THE MAGIC OF COMPOSTING 2009
On February 7, Shipley's regular one time per month volunteers' work day, we had rain, really good downpour type of rain. Our work days are advertised as rain or shine events, but we weren't sure how many would be intrepid enough to show up (even though 80 Key Club students were signed up to come.) Well! They came in droves. All our wonderful managers had full complements of teams and finished all the projects. The volunteers got soaked to the skin, but still left with smiles having
enjoyed the challenge. Not only did the volunteers get a good soaking, but all of the Shipley habitats AND our Pond (which actually has some water in it again.) A big thanks go out to all of our much appreciated habitat volunteers! Shipley can't live without you and the grounds look terrific.
And a very big thanks to Chevron for donating $5,000 for program support.

On March 7, there is a lecture on Native Americans at Shipley from 9:00 am until 11:00 am.
We have a wonderful opportunity to learn more about our heritage here at Shipley from someone who has done a lot of research on the Native Americans who lived in this area of Orange County.
Louann Murray, who has studied this history, will present the program on the earliest people living in the region. This is a “not to be missed” lecture and I hope you will attend.
Everyone is invited, all ages!

CALIFORNIA NATIVE TREE
Late winter brings on the show of magenta to rosy pink blossoms lining the bare branches making a spectacular splash of color from February through April.
The Redbud is a deciduous tree and grows 8-20 ft tall with a 10 ft spread. It can be planted in full sun or part shade and needs water once a month during the dry season. It does well in planters and is a fine addition to small gardens.
Good native companion plants include: Ceanothus, Penstemon, S a l v i a , B l u e - e y e d G r a s s (Sisyrinchium bellum) and Woolly Blue Curls (Trichostema lanatum).
In 2002, the Western Redbud was designated the official tree of Huntington Beach.
So, hopefully, we will be seeing more of these showy, drought to lerant spec imens p lanted throughout the city. If you need a small tree for your garden, the Shipley Nursery has the Western Redbud for sale; available in 1 gallon sizes.
Mark you calendar for the next big California native plant sale. We will have large supply and wide variety on Saturday, April 25th beginning at 9:00 am until 2:00 PM.

Western Redbud, by Carol Williams, Nursery Coordinator
A must-see at Shipley this month is the Western Redbuds (Cercis occidentalis) that are blooming all over the nature center. You can’t miss the bright magenta to pink flowers that just pop out as you walk the trails. The Western Redbud is a tree that looks attractive in all seasons. In winter, the structure of the barren multi-trunk tree with its reddish-gray branches looks like a sculpture in the garden.

The sun is shining, the sky is blue, the birds are singing, and the kids are streaming along the paths of Shipley Nature Center excitedly talking and exploring the outdoors. While on the roof of the cart shed, working on the shade cloth over the vermiculture area, it was so wonderful to see and hear the groups of kids as they moved about the Nature Center intent on all of the activities and lessons that abound in the program “Inside the Outdoors.”
The sound is a very happy one, not that I could catch distinct words or voices, but just the joyful noise of kids deeply involved in learning about our natural world and sharing with each other the excitement of a new thing they saw or the butterfly that was fluttering near their face or the new plant just around the next corner. It fills my whole being with pleasure at the sight and sound, the color and movement of all these kids and accompanying adults absorbed in and participating in our world of nature.
With it also is the feeling of gratitude that all of us at Shipley are able to help in this through the different things we do. What a great feeling it is each Friday while working in the Nursery area to see and hear a happy, excited world around us.
The City of Huntington Beach officially kicks off its year-long Centennial Celebration. The Centennial Committee has designated April, 2009, as “Environmental Month.”
There will be BIG trucks, a recycled trash bag fashion show, and prizes for all! This promises to be a great opportunity. Plan to participate now!
The Friends of Shipley Nature Center will also be hosting a booth, along with many other Valued Community Service Organizations.
