The room is hidden at the back of the school and some may walk past the door, unaware that N-9 is unique in comparison to the average classroom.
Upon opening the door, it’s like entering a time warp. Newspapers from 2003 all the way up till 2009 line the walls, front pages showing off signifi cant events that have occurred at or around MC.
On the right wall an array of trophies and award certifi cates adorn the wall.
The biggest trophy that stands tall among the rest is the County Sweepstakes trophy, which the staff earned for 2007-2008. Next to the trophies are the awards, with the most pride lying in the 2nd in the Nation certifi cate, awarded by JEA/NSPA during the Fall 2008 convention, which was held in St. Louis. At the same convention, Katelyn Cutts, Angela Kim, Erica Byerley, Dennis Sun, Mackenzie Lance,
Melissa Roadman and Matt Coffelt were among the staff members who competed and placed. At the spring convention in Phoenix, Paresh Dave, Dennis Sun, Cathy McDermott, Mackenzie Lance and Matt Coffelt placed for their work submitted. McDermott took home a superior, the highest and rarest honor, in Sports Writing.
Behind all the awards and honors lies a staff that seems more like a family.
Being on newspaper staff opens new doors that would have otherwise never have been there. Some of us have become close friends with people we would have never met before, whether it be through staff or through a simple interview for an article.
Some of us have stayed in N-9 until 10:30 at night, waiting for the fi nishing touches for a perfect issue.
Spending countless hours enclosed in the
room, with our eyes fi xed on the computer, we tend to turn delirious, laughing at nearly anything and everything and somehow building memories that will be with us as we walk down the ramp at graduation. With one common goal in mind, we combine the forces of our minds and work to accomplish what we envisioned for our articles, pages and sections.
Although we sometimes go crazy, and seem stressed and distraught, simply waiting for an article to be completed or waiting for a photo to be edited, we, at the end, could not be more proud to see the fi nal product and look forward to everyone equally excited about the new issue being released.
