FROM THE VAULTS T U A R T D E V L I N 1 9 8 4 P O R T R A I T

In 1982 the British Royal Mint began the process to find a new effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for their coinage. The new effigy would replace the Arnold Machin effigy in use since 1964. The Mint Advisory Committee received 38 proposals from seventeen artists including Terry Smith (Royal Canadian Mint), Kwok Ti-hong (Hong Kong), Stuart Devlin, and Raphael Maklouf.

Submitted portraits were in the form of a plaster model no larger than 7 inches (177.8mm) and had to show Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in an exact profile, facing to the right with a truncated neck. Detailed features, such as the inclusion of a tiara or other items of jewellery or dress were left to the artist’s discretion.

The designer of Australia’s decimal currency, Stuart Devlin, submitted two plasters for the committee. Devlin’s submissions featured an undisclosed crown and earrings along with initials D.G.REG.F.D. The two different obverses submitted for

consideration now reside within the Mint’s national collection with accompanying notes written on the back of the plaster “S. Devlin Obverse 1984”.

On 19 July 1983, Stuart Devlin received advice from the Royal Mint that neither of the plaster models submitted were short listed. From the group of seventeen artists the Mint Advisory Committee selected the effigy by Raphael Maklouf to replace the Arnold Machin effigy. Maklouf provided six different plasters and his effigies were considered the most promising.

A revised model of Maklouf’s effigy was recommended by the Committee, and accepted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for use on United Kingdom coinage. Although it is not mandatory for Australia to use the same portrait as the United Kingdom, it was decided that the Maklouf effigy would also be adopted on Australia's coinage from 1985.

New Years at the Mint

2019 New Year’s Eve Event – Last coin of the year

This will be your chance to secure the last coins produced for 2019. On December 31 at 4:30 pm, we will hold a draw at the Mint for the last coins of the year. We will draw the last ten customers to strike a coin and each lucky winner will receive a certificate authenticating their last coin for 2019. Ticketing closes: 4.25 pm.

2020 New Year’s Day Event – First 100!

On 1 January 2020 the Mint will provide a ticketed ballot to be the first person to strike a coin in 2020! Between 7am and 9am every person will receive one (1) ticket to go into the ballot to declare all 100 places. Similar to last year, the public will no longer be required to line up at the Mint overnight.
