To register for the event, www.paddleguru.com/races/

Stand Up for Autism – SUP Dude!By: Blanca Ortiz, Health & Wellness Ambassador

Stand Up for Autism is a stand-up paddleboard race on Lake Norman that is open to the

general public and contributes 100% of the proceeds raised to IGNITE, a community center in Davidson for young adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger ’s Syndrome. IGNITE offers activities, skills train-ing, and educational workshops that foster social, financial, educational, and employment independence for its members. But most importantly, IGNITE offers a social environment in which members can connect with others and experience a sense of community. IGNITE is operated by the Autism Society of North Carolina and was founded in 2012 by NASCAR champion crew chief Ray Evernham, whose son, Ray J, has Asperger’s Syndrome.

To g e t h e r r a c i n g i c o n R a y Evernham and My Aloha Paddle and Surf are hosting this 3rd Annual Stand Up for Autism race beginning Friday, May 13th, with a kickoff party from 6-9pm at Port City Club on Lake Norman, including food, beverages, music, and a live auction. Then Saturday, May 14th, the pre-race meeting will start at 8am with the World Paddle Association (WPA)

Region sanctioned 6-mile Elite, 2.5-mile Recreational and .5-mile Kids races to follow leaving from Port City Club in Cornelius. First Place prize is $500 Cash ($250/Men’s and $250/Women’s) and other sponsor prizes to be announced. The awards ceremony on the beach will begin at 11am and be followed by a luau featuring the Island Hula Girls along with island music, food, and fun activities for all ages.

Race registration prices vary by race with $65 for 6.5-Mile Elite, $45 for 2.5-Mile Recreational, or $15 for .5-Mile Kids under 14 years old race. Elite and recreational race tickets include a Race Day t-shirt and Luau ticket. Fundraiser tickets for the Friday night Meet & Greet are $25, including heavy hors d’oeuvres and 2 drinks, or for the Saturday Luau are $15, including food only. Hendersonville Becomes The Big Apple For Hard Cider Fans

Hendersonville, a long-time leader in the production of apples, now leads the way

in the production of hard cider. The touristy mountain town is home to two top-notch cideries, with a third set to open this summer.

Flat Rock Ciderworks, which recently debuted a tasting room on Main Street, was first to take advantage of Hendersonvi l le ’s abundance of apples. Henderson County is the largest apple-producing county in Nor th Caro l ina and seventh-largest in the nation.

Flat Rock Cider works began production in 2014 and is known for two lines of hard cider: Wicked Peel and Blackberry Gold. Both are made from local apples and available in the new tasting room. The tasting room is a great addition to Hendersonville’s vibrant Main Street. It features rustic decor with light fixtures fashioned from cider bottles and a bar crafted from apple crates.

A bold addition to the area’s cider industry is the new Bold Rock Hard Cider facility just outside of town in Mills River. Bold Rock launched in 2012 in Nellysford, Va., and its products have been so popular that it spurred the opening of a second location in Henderson County in early 2016.

Bold Rock has a large tasting room at the production facility and is planning events such as live music this summer. Nine ciders are on tap. Most are produced from Henderson County apples, with the remainder coming from apples in Virginia. The company’s slogan is: “Crushed and crafted in the Blue Ridge Mountains.”

The next hard cider y to tap into the Hendersonville scene has its roots in a winery. Alan Ward founded Sa in t Pau l Mounta in Vineyards several years ago in an area surrounded by apple groves. That led to the production of four hard ciders branded after the name of the family dog, Wallace.

The success of the winery’s line of Wallace hard ciders convinced Ward to build Appalachian Ridge Cidery, which will open this summer on a ridge not far from the winery.

Fly Fishing in Mayberry? Well, I’ll Be!

Experienced fly anglers, as well as beginners, can now head on down to the fishing hole

with Fly Fish Mayberry, a new guide ser vice on trout streams in and around Andy Griffith’s hometown of Mount Airy.

K e v i n M e r r i t t , a n e x p e r t angler with two decades of guide e x p e r i e n c e , o p e n e d F l y F i s h Mayberry this spring. Merritt offers guided trips and lessons in quality trout waters across Surry County in northwestern North Carolina.

Those waters include the Ararat River in downtown Mount Airy. Other options are the Mitchell River, Fisher River and Dan River, along with a number of blue line headwaters at higher elevations along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Merritt’s services are excellent for anglers of any skill level. He specializes in the Tenkara technique,

a simplified way of fly fishing which can be quickly learned. He also offers master instruction in traditional western fly fishing techniques for more advanced anglers.

Custom tackle and equipment are available as well, along with group lessons and clinics.

Merritt, who is a certified U.S. master license captain, believes that any day on the water is about more than just catching trout. It’s about being immersed in the environment and learning about nature.

Bayne (Family) Brewing

It’s the new American Dream- quitting your stuffy, unfulfilling corporate job and making a

career out of beer. For the majority of us it will remain a fantasy, but for Chris Bayne, of Cornelius’s Bayne Brewing Company, it has become a reality that benefits Bayne himself, as well as the beer enthusiasts of Lake Norman. Bayne may be one of the newer players in the area’s inundated craft beer scene, but they have added an entirely new element to the local phenomenon.

The taproom is auspiciously located next to a Cornelius fixture, The Irish Cue, and is receiving the same unadulterated love from the locals. It has the draw of a shady patio, comfortable corner spaces for sipping and socializing, as well as a lengthy counter for those who like to be in close proximity to the genial and clued-up bartenders. The establishment has met its intentions of being inviting and relaxing, with a trendy industrial aspect which is perfectly fitting, considering that all the brewing takes place just on the

other side of the bar room wall. The concoctions crafted by Bayne are the pinnacle of taking a visit to the brewery. The original beers, listed on the ever-updating chalk boards, have their base in tradition with a flare of the imaginative. Bayne can boast a perfectly spiced Irish Red to a surprisingly crisp Jalapeno IPA and a rich Honey Wheat.

In addition to their exceptional brews, Bayne hosts a Thursday run club and will be continuing their semi-annual Beer Olympics every April and September. Such extracurricular ideas are part of Bayne’s plan to continue to solidify h is p lace in the L ake Norman community. Bayne Brewing takes most of its pride from being family owned and family friendly, and additionally they are proud of their unique and exceptional beer.
