About ISO• ISO (International organization for standardization) It is the

largest developer and publishers of international standards.• ISO acts as a national standards institute for 163 countries, one

member for each country, it has a Central Secretarial in Geneva, Switzerland, that coordinates the system.

• It is a non- governmental organization that forms a bridge between the public and private sectors. On the one hand, many of its member institutes are part of the governmental structure of their countries, or are mandated by their government. On the other hand, other members have their roots uniquely in the private sector, having been set up by national partnerships of industry associations.

HISTORY

• The ISO has been developing voluntary technical standards over almost all sectors of business, industry and technology since 1947. The vast majority of ISO standards are specific to a particular product, material or process.

ISO EMS

Environmental management system (EMS) IS based on the ISO 14000 standards IT is a management tool enabling an organization of any size or type to control the impact of its activities, products or services on the environment.

IT PROVIDES A CERTAIN PARAMETERS FOR

• Setting environmental objectives and targets

• Achieving the objectives set

• Keeping a check on the objectives to notice weather they have been achieved

HOW TO CERTIFY FOR ISO 14000• Step 1 . Understand ISO 14001’s need for controls, procedures and

records. • Step 2 . Determine environmental impacts and laws relevant to your

organization.

• Step 3 . Identify existing procedures to use in ISO 14001 and new ones needed.

• Step 4 . Write a Policy, Environment Manual, Management Procedures and Records.

 • Step 5 . Measure and record your environmental performance against

objectives. • Step 6 . Audit, correct and improve your environmental system and

procedures. • Step7. Undergo independent assessment and registration to ISO 14001.

stakeholders – such as customers, the community and regulatory agencies comply with environmental regulations
