Bus Safety As we continue with the winter season, it is more important than ever that the

children are being safe and orderly on the

bus and at the bus stop. Students should be standing at least 6 large steps back

from the side of the road when waiting for their bus. Slippery, icy roads and high

snow banks make driving conditions such

that cars sometimes slide and swerve. Students are not visible, and the bus itself

may require some additional time to stop. It is really important that you share with

your child that they should not proceed towards the bus to board it until it comes

to a complete stop. Please take the time

to go over this with your child/ren.

Rest and Learning Is your child like the Energizer Bunny? He

keeps going and going and going? It’s important to remember they children do

need quite a lot of rest and sleep. Children aged five to 12 need 10-11 hours

of sleep. Why is sleep so important to a

child’s learning? Sleep helps to reinforce information that has been learned during

the day. It allows for that learning to become stable and fixed in the brain.

With a lack of sleep, brain cells do not fire

optimally, muscles are not rested, there can be lapses in attention and the ability

to focus is diminished resulting in accidents or injury. Sleep is also

important to bone growth, brain

development and general health. A child who does not get enough sleep is more

likely to get sick. Some hints to help your child get needed rest are:

1. Start winding down early in the evening. The last couple of hours before

bed should be calm and quiet.

2. Develop a routine if possible. Your goal should be to create calm, safe predictable

evenings. The following is also a helpful website with some excellent parent

resources. Check them out at:

Literacy Tips Talk About Books

Talking about the books you read is just as important as reading them! Talking with your child about a story or other books helps your child understand it and connect it to his or her own experience of life. It also helps enrich your child’s vocabulary with new words and phrases. Encourage your child to read informational materials such as children’s science magazines or websites. Talk about the materials with your child and ask plenty of questions. Here are some ways to help your child learn the skills needed for comprehension, reasoning and critical thinking: -Ask your child what he or she would like to read about -Read and talk about your own favorite books from childhood. -Look at the cover and the title of a storybook with your child, and ask your child what he or she thinks might happen in the story. -Encourage your child to ask questions and to make comments on the pictures and the story before, during and after reading it. -Encourage your child to think critically about all books. Does he or she agree or disagree with the author? Why? Is the information accurate or not? -Think out loud about a book as you read, and encourage your child to do the same. For example, ask “Does this make sense? Why or why not?” -Give your child time to think about the book, and then talk about it with him or her again a few days later.
