The Bathing Mobility Advisory Service (BMAS) specialises in making bathing easier for those who are struggling to use the bath or shower they have in their own home.Owner Bobby Clyde established BMAS many years ago as a family run business, focused on helping people to retain their independence by providing expert advice and a compassionate service.Bobby explained: “Many of our client’s we have helped wanted to regain their independence and did not want to rely on home care... but they were unaware of the options for bathing or showering in safety while remaining in their own home.” BMAS understands that deciding to install a walk in shower, walk in bath or wetroom, is an important decision and that many of their customers are apprehensive about “salesmen” coming to the door.Bobby continued: “We are bathing mobility experts and we exist to give the proper advice to help you make an informed choice about the best bathing solution for you or a loved one, we also specialise in future proofing your bathroom.”BMAS have fitted hundreds of walk in baths, walk in showers and wetrooms across Edinburgh and the Lothian’s and have an unequalled reputation for listening to their customers and installing cost-effective and beautiful long lasting solutions.Bobby confessed that he was proud of the glowing testimonials and referrals from customers BMAS has helped to regain their independence. He added: “We ensure that we complete all work to schedule and that our tradesmen clean up any mess. All work is only signed off as

complete when both the client and BMAS installation manager are completely satisfied that the standards have been fully met.If you can’t make it to the showroom, a free ‘no obligation’ in-home assessment is available throughout Edinburgh and the Lothian’s.

DEADLINE FOR AUGUST ISSUE - 16TH JULY

The long, hot days of summer finally seem to have arrived and with them, for those of us with school-aged children, the clock watching takes a break till mid August. It’s a chance to take things a little easier and perhaps even to explore the local area a little more, after all, the Borders and Edinburgh are amongst the most popular destinations for tourists so why shouldn’t we play the tourist at home sometimes? The Big Issue this month may not reflect the views of everyone in town but it does look at the issue of parking, an essential part of attracting visitors to Peebles to spend money in our shops, cafes and restaurants.

In other regular items, the Peebles Portrait this month features Angie Preston, known locally as the face of Peeblesshire Youth Trust but, as the article demonstrates, this is only the latest in a very long line of involvement in the voluntary sector. Our political page comes from Christine Grahame MSP.

The Callants Club is a familiar name in town, however many of us are perhaps unaware of what the club does. This month the club rectifies that by sharing some of their work with the magazine. As ever, in the summer months, we have a report from the cricket club, the community centre also brings us up to date with what’s going on there and finally we have a progress report from the Peebles Garden. In one off events, we have details of an art exhibition at Traquair House and information on the Highland Games, returning to its traditional venue of Hay Lodge Park in September.

The July magazine is perennially the smallest Peebles Life, perhaps because the deadline falls slap bang in the middle of Beltane Week or perhaps because everyone is too busy enjoying the warmer weather or packing their cases to jet off on holiday. The deadline for the August magazine is the 16th July and, whilst it is certain there will be a preview of the Agricultural Show which is to return to Nether Horsbrugh on 16th August, we would welcome news of other forthcoming events so we can share it with the communities of Peebles and Cardrona.

Big IssueThere are several sentences that those who know me well would be surprised to hear come from my lips; “let’s get the monopoly board out”, “I must renew my gym membership” and “fantastic, there’s a football game on tv” being but a brief selection. Recently though, I have found myself thinking the unthinkable, surprising even myself, by wondering whether it might be a good idea for traffic wardens to be reintroduced to the Borders. After only a brief spell without the local version of the blue meanies, it appears that parking in the town has gone, more or less, to pot.

Thinking positively, it is fantastic that there are very clear signs of economic investment in the area, with development work going on at the long empty Cross Keys Hotel and in the more recently empty Keg Bar, where it is particularly welcome to see local tradespeople benefiting from the work involved. However the downside to this seems to be that a large number of the UK white van population has appeared in the town, parking where they can find a spot close to their job first thing in the morning and leaving in the evening when the day’s work is done. Whilst the tools of their trade clearly need to be close by, it is slightly depressing to see nothing but van after van taking up the spaces on the Northgate for the whole day, not to mention causing problems for larger vehicles such as the buses getting through. One can only hope that this particular parking difficulty will vanish overnight on completion of the projects.

As further evidence of why traffic wardens are not unnecessary, it only takes a couple of trips down the High Street at different times of day to realise how many vehicles are parked for at least the full working day and sometimes over two or three days. Whilst this may seem like no big deal, the lack of convenient parking does have the effect of putting people off stopping, particularly if they are passing through on their way to somewhere else, after all other towns have cafes and restaurants too. For those who are less physically able, the car parks may not be an option due to the distance and for those who might perhaps like to park briefly to carry out a few messages, for example picking up some fresh fish or fruit and veg, the supermarkets offer similar alternatives with the bonus of handy parking. No wonder these specialist shops have a hard time making ends meet. It’s all very well bemoaning the loss of traditional shops, but in these rush along times being able to park within easy reach is a definite bonus to independent traders and a constant turnover of parking spaces allows this to happen.

As a final back-up to the argument for parking control, let’s turn to the issue of double parking and parking on double yellow lines. Of the latter, the Old Town could not provide a more perfect example with ample space for parking at the lower end but narrowing to prohibit three cars across the road towards the top. Do the double yellows currently prevent parking there? – just ask yourself how many times

you have had to wait for traffic coming down the hill to clear as you are trying to get up it, particularly around the times school starts and finishes. As for double parking, the Eastgate is probably, though certainly not exclusively, the most significant area, where it is not uncommon to see queues of traffic as far back as the roundabout as they wait for each line of traffic to filter through the road narrowed by double parked vehicles.

Whilst this issue may appear only to be relevant to those who drive, there is equally a potential risk to pedestrians. Vehicles parked at Veitch’s Corner obscure sightlines for crossing the Northgate as do double parked (or stopped) vehicles further along the High Street. The more traffic there is backed up along the High Street, the more inviting crossing at less suitable points is, leading to a greater potential for accidents involving pedestrians.

So, to go back to the beginning, whilst few of us would admit to liking traffic wardens, the experiment of a couple of months suggest they have a role to play in keeping our roads moving, attracting passing business to our town and, generally, making it a more pleasant place to be.

The Royal Burgh of Peebles Callants Club was established almost 80 years ago in 1935 and as such is one of our town’s most enduring organisations.

According to most “Scots Words” dictionaries a “Callant” is quite simply “A Young Man of the Town”. However, many members of the Peebles Callants Club are a bit more mature than that description would suggest. Members of the Peebles Callants Club have the aim of supporting and maintaining the history and traditions of Peebles and its community in whatever way they can.

As a result the Club has a strong association with Peebles Beltane Festival and has supported the annual celebrations in many ways. Many thousands of pounds have been raised by the Callants to provide financial assistance including purchase of the two Beltane Landau Carriages.

On an annual basis the Callants are Beltane Patrons, financially

support Cornet Elect Riding Lessons and the Cornet Elect Lass’ Clothing. The Children’s Sports Ice Cream Treat is provided by the Club and also a Beltane Cake for Hay Lodge Hospital and flowers. Last year our financial commitment to supporting the Beltane totalled £970.

Members gather on Beltane Sunday to participate in the march to the Cross Kirk and the Callants Supper is held on Beltane Monday when members meet to celebrate the Beltane. It is also the custom for Peebles Cornets to join the Callants Club.

The Callants Club also has an affiliation with Hay Lodge Park, planting thousands of daffodils, repairing paths and public benches, providing disabled ramps and access. We are currently assessing how to improve the path on the south side of Tweed from Fotheringham Bridge to the viaduct and also a major project creating footpath access for all

below Hay Lodge Hospital is also being considered.

Our local schools have also benefited from Callants’ support and the annual Star O Burns Poetry Competition is now a well established quality event organised by the Callants for our local primary schools and soon a copy of the Digitised Peeblesshire News Archive will be gifted to each Primary school and Peebles High School.

Callant support is also welcomed and appreciated by other prominent organisations such as The Old Folks Treat and The Christmas Light Association.

The membership currently stands at 170 but many long standing members are “winding down” and the Callants would welcome interest from anyone wishing to become an active member.

Applicants for membership must be 18 years of age or over and be connected with the town, either by birth, or by an accumulative *residence qualification of 10 years – (*i.e. resident within 2 miles of the Mercat Cross). Membership forms and more information can be found on the website at www.peeblescallants.co.uk or contact secretary Kenny Wilson 01721 720074. Joining fee £5 and annual fee £5.

Swift Trails, a new MTB guiding business has been launched by local girl Lucy Husband to promote natural trail riding amongst women in the Tweed Valley and to show bikers what amazing and varied riding we have on our door steps away from the trail-centres. Aware that some women can feel intimidated by the stereotypical picture of mountain biking where speed and technical challenge is everything, Lucy wants to dispel this myth and get women out into the countryside

to enjoy the simple pleasures of being outside in nature, with friends, keeping fit and mentally healthy.

Over the next few months Lucy will be leading guided ride-outs in and around the Tweed Valley and is keen to establish a weekly women’s group at Glentress Forest on a Wednesday evening. Riders of all abilities are encouraged to join. For more details contact Lucy directly on 07425 146853 or by email [email protected].

Sizzling SummerAlthough the above may be wishful thinking the temperature will be hotter in the summer months which will obviously affect everyone who exercises in the heat. The sunny weather makes people want to get outside and do something which is great as it may become a long term habit! Just be aware that exercising in hot weather puts more stress on the body, for a casual stroll this will not be a problem but if you are doing something a bit more energetic you need to be aware of symptoms e.g.

• Cramps• Nausea• Feeling dizzy• Visual problems

If you feel any of the above you make sure you are hydrated and cool down but seek medical

advice if symptoms persist.

When the body gets too hot to help cool down it sends more blood to circulate to the skin leaving less blood for muscles to function which in turn can increase heart rate. If it is humid it is more difficult for sweat to evaporate which can in turn make you feel even hotter. Take this into consideration on a hot day and make sure you drink plenty of water before, during, and after exercise to keep you hydrated.

So on really hot days plan your exercise to not be between 12-2pm, if in direct sunlight, drink plenty of water, wear loose lightweight clothing, wear sun screen and rest if you need to.

I know in Scotland we may not get too many hot days but make sure you can enjoy them safely.

At last! High summer – the proving point of the whole garden year: an endless supply of fresh vegetables, soft fruits and herbs from the plot with the promise of plenty of apples, pears and plums in another few weeks, and the joy of fulsome borders, crowded with flowers and more on the way!

Look along the beds and borders now: it is easy to spot gaps, disappointing combinations, mad invaders and two-week wonders. All of these can be fixed quite easily. To maintain interest for longer with less effort, plant the spine of the border with long-flowering species, interspersed with short-term things like oriental poppies, lilies and alliums (to hide their messy leaves).

Plants that last a short time are most useful positioned to provide fresh interest some place when early-flowering perennials have finished. For example, some mid-season, butter yellow lilies emerging through a planting of blue geraniums.

The middle ranks are a good place to establish the rhythm and repetition of your planting; this is a strategy for increasing impact

and creating cohesion. To do this, remember to use fewer kinds of plants and more of them. Flower shape establishes the repetition too: spires and spikes always attract attention. Try veronica or veronicastrum, persicaria, cimicifuga, digitalis or an upright grass like calamagrostis Karl Foerster.

Some good long-season flowers are achilleas, hemerocallis, alstroemeria (this can spread and self-seed), aster, lychnis, nepeta, oenethera (another self-seeder), osteospermum, penstemon and scabious. Nepeta and osteospermum can also be used for the same reason at the front of the border combined with other good front edge plants like heuchera, potentilla, violas and stachys byzantina.

Achilleas have flat-headed flowers in a wide range of hues and delicate, ferny foliage. They increase on dry soil in sunshine but languish in the shade and damp. Hemerocallis accepts varying amounts of light and damp and also has a wide range of flower colours. They have strappy foliage which makes a

strong contrast with any other shape of leaf. Clumps should be divided every two or three years to maintain good flowering.

Split up bad combinations and re-locate them to better effect. For example, pink and yellow combinations – so much depends on tone: cerise and lime okay, gold and flannel pink, not so much. Peach is another colour that is hard to place; augment it with bronze and copper foliage and deeper shades of plum and burgundy. Avoid planting mauve-blue and turquoise-blue flowers together; they just diminish each other.

Only tolerate mad invaders if you really like the plant and you have the time and energy to stay on top of it. For example, persicaria campanulata and lysimachia are excellent plants, but they increase dramatically. Many campanulas spread by underground runners and seed so choose them carefully. Euphorbias can make massive clumps so they may need to be reduced every spring. Plants that gently self-seed can be useful but getting rid of alchemilla between paving stones is hard work!

In this historic year as Scots decide their future, Beyond Borders invites you to dig into Scotland’s past, to discuss and discover Scottish identity, in The Debatable Land. This groundbreaking artwork for the nation, by the Harvard English Professor and poet-turned-painter Peter Sacks, exhibits at Traquair House in Scotland’s border country, before and after September’s independence referendum from 26th July to 5th October.

“This is a stunning painting for a nation facing its biggest decision in 300 years,” explains the curator who commissioned it, Mark Muller Stuart: director of Beyond Borders Scotland, a NGO facilitating dialogue and conciliation between world cultures. “Sacks’ artwork invites viewers to ‘excavate’ history, and ‘be touched by humans across time.’ And it does so in the oldest inhabited house in Scotland, just as the Scottish people decide their own future identity. There could not be a more timely summer exhibition to visit.”

Walking up to The Debatable Land is like zooming from outer space down to street view on Google Earth – except this “topographical and archaeological map”, as Peter describes it, explores both Scotland’s contested ground and history. Standing from afar, Sacks’ 12ft wide, 7ft high, signature triptych looks to be an abstract, expressionist painting. But stand a little closer, his

“monumental yet intimate” divided impasto teems with detail. “Changes of scale are important,” he explains, “because anybody’s relation to Scotland, or to a territory or country, oscillates between taking the long view, and getting very up close.”

Zooming in, viewers journey along contours of text and textiles, drawn from Scotland and the Scottish Borders, crossing borders in space and time. These wandering lines of Border ballads, translated Gaelic poetry, the Acts of Union and Declaration of Arbroath – typed, then burnt, buried or obscured, on ancient fabrics like flags, clothes and embroidery – interweave creating narratives of loss and survival. “Each may undertake differing itineraries, but always arrive at shifting acts of union or fragmentation,” Sacks explains.

Peter draws viewers closer to dig beneath the surface, through intricately layered icons of Scottish culture, sedimented by history and myth, to unearth the bedrock of today’s national identity. Zooming out, Sacks hopes, reveals the bigger picture: “a history which persists, despite overlays, despite interventions. That’s the question that stirs me: getting to what is an identity, and what is it composed of.” By discovering what unites and divides Scotland and England, Scots can debate and decide who they are in The Debatable Land.

The collage’s effect is to travel beyond borders: the aim of Beyond Borders, and its International Festival of Literature & Thought at Traquair every August, which, Sacks said, inspired his idea for The Debatable Land when he spoke last year on his study of Border ballads, and his quest for his own Scottish identity. “This whole project started at Traquair and Beyond Borders,” he said: “recognizing how this place drew people from way beyond Scotland to contemplate what cultures had in common, what conflicts occurred between them, and what kinds of understandings could be forged.”

Edinburgh Printmakers present the exhibition as part of their two-year project at Traquair, supported by Creative Scotland, to spotlight history through contemporary art. Their Artistic Programme Director, Sarah Manning Shaw, added: “This new artwork unites heritage, history, politics and contemporary art, and examines Scottish national identity and the history of the Union on the eve of the upcoming referendum on Scottish independence. This exhibition aims to increase accessibility to contemporary art in the Scottish Borders and its environs, and show how it can be current, relevant, engaging, and cross-generational for a broad range of visitors to Traquair House.”

Four artists from Peebles’ twin town of Hendaye in France are headlining this year’s Peebles Arts Festival, taking place from Friday the 22nd of August until Sunday the 31st of August. This will be the Hendaye performers first visit to the Festival since 2011 and is particularly apt as this year’s Festival theme is about coming home to the Arts!

The performers are bringing traditional music, photography, and performance art to Peebles, converting Pennell’s Court, off Peebles High Street, into a French quarter.

Continuing the French theme Billy Kay will be delivering a lecture on claret and Scotland’s French connections.

This year’s Words programme brings in children’s and adults’ authors, poetry and discussion, and a new teenagers’ writing

competition in partnership with the Eastgate Theatre.

Other highlights include James Lattin’s Museum of Imaginative Knowledge, a performance of Fawlty Towers in the Tontine Hotel dining room, complete with dinner, and Shakespeare at Traquair’s youth wing performing Shakespeare’s Canon at the Eastgate.

The Art exhibition trail is bigger than ever, showcasing local artists’ work in shop windows across the town.

Walking tours of the town’s lost buildings, woollen mill, bridges, clock tower and river banks; craft, photography and fly-tying workshops; music from chamber to rock playing in the pubs, clubs and theatre, and the ever-popular Busking Saturday make this year’s Festival broad, colourful and

innovative for locals and visitors alike.

“We’re delighted to be welcoming back performers from Hendaye to this year’s Festival which we hope will build on the success of last year’s event. Our main aims are to encourage local people to get involved in arts related activities and also to attract visitors to the town” said Festival Chair, Douglas Roberts.

To find out more about this year’s Festival please log on to www.peeblesartsfestival.org

Look out for your copy of the 2014 Festival programme in next month’s Peebles Life.

The 2014 session began with the February meeting, which commenced with a short AGM. After the Secretary and the Treasurer had presented their reports, we were delighted to welcome back Wilma Barrett, who is a very special “Friend of the Pensioners”. Wilma treated us to an eclectic mix of stories and poems and it is always a delight to have her as one of our special guests.

For the March meeting we welcomed Sinead Murray, Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology and Louise Keir, Trainee Clinical Psychologist with their talk on Stress Management. Older people can get just as stressed as younger people and their talk, leaflets and relaxation CDs were of great benefit to us all. We welcomed Heather Smith, Information and Advice Manager at Age Scotland to the April meeting with her talk on with a talk on Pension Reforms. Whilst this was a very interesting talk, it was also very complex.

For the May meeting, we welcomed Stuart Laidlaw who owns the Dam Good Jam Company. Stuart gave us a history of the company and talked about the ingredients and the different varieties of chilli jam before

we tried some samples.

The last meeting of the spring / summer session in June was eagerly anticipated and the members were delighted to welcome Donald and John Swanson with their film show of old Beltane photographs. This was a great wander through some very old photographs as well as some of May Robson, one of our members who as May Armstrong was the Beltane Queen 79 years ago.

I was also delighted to be able to thank John in person for the invaluable support that he gives us in order that our meetings run as well as they do, from the setting up of the tables and chairs on a Tuesday evening to the technical support he gives to our guest speakers.

A group such as the Pensioners cannot operate without the generosity of the Guest Speakers who give up their time to come and talk to us and we are very grateful to those who have given talks to us in the past and those who may do so in the future.

Our Theatre Group has now been running for a couple of years and we are looking forward to Tweed Theatre performance of The Steamie in September

at the Eastgate Theatre. I have two spare tickets for The Steamie so any member who didn’t get the chance to book a ticket before our break for the summer, please get in touch with me as soon as possible. This is a great social event for those of us who wouldn’t usually go to the theatre on our own, but such fun when there are 30 of us attending! I would like to thank the staff of the Eastgate Theatre for their ongoing support.

I would also like to thank four special members: Fran Price and Margaret Morrison, Irene Howie and Doreen Motion, who run the kitchen at each meeting, from the setting up and serving the tea and coffee to doing the dishes. Their support is invaluable and very much appreciated.

We have opened our membership again so if you are interested in joining, please get in touch and I will send out a Membership Form. Please contact me Laura Scott (Secretary): [email protected] / daytime 01721 723430 / anytime 07813 095 761, if you would like any information or if you have an idea for a Guest Speaker.

Cornet and Peebles BeltaneWell I have had the bad luck to catch a rotten summer cold which has floored me and apart from being dragged into Parliament for a tight vote at 5pm tonight I have languished in this glorious sunshine, in a bed worthy of Tracey Emin, indeed even a Turner award. Strewn with paper hankies, cough mixture, water tumbler etc etc. The upshot is I have had to miss many of the summer events including Beltane. So you won’t see me there and I am sick to the back teeth-the cold is even making them ache-to miss out. Anyhow I hope you all have a grand day and the weather stays fair.

Peebles High and the Referendum Debate I have a lot of time for Peebles High and the staff who are energetic and wholly involved with the wellbeing of the school and its pupils. Recently there was a four cornered debate on the upcoming vote on September 18th. For the Union there was Lord Purvis of Tweed with his coalition colleague David Mundell, for Independence myself and Colin Fox. It was a civilised affair with very good questions and indeed having done a good few debates on the Referendum across the Borders while none of us give ground we do it with courtesy. I always

think –as my late mum used to say-when you make it personal you debase your argument. Speaking of mum, some people find it strange that this English born nationalist with an English mum should have spent 40 years campaigning for Independence. She was in fact campaigning for Independence long before me, alongside her Scottish husband. This September son no 2 marries his English partner where he lives, in London. I’m of course off for the nuptials and can guarantee that with Independence, I shall still be able to visit-and without a passport! By the way I blame the heat-not in the debate-but in the school hall for all my germs-it was a sauna. Anyway at the very least I hope I did not make folk switch from Yes to Don’t Know or worse still, no.

TESCO surgeriesThese are you some of you may know, monthly-the second Saturday in the month 11-12.I always have customers and apart from new cases, it gives me a chance to update. Beginning the 14 July I will be doing my summer tour in a Volkswagen Campervan-colour-blue. In the spring when I last did it the blue van lasted one day before it nearly fell to bits-wrong tyres ,wrong wheels-and we were given a white replacement. Wish I’d had a pound for every time someone asked me what happened to the blue van.

So belt and braces-the key words are “Volkswagen” and “Campervan”-colour variable.

The revenge of the X62Shortly I will be issuing letters so you can let me know what you think of First Bus and the changes to the service, or indeed any other First Bus issues. You can actually do it on-line on my Website: www.christinegrahame.com. Paper replies will be Freepost so either way it shouldn’t cost you. My intention then is to meet again with the CEO of First East and present to him a dossier from you all. At the moment he is claiming he has only had 4 complaints. Let’s give him a bundle to think about. The aim is to get your bus back into Edinburgh Bus Station before autumn breezes set in. As for revenge, travelling from Newton St Boswells to Peebles recently I got stuck behind an X62 double decker. As the flotilla grew, with me in the lead the driver kindly drew into the side to let us pass. So if you have good words for the drivers-include it. Credit where credit’s due

Angela Preston will be a familiar face to anyone involved in the charity sector in town, particularly anyone involved with Peeblesshire Youth Trust. She freely admits that she is also pretty well known amongst the business community, thanks to her regular requests for donations for fundraising events and charities which have been met with overwhelming support.

Angie grew up in Melton Mowbray, a town she describes as very similar to Peebles but with pork pies even more famous then Forsyth’s! She describes her childhood as being idyllic, growing up with her sister and parents who ran their own cleaning supply business. Given their client list of Thorntons, Rowntrees and Walkers Crisps, it appears that her childhood summers often resembled Charlie and The Chocolate Factory! Angie enjoyed school, playing hockey for the school team, unfortunately cut short at 14 when she was hit by a drunk driver and ended up spending three months off school. To this day, she blames this for her maths results!

Leaving school, Angie went to college to study business before leaving Melton Mowbray to work in Leicester where she met her husband, Jim. The couple have gone on to have three children, Hannah who currently works for Standard Life, Matthew who is studying business at Napier and Olivia, just beginning 4th year at Peebles High. Jim works in the public sector for the Scottish Public Pensions Agency and Angie moved on to BT, working in a number of roles, mainly in HR and sales though at one time she did manage a team of 30 engineers, something she describes as being akin to being a female football manager, clearly a challenging but enjoyable experience.

From the age of 16, volunteering has proved one of the dominant

features of Angie’s life. Beginning at a Mencap Youth Group, this is something that Angie describes as coming naturally to her and with each subsequent move, she has sought out new opportunities, loving meeting new people and enjoying the new challenge that each situation brings, taking qualifications in Adults with Special Needs, Spoken English and Mentoring. Within Peebles, she has volunteered with the RDA, boards guide dogs and been Chair of the PTA at Halyrude School, before becoming involved with PYT as a mentor in 2007. Fund raising is equally important and she has organised overnight workathons (!) in aid of Children in Need, run the Race for Life, helped to organise 3 Charity Golf Days for PYT and has just completed the 5x50 challenge, raising £1200 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation

In 2009, PYT became a charity and Angie took on the role of Project Coordinator, overseeing the running of the programme, applying for funding and ensuring that the statutory obligations of running a charity were met. There are two strands to the organisation, working within schools to train S6’s to become peer mentors and running a mentoring programme where adult volunteers work with individual children to improve their self-esteem and confidence. There are currently around 30 adult mentors, supported by two members of staff and further volunteers providing admin and fundraising support. It is testament to the success of the organisation that it has recently won a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and last November, Angie was invited to Downing Street in recognition of the Trust’s work. Angie prefers to note that some of the original children and their parents who were supported by the group now volunteer, proving the value they place on it. It is clearly a passion

and Angie loves the fact that PYT is a prime example of the community working together to support each other.

The family moved to Peebles in 1996, following Jim’s work move to Edinburgh and, whilst they knew they wished to live south of the capital, it was only when they visited Peebles that they fell in love with the town, describing it as not being sleepy. This is a view they continue to have, with Angie remarking that there is something different on every weekend from the Arts Festival to the Eastgate Theatre and Tweedlove, an event which has really put Peebles on the map, giving it a buzzing atmosphere, even for a non mountain biker like herself. There isn’t much she dislikes about the town, though she is sad that Veitch’s has lain empty for so long and wishes she had the spare cash to do something with the property.

Turning to whom Angie admires, she cites Kate and Gordon Innes who own the Tontine, particularly mentioning their welcoming and supportive attitude. She feels the hotel has become a real meeting place for a wide variety of locals and believes that this is because the couple take an interest in what’s going on in town and personalise it. Angie goes on to recognise Bob Harrison as an excellent and very supportive Chair for PYT, pointing out that he equally works quietly with other local charities.

As ever, we end with our Portrait’s secret. Angie believes her friends would mention that her three ambitions are to ride an elephant, shear a sheep and do a lambing. However, she believes that her secret is that she is an avid concert goer, seeing bands as diverse as The Jam and Take That. She still enjoys the rush of queueing for 7 hours to get to the front and is thrilled that her daughters share the same passion.

Writing in the second week of June, it is little short of remarkable to report that Peebles County have played and completed seven of their eight scheduled games in the East Of Scotland Cricket Association. So far only one match has been cancelled because of weather, and even this game, called off in May, could arguably have taken place.

Aside from any meteorological concerns, season 2014 is bearing unnervingly similar parallels to the previous year. Since the last edition of Peebles Life, County have played four games, winning one and losing three on the bounce. As yet they are without a home victory.

They comfortably overcame Boroughmuir in Edinburgh thanks to some excellent bowling and fielding which reduced the home team to a modest 89 before Murray and Caddick steered County to victory. There then followed

three defeats against their Bete Noire Livingston, Marchmont and Stewart & Stewart Penicuik.

The Livingston game, technically a ‘home’ match, but played at Cavalry Park Edinburgh, produced some fine attacking cricket and some very high scores. Caddick produced his first ton of the season, but County had no answer to the imperious reply by Livvy’s batsmen and a century by Jarvis which will stay in the collective consciousness for many a year.

Marchmont put County to the sword the following week, again at Cavalry Park, in a game over which a discreet veil will be drawn.

County lost again the following week to near neighbours Penicuick, although this time they went down with more than a modicum of spirit and resistance.

One runs out of superlatives to describe the batting of Peter Caddick. So far he has accumulated well over 300 runs and has an astonishing batting average in excess of three figures. He remains the League’s top batting performer by the proverbial country mile.

But County cannot rely on him alone for salvation in this league. Their bowling and fielding has been consistently good, but they must score more runs consistently if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation. Such was their plight last year. Little has changed.

As the season reaches its mid-point, they sit precariously above the relegation zone and will need to improve in all departments.
