October issueI have been delighted and amazed by the fantastic reception our first

issue of on the button has been given. This month we have increased the number of pages, adding in news and information that will hopefully be of interest, with more contributions from local organisations.

Two big issues dominate our town as we go to press – the expansion of the town, with its effect on all our futures, and a second application to open a gypsy site to the south of Arlesey. We hope you will make the effort to be part of the decision-making on both of these topics as they will affect us all.

This month there are lots of things going on, from Arlesey Town playing games in the FA Cup qualifying rounds again, to events at church plus Halloween events.

Our advertisers are all local businesses and need your support to exist, so please use local shops and companies and keep them here. If you contact an advertiser from our pages please let them know so they can see how it works for them.

If you would like to advertise please contact us (see below).

Station updateThe Arlesey station extension is progressing and the platforms are well under construction. The work has been undertaken by Barhale Construction and is projected to finish in late 2012. A statement from First Capital says: the current works at Arlesey are on time for completion in December 2012. The works are for the platform extensions so that 12 car services can stop at Arlesey these will be introduced in the December timetable change.

Arlesey residents are seemingly in the dark about the new application for a gypsy site. Five houses in the town have had notices about this

application from Central Beds Council. Other residents along Hitchin Road knew nothing of this extra site, further south towards Ickleford.

The Twin Acres site already has a stop notice on building works. The application number is CB/12/02568/FULL and is for an extension to existing gypsy site to accommodate four families, each with two caravans, erection of two amenity blocks and laying of hardstanding. Although new mobile homes have now been placed on the site.

The application has been deferred for consideration – yet to be arranged and residents are being urged to comment on this application which is over and above the agreed amount of ten pitches as allocated to the 197 Hitchin Road site (one pitch consists of two caravans).

The image below is of buildings at Timberlands in Pepperstock near Luton. This is a ‘travellers site’ that has been closed down, but is now set for refurbishment and tenders are being sought. Does Arlesey need more pitches over and above the existing agreement, when this one is set to be refurbished?

Station Car ParkWork will start in the next few weeks on the new station car park. The plans are at the final stages and has had to be reduced in size, by 10%. Trees are to be cut down to make way for the new car park, but others will be planted around the site. Access to the site will be from the west side of Arlesey railway station on the access road off the A507.

Rail magazine has reported recently that the car park will hold 390 cars but the figure is now likely to be 300 because of the changes made to the application but is likely to open in spring 2013.

Once the car park has been completed this will open the way for new parking restrictions around the north of the town.

The concert – Wine, Women and Song in St. Peter’s Church on Saturday 22 September was a delight and a privilege to attend.

With soprano, Genevieve Usher, mezzo soprano Ayaka Tanimoto singing a whole range of solos and duets ranging from Humperdinck, Schubert, Mozart, Bizet, Delibes, Puccini, Gershwin, Rossini - the list was almost endless; accompanied by Chris Underhill on the piano and Rebecca McGrath on the Harp. All these and many other items were enjoyed by over 80 attendees and with a interval when light refreshments were served the evening was a great success.

All the artists gave their performances in aid of the Restoration Fund for free; Rebecca coming up from Wales, already having played at a wedding earlier in the day.

Many thanks to all those who helped make the evening a great success, especial thanks to ‘The Piano Man’ who provided a piano for the evening and those who prepared the food and drink, so far the amount raised stands at over £1100.

A Brief History of PILATES

Football Club Fixtures – October

My name is Margaret Brabrook. I have lived in Arlesey for over 30 years and, in that time, have taught a great many people all different aspects

of health and fitness including aerobics, exercise in pregnancy and for the over fifties.

Over the past few years I have concentrated more on remedial sports massage and I treat injuries using both massage and exercise techniques. This led me towards Pilates as a form of exercise therapy for all sorts of injuries, in particular back problems.

I have learnt that the body will always want to heal itself providing you give it the correct conditions to do so. My belief is that the more you move, the healthier your body will be. Our bodies are designed to move, but with our ever more sedentary life styles, we are not moving enough to keep healthy. Hereditary disease and serious illness aside, correct exercise is the key to good muscular and joint health, and with a balance of exercise and good diet, your body should reward you with good health results.

Pilates is a form of exercise to strengthen the core muscles. These muscles hold your posture and skeleton in place and help to align the spine. If the muscles are weak or unbalanced (one side stronger than the other) you may find that your joints become unable to sustain the strain of normal movement and can eventually give you pain. If you are not aligned properly you may be putting excess wear and tear on your joints in particular your spine and pelvis.

Joseph Pilates, the originator of Pilates, was born in Germany a very frail and sickly child. As he grew up he became determined to overcome his fragility by establishing a fitness regime, using a combination of yoga, gymnastics, skiing, self defence, dance and weight training. These exercises strengthened his own body and he created “Pilates”‚ a balance of flexibility and strength. During the first world-war, when he was interned in Britain, he developed his skill for teaching his form of exercise in the camp infirmary with very good effect. After the war he went on to develop Pilates in America where he taught dancers, gymnasts and athletes.

Many companies have developed the Pilates methods and adapted them to modern day life. I trained with a company called “Body Control Pilates”, founded in 1994 by Lynne Robinson and Gordon Thomson.

My training is on-going. All Body Control Instructors have to continue a program of training even after qualifying. This keeps us up to date with new ideas and increases our knowledge in pilates exercises. New developments occur all the time so it is good to keep up with the changes.

Classes are limited to 12 people maximum. This means that everyone who attends gets a good chance of some individual attention during that time. Before you start a class you would have to try a taster session or come to a “one-to-one” so that you have some basic knowledge before you start. This all sounds serious stuff I know, but we do have a laugh as well!

I run classes in Arlesey and Hitchin. If this is the type of exercise you would like to try, then please give me a ring on 01462 730277 – see ad below.

Local martial arts instructor Pete ‘Buzzsaw’ Holland from Arlesey attended the British Federation for Historical Swordplay’s annual UK Glorianna

Cup Backsword championships held in Aberaeron in West Wales on Sunday the 16th of September. The Glorianna Cup is the UK’s longest running au-thentic steel sword tournament and attracts the best swordsmen and women from across the UK. Pete had to fight through 5 qualifying rounds to get in to this years final where he faced off against the 2011 winner and defending champion David Rudd from Sheffield. Mr. Holland managed to take the Gold medal and win the cup, after what was an extremely impressive exchange of skilled swordplay from both fighters.

Accompanying Pete were two of his students, Keith Deans and Jed Pascoe both from Sandy. Both reached the finals and fought each other for the bronze medal position, which was won by Jed Pascoe.

Pete said after the tournament “It was an honour to fight such skilled swordsman from across the UK. The fighting was hard and fast and pushed

me all the way. The AOBC has produced some great swordsmen and women over the years and we have currently won the cup 4 times and have had several medal winners which goes to show the quality of the club and its students. This is the second time I have won, I won the cup in 2008 when it was held in Edinburgh which was a great accomplishment, however on a personal level for me the greatest feeling I have at this exact moment is to win the UK championship at the steel Backsword in this the Olympic year which is also the 400th anniversary of the original English Olimpick games held in 1612. That will be an achievement that will stay with me for the rest of my life”

Pete runs a local Traditional English Martial Arts (TE-MA) club called The Aisle O’var Backswording Clubbe. As an accomplished martial arts instructor Pete has taught TE-MA for over 12 years in the local Bed’s and Hert’s area. The club is not only about learning the art of real swordsmanship but also hand to hand combat. If you would like to know more about the club go to www.backswording.co.uk

War memorial

Arlesey War Memorial stands at the junction between House Lane, Church Lane and the High Street. Next month we would like to feature the memorial and some history surrounding it. If you have any stories from Arlesey regarding the memorial or the town in wartime please let us know and we will add them in.

The men of the parish who gave their all have some details listed on a private website: www.roll-of-honour.com/Bedfordshire/ArleseyRollofHonour.html

Gothic Mede Lower School: OctoberThe start of the new school year was as busy as ever. Those of you who have children with us currently or had children with us previously will know the hum of excitement that occurs at the beginning of a new school term.

Some of you may be aware that our school roll is increasing. We have had an additional classroom built on the playground which has given us a new feel to the area. Our school council is working hard to ‘zone’ off the playground with different activities so that children can enjoy playtimes even more. We also intend to use the school’s area of the field more over the coming year and would respectfully ask dog walkers to consider this as they exercise our canine friends! I know that there are many responsible dog owners who clear up after their pets but this is even more important when children play or access sports activities on the field. Thank you for your consideration.

We welcome members of the community in our school: our Year 4 children are hoping to organise a coffee morning for our senior citizens this term. Look out for further information!

Derek Archer Head Teacher

Arlesey Medical CentreArlesey Medical Centre are trying to ensure all qualifying patients get their flu jab as soon as possible and this year have organised a walk in clinic for our patients on Saturday 6 October between 09.00am to 13.00pm.

Flu is much more than “a bad cold” and can lead to serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia leading to hospitalisation or even death.

All people aged 65 or over are entitled to annual vaccination and also anyone with certain conditions such as heart, kidney or liver disease, diabetes or have suffered a stroke. Addtionally all pregnant women should be vaccinated to protect themselves and the unborn baby.

The Department of Health strongly recommends annual vaccination and the Medical Centre would encourage qualifying patients to come and see us.

It is a fact that from anywhere in Arlesey you can be walking in open coun-tryside within five minutes. There are local footpaths to take you in almost

any direction. Whether you are out for a Sunday stroll or five mile power-walk there are places to go. There are also lots of things to see. I have been amazed by what you see when you walk around the town itself, things which unless you look, are really easy to miss. I know I have.

There is also a series of eight local walks designed by Arlesey Walks, put together by local people so that you can enjoy the varied countryside around the village. All of the walks are easy with one pleasant riverside walk having easy access and wheelchair-friendly facilities.

Henlow village is charming with plenty of places to stop and rest..

About the walks 1. Glebe Meadow A very pleasant riverside walk through meadows and the Old Moat nature reserve with plenty of riverside seats and places to picnic. We now have a school garden/allotment twice the size of our origi-nal garden, a pond, a fenced off area for pigs and chickens, a delightful orchard for shade in the hot months, a fire pit for use during sleep-overs and the roof for the piggery is due to be put on within the next two weeks. In the middle of October we will have our first Brownie sleepover when our firepit will be inaugurated - our aim is for the school to serve Brownies and Guides as a centre for their specific use, though other community groups are welcome as well.

If You are interested in getting involved or using the space, please contact us at [email protected]

The Need ProjectWe are supporting the Need Project within the local commu-nity by supplying items of tinned and non-perishable food for food parcels deliveries. During the next two weeks 24 Sept to 5 October Year 5 will be contributing to this project and after that date it will become a whole school project. We are asking that dried foods and tins are brought into school to help support parts of the community that are less fortunate. – Support Team

Pianist Kate Elmitt, and husband Bob have recently joined USANA, pro-ducers of the world’s finest health products, which help those suffering

with cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes and other diseases. USANA markets its products not in shops but through teams of people, most of whom earn between £50 and £100 per week, although appreciably higher earnings are available.

When extremely successful in a similar business some years ago Bob found that the greatest joy was not in the income received but in helping others to achieve financial stability and with it confidence, greater self-esteem and better health. He’ll delight in experiencing those feelings again. At the same time they’ll both experience better health and Bob, at least, will lose weight in a controlled and tasty way.

Those taking USANA products are in very good company, including Hollywood stars, tennis champions (Serena Williams, Kim Clijsters),

top footballers (the Burnley and Wolves football teams), boxing champions (Manny Pacquiao etc), the American and Canadian Speed Skating teams and many others. The Lawn Tennis Association prohibits its female players from taking any other make of supplement. Those who have never heard of USANA might like to know that their shares are among the top tips of investment gurus working with Warren Buffet.

To introduce our new business we are holding two meetings here, at 3.00pm on Saturday 13th October and 7.30pm on Sunday 14th October. All are welcome to come and listen to leading nutritionists and marketing specialists. There will be complimentary refreshments.

If you’d like to come, please compete the slip on the left and send it to: Edgeworth House, 121 High Street, Arlesey, SG15 6SX. Tel:01462 622 222 for enquiries, or look at our website www.ArleseyKateAndBob.usana.com

where in Arlesey?

Every week on the website we have a ‘where in arlesey?’ competition. So we thought it would be good to see if we could add this into the magazine. The picture above is a feature on a building somewhere in the town. Do you know where it is? sorry there is no prize – its just a bit of fun.Answers to [email protected]

Vivace ChoirV ivace is a mixed choir which rehearses on Wednesday evenings during

term time at Edgeworth House, 121 High Street, Arlesey. By “mixed” we mean mixed voices (men and women), mixed ability (members have a wide range of musical experience) and mixed repertoire. We are essentially a classical choir but we like to vary our programmes, so alongside the well-known choral works we sing lesser-known classical repertoire, madrigals, part songs, opera choruses, songs from the shows, and Gilbert & Sullivan.

Vivace gives three main concerts a year, performing regularly in Arlesey and as part of the Hitchin Festival, as well as in the surrounding villages. The choir also receives invitations to sing in fund-raising and community events, most recently for the Friends of St Mary’s, Stotfold. In May 2012 Vivace celebrated its 10th anniversary with a very well-received rendition of the Brahms German Requiem, following up with a sell-out performance of The Mikado in July. We are now embarking on a varied range of music for the coming season, so it’s a great time to come along and find out more! There are no auditions, just a simple voice test and two trial rehearsals. Further information from www.vivacechoir.co.uk or telephone the Secretary on 01462 735642.
