National forewordThis standard has been published in accordance with a decision taken by CEN/TC 121 to adopt, withoutalteration, International Standard ISO 9606-2 as a European Standard. The responsible German body involved in its preparation was the Normenausschuss Schweitechnik(Welding Standards Committee). The aim of this standard is to ensure that the qualification testing of welders is performed under the sameconditions and using the same types of test piece, irrespective of where such tests are held. By passing thetest as specified here, a welder demonstrates that he is adequately qualified to be employed for the fusionwelding of steel in industry within the scope specified in this standard. The standard thus provides a basis for mutual recognition of welder qualification test certificates by thebodies responsible for the various fields of application. This standard does not provide information on examiners and testing bodies involved in the qualificationtesting of welders since these are indicated in the relevant legal regulations, specialized standards, codesof practice, or technical delivery conditions.Welders who apply for approval in Germany are required to take the job knowledge test detailed in Annex A.Welders who are employed in Germany and have not passed such a test will be at least required todemonstrate that they have some knowledge in occupational safety and accident prevention.DIN ISO 857 is the standard corresponding to International Standard 857-1 referred to in clause 2 of theEN ISO.

AmendmentsThis standard differs from DIN EN 287, September 1997 edition, in that it has been completely revised.
