INTRODUCTION
The European Union has become a global player in world politics. The
normative role that it has assigned itself includes the external
dissemination of Europes social model while, as a result of discussions
concerning the Lisbon Strategy and the Constitutional Treaty, the internalrole of the EU in social policies has become increasingly contested
Most recently, at the World Economic Forum this year, the German
Chancellor stressed the need for a framework to ensure globalisation is
fair to everyone.
