CANOWINDRA SHOW REPORT Friday and Saturday dawned fine and clear for a wonderful 2010 Canowindra Show. A huge thanks goes to Mim Loomes, Patricia Sheehan and Sarah Davis for taking the many entries in the office in the two weeks prior to the Show. Debbie Rutter and her committee did a fantastic job of organising and displaying the various entries. The display in the Cobley Pavilion had to be seen to be believed as the masses of blooms perfumed the air. Science teacher Kath Balcomb took out Champion Bloom with a superb Dutch Iris and also scored well with a magnificent tulip bloom and other assorted flowers. Sue Hough won the award for the entire Western Group of Shows with her special fruit cake. By winning this section Sue has earned the right to bake a fruit cake for the Sydney Royal next April. This fruit cake was also awarded Champion Cake. Jean Goodacre took out Most Successful Exhibitor in the Home Made section overall, while Tara Jenkins conquered the Under 16s section and Becky Thornberry was Most Successful in the Under 12s. Haydon White and Steve Flannery took out the separate cake made by man awards and Peter Davis was the best male scone maker. Mary Newman again showed her talent with the knitting needles as her autumn-toned scarf took out a major award. Gemma White’s two-seater wooden garden chair was judged the best example of the High School craft work. The Photographic display was staggering as the sheer number of photos made it difficult to focus on each individual photo. The late added class of Flood Photos due to a swollen Belubula River was a brilliant display. Prime Sheep saw ‘Alfalfa’ win the yearly contest with the Ward’s and Tony Grant, while Michael Thornberry and Matt Devlin also exhibited some spectacular lambs. ‘Plenty’ partnership, Stuart Gavin, Michael Neville, Colin Hines and Michael Thornberry all did well in the Fodder section, while Michael Thornberry took out most successful in Crossbred wool.

To the editor... A big thank you to all the hard workers who made the Canowindra Show happen. It takes community minded volunteers to annually bring this important event together. The Canowindra Phoenix has supported The Canowindra Show Ladies Auxiliary with weekly information of the sections in the Cobley Pavilion, thank you. The Library provided us a venue to display our Trophies and the NRMA Office supplied us with a space to accept entries, thank you both very much. The many Sponsors have brought great pleasure to the Winners throughout the Cobley Sections and the Judges gave up their time to complete the difficult task of deciding the Winners, thank you all for your generosity and active community involvement. The Show is successful through the Community getting involved by entering exhibits, visiting the Pavilions and many activities that makes the Show what it is, thank you for your involvement. Next week The Canowindra Phoenix will list the winners in the Sections throughout the Cobley Pavilion, there are many talented people we have in our community. Congratulations to Mrs Jean Goodacre who won the Nita Bassett Perpetual Trophy this year as the most successful exhibitor. We apologize for the problems that occurred with the new Prize Cards which were difficult to read, this problem will not happen again. Thank you to every-one who contributed to the ‘Suggestion Box’ your input is appreciated and every comment and/or request will be discussed at our next meeting. Thank you. Deb Rutter, Secretary Canowindra Show Ladies Auxiliary

Once again ‘Rockdale’ merino stud reigned supreme in the Merino section taking out Champion Fleece. Stud Cattle entries were down but in a twist Junior Paraders were up, and the judge went into the ring and helped the paraders, while his daughter continued to judge the entrants. Showjumping, under the stewardship of the lycra-less Andrew Holmes, continued to train the young show jumpers of the future. Libby Tremain controlled the two hack rings and a breed ring with aplomb, although the absence of Jill Grant left an empty feeling. She will be missed. The Sport Shear competition was the final selection for NSW honours and Liz McGaw won the Open Woolhandling and now will represent NSW at the Australian Titles. First in the novice wool handling was Leanne Jones while Jake Hutchinson took out the novice shearing. Locals Sam Beath and Stuart Gavin shore in the novice section and Sam made it through to the final where he came fourth. Tom Moore was the best shearer in the intermediate shearing while Shaun Wilson took out the senior event. Billy Hutchinson came first in the open shearing followed by Steve Mudford, Murray O’Malveney and Tim Johnson President Lynne Russell would like to congratulate all the stewards who ran their sections professionally and made her job very easy. The Show could not have been put together without the extra effort from secretary Kristen Street and treasurer Graeme Rice whose help and support keeps the Show running. Kristen’s husband, Chris who organised machinery space, dealt with exhibitors and stall holders with ease, his help was invaluable. Thank you also to Alison Wythes and Bev Taylor, who assisted in the horse rings all day, a great effort and Chris Daly, Robbie Watt, Matt Devlin, Bill Wilson and Wal Tidswell who skirted and classed wool all day so the Sport Shear went off without a hitch. Also noticed in the shed was an up and coming wool handler, Joanna Balcombe, who kept the floor clean and threw out the odd fleece, a great help to her dad Phil.

LITTLE ATHLETICS CLUB This athletics season has started with the AGM held last Wednesday where Jayson Clout was voted in as new President and Peter Stacey as new Vice President. This gives both the opportunity to learn their positions together. Narelle Hughes was re-elected as the long running secretary, and a very happy Leanne Stevenson is the new Treasurer/Registrar. The two new committee men are very keen to see athletics continue and prosper in Canowindra for many years to come. This year we will return to Thursday after-noons to cater for the ballet student, so that kids can do both great activities. Meetings start at 4:30pm from Thursday 14 October and registrations will continue until Wednesday 13 October so those who want to be involved now the date has changed can do so. New registrations need to bring their proof of age and $60 for fees and $20 for club t-shirt to Leanne’s Flowers from 10-5 weekdays, at 63 Gaskill Street. Lawrence’s IGA are again sponsors of Canowindra LAC and it is wonderful to have the local IGA personally involved with the club. We look forward to seeing new and former athletes at the oval on Thursday 14 October.
