We’ve seen it with jazz, rock, and hip-hop: musicians around the world pick up the American sound and run with it, and we’re flattered. But Italian bluegrass? Never fear: Beppe Gambetta is a master innovator of the acoustic guitar, and the music he brings to Lopez Community Center on Sept.25 at 7 p.m. will dazzle bluegrass and world music fans alike. Tickets are $10-15 for adults and $8 for youth. Tickets are at Paper Scissors on the Rock, Lopez Center, at the door and www.lopezcenter.org.

There will also be a guitar workshop with Beppe Gambetta on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Lopez Center. The cost is $25 and you can regsiter at [email protected].

How does an Italian kid find bluegrass? “A great music can touch you deeply and call you even if

it doesn’t come directly from your culture,” Beppe explains. “When you hear it, it’s like when you see for the first time the woman of your life.”

As an adolescent, Beppe heard Doc Watson’s flatpicking and felt called to the music.

Home exerted its own influence. “Genova is the town of the most famous singer-song-

writers, sort of the Austin of Italy,” so although Beppe had to learn flatpicking on his own, he was surrounded with traditional inspirations: the composer Nicolo Paganini, and Pasquale Taraffo, virtuoso harp guitarist, whose music Beppe later brought back to life with the help of David Grisman.

Beppe proudly notes that his son, Filippo Gambetta, is a rising star of the European diatonic accordion, “so [although] I don’t come from a music family, I did start one.”

In 1985 Beppe made the leap from social worker to full-time musician: “Since then every year I continue to say ‘one more year’ and I will do it forever.”

Once established, Beppe was able to meet his hero, Doc Watson, and played with him on several occasions. So deep was this influence that when Doc died last year, Beppe trav-eled to Doc’s hometown in Deep Gap, North Carolina to say goodbye.

Beppe has played with many stars of the folk scene, including Dan Crary (who performed on Lopez in 2010), Pete Seeger, David Grisman, Gene Parsons, Norman Blake and the band Men Of Steel. But among such skilled musicians, Beppe’s performances stand out for their intimate emotion, as he innovates within folk traditions. One layer of his sound derives from the Gypsy musi-cians he met in the former Czechoslovakia, experienc-ing the vibrant bluegrass scene fueling the democratic revolution. His work bridges two continents, a fusion of American roots music and Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads, steel string guitars and vintage harp guitars.

Hospice offers volun-teer training

For the first time, Hospice of San Juan’s volunteer train-ing is open to new and cur-rent volunteers with Lopez Hospice and Home Support. Most of the two-weekend program will be presented by the Whatcom Hospice team, including nurses, physicians and social workers. Topics will include communication/listening skills, empathy, con-fidentiality, self-care, being

with the dying, bereavement and grief support.

Volunteers are the back-bone of the LIHHS team, providing companionship, comfort, and a variety of services for Lopez residents who are faced with illness, injury and dying. As the community ages, there is a continuing need for new volunteers. While training is not offered every year, there is now an opportu-nity to join the team by participating in the fall training. It will be held at the Mullis Senior Center in Friday Harbor October 19-20 and 26-27. There is no requirement to commit to volunteer time in order to participate. If you are inter-

Parks volunteers celebrate successes

Parks volunteers gath-ered around a bonfire on Saturday, sharing stories, laughing, and celebrating the season’s accomplish-ments. Volunteers at Odlin Park logged over 425 hours of service this year, in addition to the work of volunteers at Day Parks such as Agate Beach. Odlin Park hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Party to cel-ebrate the work done by all San Juan County Parks volunteers on Lopez Island.

Odlin Park Assistant Manager Sara Waugh said, “Your hard work, enthusi-asm, and dedication to the county parks on Lopez have made a huge difference to the parks, to the commu-nity, to visitors, and to staff. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done, and I look forward to working with you in the future.”

Volunteer accomplish-ments this season at Odlin Park included campground improvements such as con-struction of foot bridges and a bike rack, new signage and new posts, trail build-ing, and trail maintenance. Day Parks volunteers main-tained and monitored outer sites. Volunteers enjoyed gathering around a fire at the Odlin Group Site fire

pit, celebrating their season and enjoying pizza, salad and homemade cookies.

Music line-up for Backhoe Hoedown

The featured musicians for the Backhoe Hoedown at Lopez Center on September 29 are JP and the OK Rhythm Boys.

JP and the OK Rhythm Boys play “mostly swing, generously salted with jazz standards, waltzes, polkas, 60’s rockers, and originals, all done in fun fiddling style.”

They are all members of the Olga Symphony and have played together casually for several years

before starting their touring career as a trio. This will be their second appearance on Lopez.

The Hoedown is pre-sented by Solid Waste Alternatives Program as the finale to their campaign to buy a backhoe for the Lopez Dump. The celebration, 5:30-8:30 p.m., will include a chili feed with cornbread, slaw, and apple crisp.

“We’re thrilled to be intro-ducing Lopez to this Orcas group who are generously contributing their time and talent to this event,” said SWAP board member Sarah Eppenbach. “We invite everyone to pull on their boots and share in the cel-ebration.”

There will be no admis-sion charge, but donations will be accepted at the door.

Helding for School BoardI am writing to support the re-election of John Helding to

the Lopez School Board. John helped me prepare for the SATs during my junior year and then assisted me in applying to college. He read countless

drafts of my senior essay, spent hours teaching me to take the SAT and I am so appreciative of his willingness to help me as well as many other Lopez Island students. I recently left Lopez to begin college and I believe that I am able to follow my dreams at Mount Holyoke College because of all the support I received from community members, such as John, who gave me the resources and encouragement I needed. While in high school, I often saw John eating lunch in the cafeteria connecting with students of all ages. John clearly is dedicated to improving Lopez School and supporting its students and I believe he will continue to be an excellent school board member.

It’s hard to imagine what it’s like to live and work in the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, but that’s just what small groups of Lopez High School Spanish students have done every other year since 2001. And because of the school’s long-stand-ing connection with the students’ host, the

Center for Development in Central America, the Lopez community has gotten to know about some of the realities of the struggles and victories of this small Central American country.

Later this month, Becca Mohally Renk from the CDCA will show slides to update the community about current issues and the orga-nization’s work. Her presentation, “Another World is Possible… And Already Being Built

in Nicaragua” is scheduled for Grace Church Social Hall on Monday, Sept. 23, at 7 p.m.; the event is free and open to the public.

Renk also will have Nicaraguan craft items and coffee available for purchase; all proceeds benefit the work of the CDCA.

Lopez students, staff, and chaperones have talked passionately over the years about the life-changing experiences they’ve had in Nicaragua working with the Center for Development in Central America. The CDCA is a project of the Jubilee House Community, a nonprofit organization that works in part-nership with communities and cooperatives, enabling them to find their own solutions to the problems they identify and connecting them with resources to solve their problems. Located in Ciudad Sandino, the CDCA works

in five main areas:Sustainable AgricultureSustainable Economic DevelopmentHealth CareEducationAppropriate Technology.More information about the CDA is avail-

Nicaragua is scheduled for February 2015, and students are already gearing up for it with fundraising activities and language study.

“We’re excited to see Becca here on Lopez,” Spanish teacher Lisa Geddes says. “She and the entire CDCA make a big difference in the lives of Nicaraguans as well as students here in our own community.”

“How’re you doing with fund-ing?” “When will you start construction?” These are questions about a commu-nity pool for Lopez that greet FLIP volunteers at Friends of Lopez Island Pool public events.

“Everyone wants to swim in a community pool,” com-mented Leslie Quenell, who staffed the FLIP Farmers’ Market booth for two sum-mers collecting support and distributing pool informa-tion. Grass-roots island sup-port has accompanied each development phase, from the first SPLASH friend-raiser through construction and operation feasibility stud-ies, facility design, zoning approval and donation of the pool land on Center Road. FLIP-sponsored Lopez Kids Swim days at Fidalgo Pool now introduce the island’s many young non-swimmers to water safety each year, while individually sponsored swimmers don wetsuits and bravely cross chilly MacKaye Harbor to raise funds and interest. Supporters through-out the island also showed their stuff by posing for the 2014 FLIP Calendar (avail-able at Paper Scissors, the Bookshop, and the Southend General Store).

This June FLIP commis-sioned a planning study guid-ed by professional campaign counsel, the first step of its capital campaign to raise con-struction funds and a healthy operating endowment. The study tested a number of funding and construction sce-narios among a population

of development-savvy island-ers, including the use of a junior taxing district for 50 percent of the funding, and a less expensive single out-door pool rather than a 30 by 40-foot therapy/rehab pool paired with a 75-foot four-lane lap pool available year-round. Study participants indicated concerns with the overall project cost, ongoing operating expenses, use of a new tax district for part of the funding, and the need to support already existing services on the Island. These concerns were too much to offset a nearly unanimous desire among participants to have a pool, or the respect the community has for FLIP’s work to date.

“It’s clear that Lopez Island would enjoy having and using a community pool,” campaign counsel Brent Hafele report-ed. However, his confidential interviews brought into the light issues of more pressing community priorities, along

with a slowly recovering economy, as concerns that would block the feasibility of funding a pool at this time. The Friends of Lopez Island Pool learned from recently received results that project costs were unlikely to be suf-ficiently funded as currently presented.

The FLIP Board has accepted the study’s rec-ommendations to postpone efforts to build a pool. While this decision was clear given the study results, it was also hard to accept given many years of effort and the sup-port of hundreds of island residents and visitors of every age.

Lopez School third grader Rylee knows how hard it is: when it came time to get out of the water at the last Lopez Kids Swim day at Fidalgo Pool, Rylee sobbed, “This is the most fun I’ve had all year, and now it’s over.”

Update on a pool for Lopez

The 2013 Lobo Football team has been busy building. Not houses or cars or machines, instead they’ve been busy building their football program.

Under the guidance of Head Coach Larry Berg, they began with spring practice at the end of last school year, even before last year’s senior class (which made up nearly one-third of the team) had graduated.

Spring led to summer and the team continued to build with strength training and conditioning at Island Body and Fitness, where student athletes are offered a dis-count for keeping their grades up at school.

Rising before the sun came up, even the team manager and coaching staff joined in to build stronger bodies and a more unified team. Some team members attended football camps together over the summer, building on their ever growing knowledge base and returned home ready to share what they’d learned with the rest of their team.

When the time came for fall practice to finally begin, the team was ready. Stronger physically, better condi-tioned, and with new players to add to the roster the team has the opportunity to continue to build on the successes of past Lobo football teams, while building for the future as well.

This is the second year Jeremiah Johnson will be coaching the High School Volleyball team.

He optimistically states, “I have a

great group of girls to work with. We are all working hard to reach a higher level of play this year. I definitely think we can go all the way this year.”

Seniors include Lena and Nikki Turunen, Autumn Gruenwald, Sarah Reeve, Andrea Rendon and Mattie Jordon. Juniors include Anja Suhih,

Riley Magnuson and Shelby Prewitt. Sophomores include Mackenzie Kelley and Mikayla Johnson. There will be no freshmen playing this year.

The Lobos Varsity Soccer team this year is going to be a pleasure to watch.

With four strong and seasoned seniors, five tal-ented juniors and some promising new players joining the team, the big-gest challenge for the Lobos this year will be having a small ball club with minimal subs. They will have to work harder than most teams to keep

a dominant presence on the field especially in the second half.

The focus of play this year will be on maintain-ing possession with a tight smart passing game, a tactical and command-ing defense, and meet-ing offensive opportu-nities with quick, strong attacks.

Come on out this sea-son and let the ladies and gentleman of the Lobos show you why soccer is the worlds favorite sport.

Lopez Children’s Center is celebrating its 10th Birthday on Saturday, Sept. 21 from noon to 3 p.m. with cake and lemonade. If you haven’t visited our beautiful center, drop in for a tour.

A little background on our Lopez Children’s Center: The Lopez Cooperative Preschool started in a small building on the Lopez School property on Center Road in 1965. The Preschool is a two-year program for children ages three to five. That small window for pre-school-age children didn’t provide care for children outside of this age range, so in 2001 a group of dedicated visionaries came together to form a Project Development Committee. The goal was to create a safe and car-ing early education center for Lopez Island’s children, ages two to six years, who are younger than preschool-age or need child care while parents work. Before Lopez Children’s Center became a reality, parents were left with few choices for child

care. Although family child care provides a safe, nurtur-ing environment, it may not provide opportunities for independent assessment of a child’s social/emotional/physical development that

can carry over to the public school system. And a child may not have opportunities for diverse social interac-tions in a home environ-ment that a formal setting can provide.

Since the Lopez Children’s Center opened its doors in September 2003, we have served over 350 children and their families in the Cooperative Preschool and the Play & Learn program, offering full- or part-time child care.

One of the major bene-fits of having a child attend Lopez Children’s Center are

the advantages offered by the close relationship with Lopez Elementary school and Lopez Island Family Resource Center, provid-ing wrap around services for the children and fam-

ilies. The Play & Learn child care program offers before- and after-kinder-garten care; Lopez Island School District provides bus transportation to and from LCC. LISD Special ser-vices and Lopez Children’s Center work together to screen children for speech and developmental delays, enabling them to receive services at an early age, if necessary. LISD Special Services staff work with the children in their pre-school or PAL classroom. Although Lopez Children’s Center and LIFRC are two

separately funded, non-prof-it organizations, we work closely to support island families. Sharing a building (LIFRC rents space from Lopez Children’s Center) enables us to collaborate, to provide access to resources and assistance for families and children. The Special Friends PIP program, run by Susie Teague through LIFRC, is especially benefi-cial to many of the children, who take time out of their classroom to visit and play with Susie.

According to a Seattle Times’ guest column “Early Learning is a Crime Fighter” (Seattle Times, Opinion, July 17, 2013): “Not only is [early learning] one of the best ways to lower future crime, but it is also the way to address the ‘opportunity gap’ in our state and nation. Research and compelling evidence show that children who participate in quality learning programs achieve better academic results in their K-12 studies and also have practiced good habits of goal-setting, self-disci-pline, problem-solving, and effective collaboration with others.” The article contin-ues, “According to a recent report by the business lead-ers group, America’s Edge, children with positive early-learning experiences are far more likely to graduate on time from high schools and subsequently enter the workforce with higher level skills and earn more as adults.”
