash locations reported to the Corpus Christi Police for March 2013 are:

Seventeen Year Old Woman Arrested For Two Armed Robberies

on The IslandA seventeen year old woman was arrested by

Corpus Christi Police as she attempted to leave a store she had just robbed Friday morning on Padre Island. It was, in fact, the second robbery of the morning for the 17-year-old woman.

Seventeen year old Miranda Garcia went into the convenience store located at 15302 South Padre Island Drive and displayed a handgun. Garcia demanded cash from the register and left with the money in a white 2008 Nissan Altima.

The 20-year-old store employee called police and provided a description of the robbery suspect. Corpus Christi Police Officers saw the Nissan Altima parked partially blocking a handicap space in front of the convenience store located at 14526 South Padre Island Drive while they were on the way to the robbery call.

Two Corpus Christi Police Patrol Officers blocked the ability of the Nissan from escape and the officers found Garcia and evidence of the crime inside the vehicle. Garcia was arrested and one of the officers went inside the store at 14526 S.P.I.D. to check the employee. The 22-year-old store employee told the officer that Garcia had just robbed the store and was in the process of escape when the officers stopped behind her.

No one was injured in these events.

Garcia was arrested for two aggravated robberies, each is a first degree felony punishable by up to 99 years in prison (but not less than 5 years in prison upon conviction) and up to a $10,000 fine.

Two women run over on beach

Two women were taken to the hospital on Saturday after they were run over by a friend while sunbathing. Police say the women were laying on the sand behind the man’s truck when he did not see them and backed over them. Both suffered serious injuries. The man was arrested for suspicion of intoxication.

But the Houses Were in My Lane!

A 25-year-old man was arrested Friday night for Driving While Intoxicated after he drove recklessly and struck two houses at 7:40pm on the 900 block of Flour Bluff Drive.

The 25-year-old man drove a green 1999 Dodge Ram pickup at excessive speeds through neighborhood streets and skidded circles in a field. The pickup went through a stop sign at Matlock and Flour Bluff Drive, left the roadway, and then crashed into a fence and into a two duplex apartments.

Corpus Christi Police Officers checked the 25 year-old and discovered indications that he was intoxicated. He was taken to the hospital for a medical evaluation and to collect a blood specimen and was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated, Operating a vehicle as an unlicensed driver, and for Fail to Maintain Proof of Financial Responsibility. He went to jail.

StateLegislative Update

An Update on the Cruise Ship Study Bill and Other Bills to Watch

Over the past month or so of articles, I have been outlining bills which have been filed during the 83rd Texas Legislative Session. Members and their staff have been working on drafting and filing bills in the House and the Senate for the past several months leading up to the March 8th deadline. March 8th represented the 60th day of the Legislative Session and the final day to file bills in both the Texas House and the Texas Senate.

On April 3, 2013 the Committee on Culture, Recreation & Tourism heard House Concurrent Resolution 56, which calls on the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the house of representatives to provide for a joint interim legislative study regarding the development and potential economic impact of the cruise industry on the Texas coast between Calhoun and Cameron Counties, in a public hearing. Following public comments HCR 56 was voted out of the committee unanimously and was sent to the Local and Consent calendar. We will keep you posted as this bill and others continue to move.

As of March 8th, 5,944 bills, joint resolutions, and concurrent resolutions have been filed with the Chief Clerk of the House and the Secretary of the Senate’s respective offices. Of the 5,944 total bills, joint resolutions, and concurrent resolutions which have been filed, 4,046 of those bills were filed with the Chief Clerk of the House and 1,898 were filed with the Secretary of the Senate’s offices. Below is a selection of those House bills which have been filed to-date:

• HB 1759 is relating to a correction, clarification, or retraction of incorrect information published.

• HB 1776 addresses the definition of “drought” for the purposes of emergency orders concerning water rights issued by the executive director of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

• HB 1784 is relating to the provision of career and technology education courses in certain partnership programs to provide high school dropout recovery.

• HB 1849 is concerning criminal asset forfeiture, the disposition of proceeds and property from criminal asset forfeiture, and accountability for that disposition.

• HB 1931 relates to the compensation of

property owners whose property is damaged as a result of a suspect fleeing apprehension by a peace officer.

• HB 1966 addresses a project that may be undertaken by certain development corporations in connection with infrastructure improvements necessary for municipal area development and revitalization.

Below is a selection of the Senate bills which have been filed to-date:

• SB 857 is relating to the authority of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board regarding the initiation, consolidation, or elimination of a degree or certificate program offered by a public institution of higher education.

• SB 858 relates to the number of classroom hours required in a handgun proficiency course that is taken to obtain a concealed handgun license.

• SB 868 is related to the exclusion of certain flow-through payments related to petroleum and mineral interests in determining total revenue for purposes of the franchise tax.

• SB 892 is relating to the application of certain concealed handgun license laws to the attorney general and to assistant attorneys general, United States attorneys, assistant United States attorneys, and special assistant United States attorneys, and to the authority of those attorneys to carry certain weapons.

• SB 897 addresses the offenses of interference with public duties, required obedience to the order or direction of a police officer, and assault, certain unsuccessful prosecutions therefor, and related civil liability of a governmental unit.

• SB 924 deals with the strategic plans to address hunger, food, nutrition, and obesity in this state.

Friday, April 12. Stick to routine. The surface weather map is quiet today as the Moon munches her way through peaceful Taurus, a sign ruled by sweet Venus. The main event is a battle between two giants, Saturn and Uranus, who form a challenging inconjunct in the heavens at 10:29 pm Friday night. Saturn is the old guard. Uranus is the rebel. This marker is minor but we could still have problems with computers, cars and electrical devices, ruled by Uranus. And some folks will not handle the stress this aspect generates and do some crazy things. Best to stay under the speed limit and to play it safe and cool today and tonight. Accept delays knowing it’s probably for the best. And pay extra attention to the kids and critters Friday night as minor mishaps are more likely.

THE WEEKEND: Slow down Saturday morning. The Moon sextiles clever Mercury at 7:30 am but then turns Void of Course until she enters Gemini at 9:13 am. Green lights for work or play come on at this moment as the Skywatch clears. A touch of fog clouds up our judgment when the Moon squares dreamy Neptune at 6:26 pm, but that’s the only quack in the Skywatch on Saturday and it passes quickly. Good news: Mercury, the ruler of the winds, finally enters Aries, the sign of Spring, at 9:37 pm. And he is three weeks late. Look for warmer temperatures in the days ahead, and it’s also likely we’ll have more powerful storms with high winds in the weeks ahead. Arguments, too. Mercury in Aries fires up our desire to speak up and challenge the status quo.

Sunday’s Skywatch is lovely. The Moon flies through air sign Gemini encouraging tweets, calls, texts, short trips and getting in touch with friends and loved ones. The Moon sextiles resourceful Uranus at 4:07 am early Sunday morning. You’ll probably sleep through it, but you will enjoy the other contact Luna makes Sunday afternoon as she meets lucky and optimistic Jupiter in the heavens at 1:57 pm. The good vibes in this aspect will echo throughout the rest of the afternoon hours suggesting a very good time to explore a new destination or to take a class—Jupiter blesses all new experiences on Sunday afternoon—plan something. As times change.

Monday, April 15. A changing of the guard. Sweet Venus leaves fiery Aries early this morning and enters earthy Taurus, one of her home signs. She will help you attract money

and love over the next 25 days to the extent you do the necessary work and have a space in your heart for someone new. And green lights are up for all of this Monday morning. The Moon in Gemini suggests a good day for ordering parts, networking and getting in touch with the people who can help you. Two positive markers show up early Monday afternoon as the Moon sextiles the Sun and Mars at 2:41 pm. Get the important stuff done by this moment as the Moon turns Void of Course a minute later until she enters Cancer at 9:49 pm Monday night. New energy fills the heavens then and will send many to the cookie jar—Cancer rules your tummy.

Tuesday, April 16. Saddle up. The Moon trines/kisses psychic Neptune at 7:18 am Tuesday morning—trust your intuition and instincts as both are in water signs. Don’t ignore your gut reactions as the Moon is in home sign Cancer now connecting with Neptune in Pisces and with dependable Saturn in Scorpio at 4:14 pm Tuesday afternoon. The Sun and Mars will meet in the heavens at 7:20 pm tonight in the sign of Aries, ruled by Mars. This can be the day when you hit a home run and break old records. Other folks will be so competitive they have to speed past you, so we can expect more accidents and arguments than usual on Wednesday—fights on the playground, too. All of this is under your control as the stars impel, but do not compel. Keep a reign on your first impulses, look before you leap and this can be a banner day and night.

Welfare Drug Testing and Casino Gambling Certain applicants for state welfare benefits would have to pass a drug test to receive money under

a bill approved by the Texas Senate Wednesday. Bill author Senator Jane Nelson of Flower Mound

told her colleagues that it’s important to help people who need it, but the state cannot give people money to buy illegal drugs. “We have a responsibility that our policies discourage drug abuse, not enable it,” she said.

SB 11 would require all applicants to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program to take a drug screening panel. This would be a questionnaire or some other metric used to identify individuals who are likely to be using illegal drugs. Those who are identified by this screening, along with those who have failed a prior drug test or have a felony drug conviction, would have to take a drug test before they could receive benefits. The first time a person fails a drug test, he or she would lose benefits for six months. The second failure means the person is out of the program for a year, but he or she could reapply after six months if they complete or are enrolled in a drug treatment program. If a person fails a third drug test, they are out of the program permanently.

Children would never lose benefits under the bill, no matter how many times their parent or guardian failed a drug test. The bill would create a protective payee program, where the state can designate another responsible adult,

usually a family member, to receive benefits on behalf of the child. In order to qualify to be a protective payee, an individual must also pass a drug test. This bill now heads to the House for consideration.

Also Wednesday, the Senate Business and Commerce Committee considered a measure that would let voters decide whether to permit limited gambling in the state. SJR 64, by Dallas Senator John Carona, would permit up to 18 different casino locations in Texas if two-thirds of the voters approve. Carona said the state is already losing billions of dollars in gaming revenue to surrounding states, and legal gambling in Texas would bring thousands of jobs and much needed revenue into state coffers.

If approved, the measure would permit the construction of three destination casino resorts in three big cities. It would permit three more on the barrier islands like Padre Island, and three at racetracks. It would grant 9 licenses for slots or casinos elsewhere, and allow the three federally-recognized Texas Native American tribes to operate casinos on their reservations. The state would levy a 20 percent tax on gambling gross revenue. The measure remains before the committee.

Bill Would Require C-Average or No Tuition Wavers

The Texas Senate voted Monday to approve a measure that would require a student to maintain a C-average to receive tuition exemptions and waivers at state institutions of higher education.

Laredo Senator Judith Zaffirini told colleagues that of the 43 tuition exemptions available to students at Texas public universities, only five require any kind of academic achievement to maintain the exemption. “ Students may take as many courses as they wish without showing any satisfactory academic progress, and institutions must continue to provide them with tuition exemptions,” she said. Her bill, SB 1210, would require that a student maintain a 2.0 out of 4-point grade average to keep receiving any state tuition waiver or exemption. It also limits to thirty the number of hours a student can take beyond their degree plan and still receive an exemption. Also Monday, the

Senate voted to extend the suspension of public school accountability measures for another year. The Legislature is currently considering reforms to the state’s end-of-course exams, which are a primary factor in determining campus ratings and accountability. While the state works through these reforms, lawmakers don’t think it’s fair to punish schools for failing to meet accountability standards that they are working on changing. SB 1109, by Greenville Senator Bob Deuell, would suspend ratings and accreditiation reviews through the end of this school year. The exception to this is that schools that have improved achievement could still move up in the ratings, but no school would be lowered in ranking while the review of the state’s accountability standards are underway.

Both bills now head to the House for consideration.

And what a party it was…

This has been a big week for sad goodbyes here on the Island as we bid adieu to several of our friends. Our pal, Susan Powell, sold her part of the Back Porch and threw one world-class retirement party last Thursday. Anybody who was anybody in Port A made the scene

and Susan brought in her favorite band, Mingo Fishtrap (Austin, TX) for the soirée. We danced, we drank, we ate, we told stories, we wished we could retire… we will surely miss Susan and Gentry. They will now be spending most of their time at their ranch in Goliad and traveling, but promise to drop in on us from time to time. Thanks for the great party Susan. You’ve gotten quite good at throwing them in the past several decades.

Roy Cox memorial this Sunday…

We lost an island legend, Roy Cox, last week. He had been in poor health for quite some time. Cox was the bassist and vocalist for the 60’s psychedelic band, Bubble Puppy, who had

the top-twenty hit, Hot Smoke and Sassafras, in 1968. There will be a memorial for Roy at Shorty’s Place on Sunday, April 14th from 5-7 with an open jam hosted by some of the musicians from Austin, San Antonio and the island who played with Roy over the years. Also, there will be a silent auction held to help Roy’s father with burial expenses.

Dave Bottlehead Miller passes…And on Tuesday,

we lost another friend; Dave Bottlehead Miller succumbed to his fight with kidney failure and brain cancer. He will suffer no longer. Originally from Ft. Worth, Miller was a soulful singer who could belt out a blues number with

the fury of freight train. He got his nickname from Blind Sam Meyers, a famous north Texas blues man who witnessed Miller getting clobbered over the head with a beer bottle one night in a seedy Ft. Worth blues bar. Needless to say, Dave Miller was a passionate, talented man with many friends and fans. I’ll let you know when a tribute is scheduled.

Joe Mack & Carter Sampson…Joe Mack and

Carter Sampson ( T a h l e q u a h , OK) played the Back Porch last Friday night. You may remember Joe Mack from playing the Tarpon Ice House a few times in the past couple of years. He’s the one I’ve referred to as the “happy mad scientist”. He

plays a busy guitar and records himself in loops, building the song in real time. Well, this time he showed up as a duo act with a lady and her guitar… Carter Sampson. She was nothing short of amazing and put a whole new slant to Joe Mack’s act. He still plays a busy guitar and is still happy in a mad way, but SHE is incredible. Sampson’s voice is strong and beautiful… and grabs you. Their song selection was not full of typical covers and stayed original. I’ve always been a fan of Joe Mack but now I have an added appreciation. These two have a chemistry that’s so strong you can smell it. We’ll get them back down here. I want to see this again (and again).

DO NOT MISS LIST This weekend…

Tonight, Thursday, April 11th, guitar-slinger Michael O’Connor (Brenham, TX) will play the House of Rock. Originally from Corpus,

O’Connor is one of the more sought after sidemen on the circuit and often shows up with such greats as Slaid Cleave, Susan Gibson, Adam Carroll and Jack Saunders. Truth be known, O’Connor is a stellar front man and puts on an excellent solo show with his original material. He truly deserves his 2010 star on the South Texas Walk of Fame. On Friday April 12th, Charlie Hagar & the Capt. Legendary Band (Baton Rogue, LA) will bring their soulful brand of Americana to the Back Porch. This is foot stompin’ country music, where the bayou meets the hills. Also on the 12th, good songs, vocals, and repartee with songstress Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX) at the Tarpon Ice House happy hour (5-7). Also on the 12th catch Ray T & the City Crew (Aransas Pass, TX) at the Flat’s Lounge and Woodie Ray Lawson’s band, The Ones at the Sunset Sounds concert series put on by the Parks and Rec Department in Port A each year at Robert’s Point Park. Bring the kids and dogs, your lawn chairs and ice chest for a great, relaxed show at the Patsy Jones Amphitheater by the ferry landing in Port A. This is a really cool island event. On Saturday April 13th, the big ten piece, horn fueled party band Cruise Control (Corpus Christi, TX) will roll into the Back Porch. Bring your dancing shoes! Also on the 13th, Three Way Street is at Shorty’s, Melissa Brooke is at the South Texas Ice House in Corpus, Stevie Start is at the Coast Club and Raeanne & the Ride is at Giggity’s… all excellent local bands.

Next weekend…Next Friday, April 19th, Moon Light Social, the

up and coming Austin duo will play the Porch. The band is produced by Asleep at the Wheel frontman, Ray Benson and was named winner of the 2011 Austin Chronicle Sound Wars after beating out nearly 100 other Austin bands. On Saturday, April 20th, the internationally acclaimed all female bluesgrass phenom, Della Mae (Boston, MA) will play the Back Porch. The band features two-time National Fiddle Champion Kimber Ludiker and has shared stages with the likes of Willie Nelson, Del McCoury and Leon Russell. DON’T MISS

THIS SHOW FOR LOVE OR MONEY!!! Also on the 20th, the Port A Airport will host an open house with music by Hy Eddleman and others. One more thing on the 20th to watch for… one of our island treasures, Lela Caldwell has moved back to Port A from Austin. Lela is an incredible guitarist. Check her out on You Tube. She plays all varieties of music from rock to blues to classical to electronic. She has put together a production with laser lights and plays guitar with pre-recorded tracks which she calls Purple Monkey Laser and it’s cool. She will bring this performance to Shorty’s (her favorite old hang) on April 20 and 27 and to Giggity’s in May. This will be something entirely different and well worth checking out.

On the horizon…Briefly, on Thursday, April 25th, the fabulous

Gypsy Kings will play Concrete Street Amphitheater. More on that next time. Also, this is SandFest weekend (April 26-28) when 100,000 people will invade us to see mind boggling sand sculptures by master artists from around the world. It’s on the beach in Port A and you will soon be hearing all about it from every direction. On April 26th, the Krayolas (San Antonio, TX) will play the Porch and J.T. Coldfire (Austin, TX) will bring his gut bucket blues to Giggity’s. On the 27th, Houston Marchman will play the Porch and the great rockin’ funk band, Vallejo (Austin, TX) will play the Executive Surf Club. I’ll go into more detail on all these shows next time.
