An important update regarding Opportunity placement tests To comply with the latest advice from NSW Health to minimise the risk of COVID-19 transmissions, the annual Opportunity Class Placement Test will now take place at a student’s own school rather than in examination centres which bring students from across settings and sectors together. To allow this change to be made, the test date is now 18 November 2020. The Department acknowledges the challenges faced by students during the pandemic response. The safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance. Marking of tests and student placements will continue to be managed by the High Performing Students Team. Only students whose parents have received a confirmation email from the High Performing Students Team are eligible to sit the test on the new date of 18 November. The application portal will not be re-opened for new applications. Placement in an opportunity class will be based solely on the results of the test to ensure the fair and consistent assessment of students across all schools and regions of NSW. Principals will not be required to provide school assessment scores, but are requested to verify the information entered by parents. The NSW Teachers Federation, NSWPPA and NSWSPC and have been consulted and are supportive of delivering the test in the applicants’ home primary schools. Further details on how this process will be managed will be announced as soon as they are confirmed and we will be communicating directly with all schools who are impacted. We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for helping us deliver this important program for our high potential students in Year 4.

Issue 12 – Week 6 – Term 3 Wednesday 26 August 2020

Important update school operations during the COVID-19 Pandemic Thank you to everyone for their continued patience and support during the COVID-19 pandemic. I can appreciate everyone’s frustrations with the continued changes happening. I’d like to share with you some of the latest advice from the Department of Education: Clarification for schools - identifying and responding to unwell students.

• During the COVID-19 pandemic, anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste, and loss of smell), even mild symptoms, should not be at school.

• If, after testing negative, the person has ongoing symptoms which persist beyond 10 days, the person (staff or

students) should arrange to see their doctor. The medical assessment should consider whether the symptoms are typical for that person (for example seasonal, allergic rhinitis), and provide documentation for the school if this is the case. If there are new symptoms at any time, the person should be tested again.

• Isolated incidents of sneezing or coughing may not indicate that a student is suffering from an illness. Staff

should talk with students about how they are feeling to determine if a cough/sneeze is an isolated incident or whether the student is unwell. Where a student is unwell arrangements should be made to send them home.

• Schools should encourage staff and parents to arrange for the person who is unwell to be tested so they can

return to school as soon possible once their symptoms have resolved to minimise the absence from school. For people who are unwell with respiratory symptoms, a negative COVID-19 test result must be received and sighted by the school.

• COVID test results for HSC students will be prioritised by NSW Health to minimise any impact on HSC

preparations. When HSC students are getting tested, they need to advise the GP/clinic that they are currently doing their HSC so their test results can be prioritised.

• COVID-19 testing for students with complex health or disability may be challenging. In these situations, schools

are to ask the parent/carer to have their child assessed by their medical practitioner. Where a medical practitioner determines that a COVID-19 test is not indicated, a medical certificate must be provided to the school to confirm that the student does not have symptoms that warrant a COVID-19 test. The certificate must also indicate that the student is able to return to the school environment.

• Schools have reported concerns with obtaining COVID test results from some families. In these situations where

a parent/carer is unwilling to allow their child to undertake a COVID test or provide the school with a negative COVID-19 test result, the student is to be excluded from school for a 10-day period. Additionally, the student must have been symptom free for at least 3 days before returning to school.

School Banking We have been advised by School Banking that they will be temporarily suspending school banking and hope to resume later in Term 3. Apologies for the inconvenience. Students that are due to receive their Dollarmites reward, these will be sent home with students this week.

Uniform Shop The uniform shop is currently closed; however, orders can still be placed at the school office. Permission Notes When returning permission notes for school activities it is a legal requirement to return a SEPARATE permission note for each child. If you pay online it is still necessary to return the permission note to the office. In addition, if returning multiple notes for more than one child/activity, there is no need to put each note into a separate envelope. We are able to process multiple payments for multiple activities/children in the one transaction. Please ensure your child/s full name and class are on the permission note. Please remember for P&C activities such as fun food day/uniform shop, please do not pay online as the P&C have their own banking process and only accept cash or cheques made payable to “Lawson P&C Association”. Lost Property Lost property is located outside of the School Office. We still have a considerable amount of clothing without names clearly marked on them, lunch boxes and miscellaneous items to be reclaimed. Please remind your child to check lost property regularly for lost items.

Clothing and lunchboxes are outside the office for collection. Personal items such as glasses, wallets, watches etc are all held inside the front office. Any unclaimed uniform items will be sent to the uniform shop for resale and all containers and drink bottles will be disposed of.

Here’s what each award recipient had to say about their sport. Charlotte H- “I did Dance for sport and I got my award for the Cha-cha. I really like dancing.” Caleb L- “T-ball is really fun and challenging. My award was for persistence and enthusiasm.” Grace T- “I did Boot Camp. I like cheering on my team mates and resting after running.” Caitlin A- “I played Basketball. My award was for participation. It’s my favourite sport.” Lucas V- (absent-we’ll get his quote next week). Charlotte Hu- “I played Basketball. It was fun. Basketball is awesome.” Noah B- “I played T-ball. I like hitting the ball and not getting out. My award was for team spirit.” Cameron M- “I like dancing, moving around and listening to the music.”

*Cricket Blast continues to be an amazing opportunity for students to enhance their throwing, catching and hitting skills. *Gymnastics on the top oval at lunch on Thursdays is amazing. The energy and enthusiasm of LPS students is fantastic and everyone is developing new skills in balancing, jumping, weaving and ducking, aiming and throwing and working as a team.
