distribute Ukrainian clays coming from the
mines of the United Minerals Group (Vesco,
Druzhkovka Quarry, Ogneupornerud), currently
World’s biggest producer of white clays for the
ceramics industry.
UMG clays (Granitic and DN0 grade) have always
been considered to be the best raw materials for
producing large ceramic slabs, which require a
high percentage of alumina in order to obtain an
extremely high green strength ceramic bodies.

Over the last three years we have seen a surge in the start-up of plants for the production of large and very large ceram-ic tiles. Although these products still account for a very small share of the global total, worldwide there are now around 80 production lines (owned by 55 companies) capable of man-ufacturing panels and slabs in sizes ranging from 1000x3000 mm to 1600x4800 mm and beyond and in thicknesses of be-tween 3 mm and 30 mm. Around half of these ultra-modern plants have come on-stream since 2015. Italy is the unchallenged leader in this segment with some thirty lines already running or about to begin operation in fac-tories owned by 15 companies. This rapid growth, particular-ly in the last 24-36 months, is also reflected in the sharp accel-eration in investments made by the Italian ceramic industry in the last two years: 400 million euros in 2016 and around half a billion euros last year, partly aimed at the production of new extra-large tiles. Spain trails some way behind with 11 lines installed to date (Inalco has just started up its second and The Size its fourth), followed by India, which has commissioned around ten plants in the space of two years and appears to have no intention of slackening the pace. The production of large-size tiles in other countries is less widespread. A total of 4 lines are in operation in China, most-ly started up since 2017; Poland, Turkey and Indonesia have three lines each; two plants are in operation in Germany, Rus-sia, Thailand, USA and Egypt, so as in South America (one in Brazil and one in Argentina). Other lines are also in operation in the UAE, Japan¸ Iran and, by the end of 2018, in Ukraine. However, the volumes of slabs and panels that actually reach the end market are much smaller than installed capacity giv-en that these lines are often used to produce sub-sizes (e.g. 120 cm, 160 cm or 180 cm) by cutting the unfired (or fired) pan-els, a solution that also brings advantages in terms of quali-ty. For this and other reasons, these production processes are expected to see ever faster growth, and it is likely that in a not too distant future they will represent a real alternative to production layouts based on traditional pressing technology.

Meno diffusa la produzione di grandi lastre negli altri Pae-si: sono 4 le linee in funzione in Cina, avviate per lo più dal 2017; Polonia, Turchia e Indo-nesia ne contano tre ciascuna; due gli impianti attivi in Germa-nia, Russia, Tailandia, USA ed Egitto, così come in tutto il Sud America dove è in funzione una linea in Brasile e una in Ar-gentina. Impianti per la produ-zione di lastre ceramiche sono attivi anche negli Emirati Ara-bi, in Giappone, Iran e, a bre-ve, in Ucraina. Va da sé che i volumi effettivi di lastre che arrivano sul mer-cato finale sono decisamente inferiori alla capacità produt-tiva installata, trattandosi di li-nee spesso utilizzate per otte-nere sottoformati (es. 120, 160 o 180 cm) attraverso i sistemi di taglio in crudo (o in cotto); una soluzione che sta dimostrando-si non priva di vantaggi anche dal punto di vista qualitativo.Anche per questa ragione, è piuttosto facile prevedere che la tendenza a virare verso que-sti processi produttivi sia desti-nata a rafforzarsi, arrivando, in un futuro forse non troppo lon-tano, a rappresentare una ve-ra e propria alternativa ai layout impostati sulla tecnologia di pressatura tradizionale. 5
Negli ultimi tre anni abbiamo assistito ad una forte accele-razione della diffusione di im-pianti per la produzione di su-perfici ceramiche di grande e grandissimo formato. Sebbe-ne rappresentino ancora una piccolissima quota sul tota-le globale, oggi, nel mondo, si contano circa 80 linee pro-duttive (in 55 aziende) in gra-do di fabbricare lastre a par-tire da 1000x3000 mm fino a 1600x4800 mm e oltre, con spessori variabili dai 3 ai 30 mm. Circa la metà di questi modernissimi impianti è stata avviata dal 2015 in poi. Il primato produttivo in que-sto segmento spetta all’Ita-lia che vanta una trentina di li-nee in funzione (o in avviamen-to) negli stabilimenti di 15 im-prese. Una vera e propria cor-sa, soprattutto negli ultimi 24-36 mesi, che si riflette anche nell’impennata di investimenti effettuati dall’industria cerami-ca italiana negli ultimi due an-ni: 400 milioni di euro nel 2016 e circa mezzo miliardo l’an-no scorso, in parte indirizza-ti proprio alle nuove produzio-ni extra-large. Più distanziata la Spagna, che conta 11 linee installate finora (Inalco ha ap-pena avviato la seconda e The Size la quarta), seguita a ruota dall’India che, nel giro di due anni, ha già avviato una decina
