Registration

The scope of registration includes steps to move toward certification:

1. Identify the scope for both the certification and site

2. Conduct an initial review that benchmarks the company’s current systems against ISO 14001:2004 (gap analysis)

3. Fill in the gaps

4. Implement all requirements of ISO 14001:2004

5. Perform internal audits against your company’s EMS


Third-party Certification to ISO 14001:2004

• A third party audit is conducted to validate a site’s conformance to the standard

• Duration is determined by the size of the operation, complexity of the organization, and the risk level of the activities within the scope


Third-party Certification to ISO 14001:2004

After undergoing the initial audit, the audit team will do one of the following:

Recommend your system for certification

Recommend your system for certification based on acceptable corrective action plans

Be unable to recommend your system for certification at this time due to one or more major nonconformities

Continuing Assessment

• ISO 14001 certificates are valid for three years

• EMSs must undergo continuing assessment every six to twelve months

• Certain elements will be covered each visit
